I agree the gamma is a teeny bit off, but it still looks more natural to me than Custom. But yeah, to each their own.

You press down on the volume of the tv, while hitting Info 3 times on the remote.

I still wouldn't recommend it, the Panasonic service menu is kind of a confusing mess, at least to me. Plus, you can void your warranty if you change anything.

This TV is so badass. So happy with my purchase. Any tips on breaking the TV in? I want to eventually use it to play games such as CoD, but I don't want to right now because I heard the TV is vulnerable to IR in it's early stages.

Just run full screen content that doesn't have bright station logos or neverending crawls for the first few hundred hours. Don't watch ESPN! You can also download and use the break-in slides. If you get IR early on in the sets life, it's a pain in the ass to get it off and takes awhile. Better off to just let it get a few hundred hours under its belt before really playing games or anything.

I'm having a couple of problems with it, though. First off, there are a couple of vertical light streaks on the right part of the screen. Especially noticeable when watching a grey or green screen. I'm gonna call Panasonic just about that alone and see if I can't get a replacement. I'm 100% positive it's not image retention, and I couldn't have caused it because it's been there since I've had it.

But the bigger problem I'm having is when watching anything below 1080i. 1080p and 1080i look fantastic, but when you get to 720p and below it gets a little weird. Everything looks like an oil painting. I've heard something about this before, but I've never seen it, and it makes playing PS3 games that won't accept a 1080 signal kind of a downer.

I returned a st50 for this same reason. All 720p content looked muddy/smeary/blotty. Now I'm looking at the UT50, GT50 or the VT50. I was hoping I just got a bad apple. I couldn't live with it. The 2011 models didn't have the issue. You are the only other person that I've heard speak of it besides myself. Looks like an oil painting. It's bad & if the new set I get does it, it will be going back too.
I have a question about the UT50. I am currently using a s30 with a bad green blob on the right side of the screen. What I've noticed is the s30 is way brighter than the ST50 but the blacks were better on the st50. Is this increased brightness because of the lack of filter? I want to ask if anyone knows how this UT50 stacks up to the S30 & the ST50 in the brightness dept. I thought the ST50 was a bit dim but with darker blacks but I like the brightness of the s30.
If the ut50 is a balance between then I may be really interested. Would be nice to have the brightness with the deep rich blacks.

Alright, will do! I mounted the 42UT50 today on the wall, so the stand that I had for it still has room to fit my Sammy 32" LCD if I ever find the urge to game before the bad boy is broken in!

There is a little bit of increased brightness, at least as far as I could tell. The UT50 definitely does have darker blacks than the S30, though.

And as far as the 'oil painting effect' goes, people keep saying on here that it's normal for a plasma to have that. But I honestly think they just don't know exactly what we're talking about, because I've never seen this on any other plasma before. But I'm glad somebody else sees what I'm seeing.

Can you give a link to the break in slides?

Also I have a random question. Can you save multiple setting on this TV? Like one for night watching, day watching, gaming etc? So I don't have to do tweaks every time I do something different.

Break-In Slides

WTF. We can't post links? This is stupid.

I'll PM them to you.

Use game mode for...games. You can use cinema for night time viewing and custom for daytime viewing if you like, since Custom is going to be a bit brighter.

I just recently bought 50UT50 and was wondering if I should upgrade to the 55UT50? I have a viewing distance of 10'. The 50 looks great, just wondering if I should upgrade to see even better detail.

Thanks!

If you can afford it...

I can. the only reason I went with the 50" is it was replacing a 50" 720 Samsung that fit perfectly in my wall unit entertainment center. If I go 55" it will need to be moved out a little bit more creating about 1-1/2" gaps in between the tv stand and the side shelves of the unit.

Oh well, I think I will grab the 55"!

Thanks!

Took the jump on the weekend and got the 50UT50. I was already interested in buying it when I found it on a super deal for 899 (Canadian) at London Drugs.

So far we like it a lot.

I just received the panasonic ut50 50 inch tv. I now want to use the calibration settings that are posted in this topic but my setting options menu are completely different. I dont have a custom picture option. I can also only crank up the brightness to 60. Warm2 isnt a color temp option. And so on.

Im using the hdmi1 port on the tv. Why do i have so many different options and a lack of the options that are described in this topic?

What country are you in? Menu options differ from country to country.

There we have it. I'm not sure where you would look to get good settings for that version of the UT50. Maybe someone else could be of help.

Any suggestions for an extended warranty for this tv? I got it from Sears and there's is expensive. Wondering if I could get a Mack warranty from another retailer even though I didn't buy the tv there? I assume my other option is Square Trade.

You should try avforum, it's a euro based site. You may find better help there.

I wonder if the ST50 settings will get you close...

I just received mine today from Amazon and feel the same way. The room that I have the TV does not have much natural light that enters, but we do watch TV with some lights on in the room. Also, I'm not real familiar with "breaking in" a TV. My last TV was an old Philips plasma that lasted 7 years and I loved it.

I have followed PathofNeo's settings. If I am watching say, ESPN, the graphics from the show look great but the picture itself is underwhelming.

Am I missing something? Should I just be patient and wait for it to 'break in?'

Disclaimer: I am an amateur at this stuff.

So I decided to try a blu ray that I know had some extended bright scenes to see how loud the buzzing was that I mentioned in another post... I watched part of Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 and there are two quite bright scenes towards the end of the film. Those scenes are also rather quiet. I could hear the buzzing from 9-10 feet away at center position. I got up and listened at the back of the tv and the buzzing was there towards the top I think. The TV is about a foot or so away from the wall.

How normal is this for this particular TV, I wonder? I suppose what I was watching may be on the extreme end of things but if it's potentially defective then I also would have to consider returning the tv while it's still under the return policy.

The picture looked great though.

I would stay away from ESPN for the first 100-300 hours. Their news/score crawls never leave the screen. You're just asking for some bad IR. Have you tried a BD movie? HD Cable is good, but it's entirely dependent on the channel and source.

I think what you're hearing are the cooling fans, they are behind the air vents in the top of the TV

This is probably 75-80% of the problem people have with frustrations regarding their new set on AVSForum as a whole. Just a guess.

OK, thanks. I hope it's something normal like this. I'm going to try to record it later on tonight too.

That is not normal. If you can hear buzzing at 9 feet when sitting dead center but the buzzing subsides if you move off center, than that's probably a defective panel - especially if it gets louder on brighter scenes. Test it again with the volume at zero. Regardless of what's causing this excessive buzzing (bad panel, bad power supply, bad coils on video boards, etc) you should not be able to hear it beyond say 4 feet.

The fans are usually very quiet (i can't hear them on any of my 3 Pannys) and when i get close to the TV they emit a soft whirring sound, not a buzz.

I definitely agree. Just figured he doesn't know about the fans judging by seven posts and anyone that is new to plasma could misinterpret it for buzzing after reading all the posts about buzzing. He could even have a loud/bad fan. I posted about the fan to pretty much help him troubleshoot.

Thanks for the response. That I can hear it far away is what is worrying me. I'll record it and post to youtube later if I can get the sound to manifest itself.
