I found out what the problem was on my UT50 while I was watching Netflix. Dithering, or what they call "dancing pixels". I'm really bummed about this problem, it's the only flaw I find with this set, and it REALLY bugs me. Anything I can do to fix this dithering problem? Is there a way to get rid of it? How does it even happen? Is there dithering on all the other Panny sets as well? Kinda pissed about this man.

It's part of the tech, nothing you can do about it. My kuro has it as well, but it's only noticeable if I get within a few feet of the screen. You can try moving back your seating position and see if that helps.

If you want dithering to go away turn C.A.T.S. on in the User Menu. This will add a sort of filter to the picture and cleans it up/eliminates dithering. Don't ask me why or how as I believe this feature is supposed to just change pq according to ambient light. Maybe someone else can chime in. So yes the picture gets darker but you can just increase brightness and contrast to compensate. I have calibrated my tv in custom mode and for blu rays and high quality signals it is outstanding. However, this tv performs poorly with dithering and noise in less than 720p and even in some 720p depending on source so putting C.A.T.S. to on and putting picture to out of the box Cinema Mode (sharpness to 0 and all other features set to off) has provided the best PQ for less than HD programming. Give it a try, Can't hurt.

Dithering shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're a normal viewing distance away from the screen. If it's extremely noticeable at a normal distance, maybe you should just have Panasonic come take a look at it.

That is, if you can get a hold of them.

Which reminds me. After pretty much hounding them for two days straight, they finally responded to my e-mail and are sending me my paperwork in the mail. That is the one great thing about companies. If you complain long enough, they'll eventually give in.

And I finally got a hold of them about the oil painting issue, and they said I could take it in to an authorized repair shop to get it fixed. Although the closest one is in Seattle. Yay, hour and a half drive!

Can someone who has the 50UT50 give me the following measurement?

From one of the lower mount points (the vesa holes where you bolt the thing), to the bottom edge of the tv - not the stand, just the TV.

Would really appreciate this!

Update on the 42". Knew it was too good to be true. Delivered yesterday with a cracked screen. I am bummed.

From where did you get the 42 inch as it is almost gone from the earth? I would say go for 50 inches if you r going for the replacement if space is no issue...

I just purchased a U54 from Costco. I was deciding bewtween the Samsung E530/E550 and the Panasonic U/UT. After realizing that 3d isn't important to me and planning to buy the CO-star from Vizio to get internet and connectivity. After reading for a few days on these boards and other places it seemed that it was kind of a no lose situation. Both sounded really good. Ultimately I decided on the Panasonic just becuase the Sammy doesn't include their Cinema Smooth technology on the 530. The Panasonic documentation was written pretty vaguely concerning inclusion of 24 frame support for the U50 but I figured a chance to get it is better than not getting it for sure with the Sammy.

ANYWAY.... now on to my request for help to those more knowledgeable than I on this board. I hooked up the TV last night to my PS3 and watched some of Transformers and then watched all of the new Sherlock Holmes movie. BOth looked fantastic compared to the 32" Toshiba LCD I'm used to watching. Very happy with it. HOWEVER. When I try to watch AMazon instant videos I get no sound. I tried Netflix and that worked ok. Obviously Blue Ray discs work ok. I then put in Skyrim and tried to play the game (It looked BEAUTIFUL when compared to my TOshiba). But I have the same problem with no sound.!!...? ANy ideas on how to fix this issue or what might be causing it?

I also posted this request for help on the U50 thread. I hope no one minds my posting the request here as well.

Per some notes I saw in this or the U50 thread concerning the need to break in the TV, I dropped my contast to 65 and my brightness to around 50 and plan to run it at nights in full screen mode for the next week or two. Do I need to do anything else?

Help me decide....Should I get the 55" ST50 for $1249 or the 60" UT50 for $1299?

Viewing distance will be about 10-12 feet( 8-10 if I decide to rearrange my setup). I like to keep it dark and cool most of the time, so the room will pretty much be dark, even during the day with blinds/curtains closed(part of the reason why I'm leaning towards the UT50). I watch a lot of sports and play video games about 4-5 hours every other day. I'm worried about the HUD from video games and the tracker from the sports channels(mainly ESPN) being burned into the screen. I also will use it to browse the web occasionally. Reading through the ST50 thread I've noticed that a lot of people were having issues with IR and burn-in, would that also apply to the UT50?

I sit about 7' from my 55" UT50 and I thought the other day, I should have gotten the 60" except here in Canada, it would be another $500 (ditto for moving up to the ST50) , so I'm happy with what I have. I'm pleased with my UT50 so at your distance and your lighting situation, I'd go for the 60" UT50.

Looking at the 60UT50 or the 60ST50...& the Samsung 60e6500.
It will be In my bedroom. I'll have a BD player hooked up, but mostly will be Comcast HD viewing & Saturday night college football games from the HD-DVR to watch when I get home from work. 12-13 feet viewing distance. I have a front projection system in the main HT. Currently, Samsung is tossing in a free 3D player, & glasses too. Doubt much 3D will be watched but kind of nice to not have to buy that.

In best buy (which is a horrible way to compare) the 50UT set looks dang good. Sears has the Samsung & it looked good too. I'm just starting the process & would like feedback. Thanks in advance!

*edit* seems only the Samsung 60e550 gets the free 3D player thrown in.

Quick question. I can't access 3:2 pull-down. Its on off and in black so i can't click it. I want to turn it to auto. Any help.

I currently own a 2009 46" U1 Panny plasma and I'd really like to upgrade.

The reports from CNET about fuzzy 3D is why I haven't bought a UT50 or ST50 yet, is this a real issue?

That function only is accessible if you are inputting an interlaced video signal like 480i or 1080i format from say a cable box.
The "ON" setting has been recommended by CNET instead of "AUTO" since auto may not work correctly.

How do you get rid of the Ad banner when you turn on the UT50?

Hey, I am just wondering is the 50UT or ST better for its price and what is the difference between the two. I live in New Zealand so it is TH-50ST50 and TH-50UT50. I went to the store the other day, and the salesman turned both, but the ST looks way better than UT, the picture is way brighter and more clear, Is this a salesman trick by tweaking the settings or is it actually like that. Also I do not need built-in wi-fi as I will use an Ethernet cable.
Here it is:
UT50: $1450 NZD
ST50: $1999 NZD

The key features that the ST50 (relative to the UT50) adds:
Pro settings in Custom video mode - allows for setting 2 point white balance, gamma, and more (very valuable IMHO)
anti-glare louver screen filter for much better contrast in a brighter environment
3 HDMI (vs 2 HDMI ports on UT50)
Web browser app in the Viera Connect internet apps
Built-in wifi

So, will there be alot of difference or not really in the ST50, in picture quality.
and here, the UT50 has a web browser.
So is it worth to buy the UT50 for its price over the ST50

So I'll be picking up the 50" UT50 in about 4 months(here's hoping material below 1080p(Such as Wii U & Wii games, plus DVD's do not boast the oil painting effect. eek!)
for now, i finally got a 42" X5 and I've got to say I'm mighty impressed with this set. First off the Black levels are very good. No, they don't exactly blend into the bezel but they're definitly close at times. The color gamut is absolutely fantastic and you'll beable to achieve colors that will
basically leap right off the screen, which comes in handy for many of those cartoony colorful vibrant videogames. For gaming, 'game' mode produces the best and brightest(Vivid slightly out does it but it produces a rough picture and the input lag takes a hit)picture when gaming, and cinema produces the best for film. Possibly thee' brightest plasma i've ever seen for gaming when in game mode, i was quite suprised really. Also...The problem with Cinema mode for film however is that while it does produce the most natural picture for film, there's just something odd about the gamma. almost like it has this slight milky look it and lacks 'punch' The end result is a slightly flatter look then what i'm used to.

And while the motion handeling beats out 'any' LCD and LED on the market, it's still not 'quite' as good as my prevous LG PT350 plasma. Blur is still evident when manouvering
the camera around the screen in first or 3rd person games, and at times there are little bits of green phosper flashing depending. The LG has superior gamma(you have 3 choices for it), more punch and better motion handeling. But the black levels on that set were pretty mediocre, and
for gaming the color and brightness were nothwhere near as good as this panny, 4:3 content resitricts you to light grey bars on the side of the screen where as the X5 gives you a choice between grey, dark grey, or black.
not to mention the input lag on the LG just horrible, the X5 however when set in 'game' mode with the color spectrum set to 'HD'(SD is sluggish) is pretty good, not quite as good as my oher LG LCD which delivers an impressive 16ms. I'd imagine the X5 is in the 20's.It's

Also game & Vivid mode look awful for movies. I could even say the same about custom. Non HD content especially Skin looks artifical, almost like an oil paining.
While Standard mode is far too dim. Setting it to cinema is a 'must' There's also more noise to the picture than my LG as well, that or there's some sort of intigrated edge enhancement
already set into the picture to compensate for the 1024z768 resolution.



Overall, i'm glad i picked up the X5, it's a great set for gaming on game mode, especially for wii or anything 480p. 720p content on the PS3 is fantastic
as well, it's just you're missing out on that extra resolution which 'does' make a difference. I can totaly tell the difference between playing a 720p
PS3 game on a 1024x768 set in comparison to a 1080p set which can properly display 1280x720p.
