I will agree with this.

Shades of gradation are the same between the U50 & UT50, both @ 6,144 equivalent, only the ST50 bumps that up to 12,288 equivalent. So not sure how much better the pq would be between the U50 & UT50.....but, I'll take you for your word Randy........

I wonder if anyone could take the time to explain, in English, the difference between the 600 & the new 2500 std for the UT & flagship models.

It's like last year with Samsung describing their Clear Motion Rate (CMR), which measures for how well an LCD or LED TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology.

leftyguitar1963- I'm anxious to the answer to your questions as well but don't get too caught up in numbers. The one that matters most is MLL, and to a degree the raised brightness for 2012 which combined ultimately determines PQ.

MLL that's the 1! what is this years ST50? .005 or something? so would the UT be .007 or something, if that? and the U50 do .009? I like my black bars to fade into the bezel when I'm watching blu-rays, 2.35:1 content, and all u c is black! Only a KURO or the new elite Sharps can do that, vts a close 2nd?

Last year's sammy led D8000, had 'Cinema Black' that turned of the pixels in the black bars to achieve a true black, but my D7000 doesn't have that feature.....

Was wondering if someone could please post a photo of their 42" UT50? I've only seen it in stock photos and was hoping to see a "real world" photo of it.
Wow, Thank you PathofNeo for such a nice write up and for sharing your settings. We just ordered the UT50 42" tv last week and they are supposed to deliver it to our house tomorrow, so your settings will definetly come in handy. We have had the Kuro 500M for a couple of years now w/ D-Nice settings and it has just been an amazing tv. We have been pretty spoiled by the Kuro with what a great picture it produces, but it sounds like the UT50 is gonna be a very nice tv too.
LittleCindy- I know what you mean about being spoiled by the Kuro. I dialed in the settings to match D-Nice's as best I could. Keep in mind though the settings are not optimal for bright room / daytime viewing. If you've used D-Nice's settings with a Kuro I'm sure you know what to expect. As long as you realize it's not a Kuro then I believe it'll meet your expectations compared to what's on the market.

Enjoy your new set!

The UT50 is a very nice TV that should not be considered subpar when compared to the ST50, within certain considerations. It does lack the louvre filter and pro settings, but you can still tweak the picture within the menu presets and achieve a very nice picture. And it does have the new, brighter G15 panel, along with 3D and internet. And images are sharp and colors really pop, so the lack of a filter is not necessarily a bad thing if glare can be controlled. And it is no where near the mirror that LG panels are. Black levels are very good, as typical of Panasonic. And the OTA tuner is very good. So definitely a sleeper TV that should not be overlooked by the budget conscious, especially when available at $799. It holds its own very well against the top tier models.

When you are talking about 799$.. What size are you talking about?

That's the price of the 42" UT50 (the 50 incher is going for about a thousand bucks). But it doesn't matter much now since the 42 incher is discontinued and the supply has almost dried up. Amazon just ran out of their remaining inventory, but Paul's TV might have some left.

Fry's had the 50UT50 on sale for $799 about 2 weeks ago instore. That was worth a 2 hour drive to Atlanta for me, and I have been very pleased so far. But the typical price, as pointed out, has normally been $999, which is not bad when they throw in the Bluray player as they did at several stores a few weeks ago.

I wanted to ask if anyone knew if the ut50 would give me a better picture than my old 42g10. I want to upgrade but I need to keep it at 42( I live in a studio apartment). I could try and get a gt50 in 42 from the UK, my sister is moving back from there and it could work, however, I do not know if that tv will work here in the US any help would be great.

exactly, the 55" retails for 1499$ and the 50" for 1199$. That's amazon.ca, best buy, future shop etc. What's with this wide difference in price?

My 42" g10 had nowhere near the picture quality of my Ut50,my g10 blacks had gotten so bad and the display was so dim it was like I was viewing through a grey filter lol. It sounds worse than it was,but anyone that had the black level rise knows what I mean. I loved my g10 and honestly the g10 picture prolly looked almost as good when the set was new but there would be no comparison now and 3d is pretty awesome aswell. It just depends on what your g10 looks like now and if you want 3d. I'd suggest going to a store and seeing one in action and see what you think. I'm not sure if a UK TV will work here or not,i'm sure someone will answer that.

I think my g10 is normal but i'm not even sure.It seems blurry or hazy on thx mode. I just wanted a upgrade. My brother in law just got a gt50 and it is awesome but 50 inch would not work so well for me. I also feel like no led is going to be better than plasma and I could do a 47inch maybe

A UK model will not work in the US, and even if it did Panasonic USA wouldn't warranty it. Stick with a USA model.

Those prices are only one hundred dollars more than they are in the US. That's a much smaller difference than Canadians were complaining about in past years when Ca. models were several hundred more.

Thanks for that heads up because it would have been really bad if I got that thing over here and it did not work.

The typical standard price for the 50UT50 has been $999. That $799 was a temporary Fry's sale that I posted in the Deals thread previously. Perhaps it will return at that price again, but let's keep those discussions in that forum. But, like I said, the UT is a very nice TV if you can't quite afford an ST or GT, but still want Panasonic quality.

I thought i'd let you guys know there have been a few firmware updates for the Ut50 in the last few Weeks, got one when i first plugged it in and another 1.170 a few days ago. I couldn't find any info available about them at Panasonic. I guess it would be possible to add the pro menu in a fw update? It would be pretty cool if they did. I would check but I don't remember the procedure.

I think that is a pretty remote chance that they would do that.

I'd say there's zero chance they would do that. Firmware updates via Viera Cast are always just update the apps, not the user menus or picture performance.

Cnet's review is live for the ut50.http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-t...=latestReviews

Looks like all the early positive owner reviews were right on the money!
That shot in the dark of this tv, was impressive. I don't cnet reviews usually, but this Australian guy is pretty good.

Very positive review, but the lack of performance summary, including mll is disconcerting. The calibration software summary report doesn't include mll, just gamma and color tracking, also doesn't mention what setting was used as far as I saw on a quick skim, although I am assuming Cinema.

Yeah, Cinema was used for his settings. I believe on the first or second page of the review there is a link for cnet settings for the ut50.

A great review, it seems Panasonic has hit a home run with pretty much their entire plasma line this year.

Here is a question for everyone who owns the UT50: is it normal to have motion jitter in vertical lines? For example, panning side to side causes things like light posts to be distracting - not blurry, but jittery. The same with people quickly moving side to side. I'm trying to figure out if some level of this is normal or if there is a setting to improve it. I played Witt the obvious settings and nothing seems to improve this. Is it source or content-dependent? I thought the fast refresh rate would eliminate this.

I moved up from a 40" to the 50UT50 and wonder if part of my observations are related to not being used to the larger size.

By the way, I sit about 8' from the set and most content is HD through TiVo or DVD/HD through AppleTV. In both cases, the HDMI runs through a receiver (Sony dts 810).

The TV is spectacular aside from this and I can live with it as is, but wonder if it is the norm for this or all larger TVs. Or, alternatively, if a calibration could improve it.

I appreciate any thoughts you have.

weid5- You shouldn't be seeing motion blur with the UT50. What your seeing is probably judder which is source related. This is par for course with plasmas..it's true to source. If it bothers you there is a setting called 'Motion Smoother' which can be turned on to either weak or medium. Perhaps your sensitive and need a little interpolation to rid of the judder. It helps in some cases and others not so play around with it.

Nobody should be seeing anything other than judder present in the orginal source (ie blu-ray). Usually televised 30/60fps content is judder free so it's bound to be on your end with settings/cables/equipment.
