Furthermore, based on posts on this thread by members like PathofNeo, the UT50 does just as well if not better, at least with color and brightness, that the higher series because it doesn't have the louvre filter. And the louvre filter is the reason why Plasma TV Buying Guide gave the ST and GT better remarks for blacks (I didn't read the review on the VT50).
If comparisons are made with moderate light present then the nod goes to the filtered models (assuming your front and center). The louvre filter shields light well and I'll admit it holds contrast in daylight. But it's another story in the dark. I haven't posted here in awhile, but since then I've bought a 55VT50 and can tell you in a dark room the blacks are at least identical. If your not at a perfect eye level with an ST-VT then the UT still remains king of blacks IMO due to color shifts caused by the louvre filter. <---- well that's not really opinion as I can dispute with evidence all day long
. I swapped out the 55UT50 for the VT50 since I wanted the same size, but a higher end set to fiddle with the adjustments. But I would *still* tell anyone shopping now to go for the UT50 if maximum bang-for-the-buck along with with PQ is what their after. The colors are so good on my 42UT50 that I'm not missing my 34XBR960 and the Kuro isn't absolutely necessary anymore. I'll probably never sell the Kuro but I sure as hell wouldn't replace it exclusively with a ST-VT model... but that's just me. I realize it's contradicting but I'm a fiddler and a sucker for the latest and greatest so my VT50 purchase is somewhat justified. It's more so me being OCD about electronics then anything else.
Also I noticed a band on the far right side of my 55VT50 while running the slides. It was the worse on dark grey and white backgrounds. The band was about 2-3" and ran all the way down the screen. I'd return it if I didn't notice it with motion so it's not bad with actual content. This phenomena is present with every Panny model I'm afraid so it's a gamble even with the UT series. Both the 42 and 55UT50 I received have zero banding or problems so cross your fingers and hope you get a good one because if you do then I'm confident that the UT50 will satisfy the most demanding videophile out there.
I'm sorry I haven't posted in awhile but I've had a full schedule the past months. I plan to re-calibrate the 42UT50 in a few days to check for shifts. If something's different then I'll update the settings thread (with before and after). The settings were nearly identical between the 42" and 55" so no worries there.
I hope all is well with everyone and I'm certainly glad to see so many new owners here.
