got a lot done on the bar today

used 1x6's 1x4's and 1x8's and one 1x10...
the fronts of the bar will be a grey glass tile that i picked up a few months ago, the rest of the ar front will be painted with cabinet paint the same color grey that i have used through out the theater...

painted the bar and started the tile

the paint i used was BM Advantage it used for redoing cabinets ... very nice paint self levels and has a nice hard finish.

Looking great, snickers. I haven't used Advance myself, but it is supposed to be the replacement for Satin Impervo at some point... those are some big shoes to fill. Curious as to how it holds up.

I must say the waterbased finishes have come a long way.. that's all I've used in my theater. I had to use a power sander to get some runs out of the waterbased poly I used.. the stuff is really tough!

not sure how Impervo is never used it but what i can say about is Advance is seems to have a very hard finish (time will tell), with advance it required a primer coat which i am pretty sure was oil based because it was a pain the neck to clean of my hands then between each of Advance the recommended time to let set was 16 hours, it does dry to the touch i think with in a hour so not sure why the guy at BM said i had to Waite 16 hours between coats but i did just to be safe. I did not get any runs at all but i also used a 4 inch foam roller. so far i am happy with the results.

some shots of the speakers in the columns and the rear speakers.

for the rear i went with the Klipsch RS-41 II Reference Series #1 reason was they fit really well in the limited space i wish the joist and hvac was laid out better in the house because it would have been nice to use nice Triad in ceiling speakers but i am happy with these the blend in really well and almost don't even notice there there when you put the grills on them.

The sides speakers used Polk Audio OWM5
these i went with again for space issues the columns are not very deep and these just fit perfectly.

Snickers1,

Been following your thread for a while now...what a great theater you have put together. Congratulations. Very well documented too. I just wanted to confirm that you were referring to the BM Advance not the Advantage correct?

I am just starting on a custom A/V rack using 3/4" shelves and I am looking for a good BM paint to use. Was thinking BM Aura but this Advance looks like a better option. Did you use the Advance primer as well?

yep BM Advance sorry for any confusion, if you go with the advance i would recommend letting is dry for full 24 to 48 hours before putting any equipment on the shelves

10-4. I will not be putting components on it for a couple of months so no worries there. It will have PLENTY of time to dry wink.gif

Was the odor of both the primer and the paint manageable indoors? I was planning to lay down some poly sheeting on my basement floor and to paint the pieces of my cabinets before installing them. 1 coat primer and two coats paint. Color of my cabinet will of course match all trim throughout the basement. Thanks in advance...

the primer was oil based so yes it has a odor it was manageable in the basement, i would crack a door or window if you can.... the advance really does not have much of odor .... i learned the oil based primer is PITA to wash off your hands so you may want to put on some latex gloves unless your that good and don't get anything on your hands when painting smile.gif

Cool!! cool.gif

Are you planning to somehow have it play before a movie? If so, how? When I was using a HTPC, I could have my custom intro play right before a movie, but ever since I moved to a streamer (popcorn hour), I lost this ability now....

That's SO cool. I'd love to have one of those with our last name as a precursor to the previews when we have company.

to seal where the fronts meet the sides i was did one using car bondo just see how it would come out
it does seal the cracks up well but it a little harder to work with then just plane old wood filler ... it takes longer to cure ext... but it does work well

i also got them all wired up ...

Nice work! What are the outside dimensions of your columns?

Thanks, they are 15" wide and 6" deep, if you have the room i would do them a little over 8" deep if you plan on putting speakers in them ... i was very limited on the size speaker i could fit in mine.
