Starter speakers, or some sort of solution?

Howdy folks,

Background:
So my Phillips 5.1 HTiaB finally bit the dust... and while I could get it repaired, frankly it's time to upgrade. I have my eye on the Yamah RX-V671 for it's features and current price point (I like the networking abilities of it, 7.1, dual zones).

Problem:
After some reading, I'm finding out that the speakers from my old system are 3 ohm, and apparently that's real bad for my new receiver?

Question:
What I need is a very, very cheap tip for some starting speakers that I can use for the next year or two until I can afford to upgrade that next. Either that, or some way to use my old speakers? Ideally, I'd like 5.1... but I'd accept 2.1 if that's all I can afford. What would you suggest?

Thank you!

a budget number would be helpful

I have no idea what your budget is, but in general I advise buying some quality speakers for the front and then building out as time goes on and the money is there.

The Monitor Audio Bronze BX-2 speakers are around $450/pair, and that would be a good place to start.

The PSW505 is a pretty good subwoofer for $250 or so. That is about the cheapest real subwoofer on the market.

If those speakers are too high-priced for you, then the Polk Monitor 40 ($150) and Monitor 60 ($270) are good value for the money. The Monitor 40 speakers aren't the world's best speakers, but they are pretty decent and hard to beat if you are on a tight budget.

Really inexpensive speakers, though I believe they are still capable of acceptable sound reproduction:

Sony SS-B1000
- 2-ways with a 5.25" woofer. There's also a matching center channel.

I've heard these several times myself with my own music and liked them, but particularly with music because of their "pleasant" a.k.a. warm sound (many speakers are now tuned more for a movie's SFX and actor's voices, but with music end up sounding overly bright or outright harsh to me).

Btw if you feel adventurous and don't care if the local interior decorator would poo-poo such "large" speakers , go for the Sony B3000s which are only around twenty five bucks more per pair. These are 3-ways with an 8" woofer and IMO will sound more realistic than the 1000s simply because of their larger size and blend more smoothly with a subwoofer at the standard 80Hz crossover point (full disclosure: this is the size of speaker I use in my own system).

These speakers and especially the Andrew Jones-designed Pioneers are great "gateway" speakers for those wishing to get into better audio systems later on.

Thank you both for your ideas, I'll start taking a look at those suggestions!

Also, to respond to the budget, I really don't have one. I wasn't planning on replacing the speakers to begin with, so anything I spend now is more than I had in mind. Thus why I gave "very, very cheap" as the only price descriptor and noted that they might only be used for a year or two. I really shouldn't spend the money... but I don't want to buy a receiver and not be able to use it... and I don't want to get a piece of junk receiver, since that's the unit I need upgraded most right now!

Thanks for your help!

really....really, really, cheap speakers that actually work:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-696
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=300-652
http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...seq=1&format=2

Any of these would be better than the HTiB speakers that you have and will do well as stand-ins for better speakers later on.

I really like those monoprice speakers... perfect price for slowly getting rid of them, cnet approved, and I love monoprice in general! Thanks, those might be the winner.

Now if the friggen receiver hadn't just gone up $35 over night on amazon...
