Can't believe it was over 5 years ago already but my sophomore year of college I bought my first flatscreen for my single dorm as well (I learned the hard way that you don't want to be paired with a random roommate your freshman year).
While you possibly can get away with 40", it will be FAR easier to go with 32" in terms of fitting everything in that tiny space. I know it would have been extremely difficult for me to fit a 40" TV in my dorm...and that doesn't even factor in how I was always bringing it home from school during winter and summer breaks (winter and summer at OU were 6 and 11 weeks, respectively).
IMO do yourself a favor and go the Vizio route (more affordable but still performs well) then save your dough for a larger TV when you move into a larger living area.
On a sidenote, I miss college.
