Looks like more budget-priced Blus are coming from Mill Creek...

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, April 23, 2012 - Mill Creek Entertainment, a leading home entertainment distribution company has just inked a home video distribution deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) covering US and Canadian territories. Under the licensing agreement Mill Creek Entertainment will distribute 250 films from the legendary SPHE catalog via a wide variety of DVD and Blu-ray compilations and collections to Mill Creek's extensive network of traditional and non-traditional retail partners. Mill Creek will distribute classics such as Ship of Fools, Bonjour Tristesse, The Last Detail, Avalon, The Chase and Agnes of God and audience favorites such as Hollywood Homicide, Hostel, All the Pretty Horses, Saving Silverman, Hollow Man and Vertical Limit.

This treasure trove of SPHE films represents a watershed enhancement of our growing filmed entertainment catalog, said Ian Warfield, President and COO of Mill Creek. We are excited to work with the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment team to deliver this amazing line-up of star-filled titles for the enjoyment of an even broader audience of consumers.

Many films included in this distribution deal will be made available in Blu-ray high definition format for the first time ever. Multi-feature standard definition DVD collections are also part of the strategic release plan to bring this vast assortment of classic and contemporary films to market. The first wave of releases can be expected Fall 2012 while the specific lineup of initial releases will be announced at a later date.

Let's hope we get an Ultraviolet DC Blu-Ray.

I'd love to see The Last Detail well-served.

What makes you say that?

Sony is most likely providing the transfers.

But the key question is are they old or new. Old being taken from HD masters made for HD broadcast and DVD use, which many catalog titles have been, and new being made after Blu-Ray came on the scene. We can't have any sort of an idea until the list of films is released.

Wonder if the new titles will be cinavia infected since Sony's in the mix now?

Old doesn't always mean bad, though. It *can* mean bad... but it doesn't have to mean bad.

Besides, if Sony released these themselves rather than selling to Mill Creek, they would use the same transfers... so I was wondering what specifically about Mill Creek makes these "bad" as the other poster feared.

The original cut was two hours, then it got cut down to 88 minutes for theatrical release and then re-edited (by Wimmer or so I assume given the lack of facts that say otherwise) into an Unrated Extended Cut that differs greatly from the theatrical version we have on Blu-Ray with several minutes of alternate footage and scenes. No reason has been given as to why the extended cut was not released on Blu-Ray in the US though they released it in Japan about a year after the theatrical hit Blu here.

Assuming Sony handles Mill Creek like they handle Image we will be fine.

Well, the Mill Creek releases I've reviewed so far have major compression issues. Their release of the Gamera series crammed two movies onto a BD-25. The space isn't there. Ernest Goes to Camp, Tie That Binds, Crater Lake Monster, and a few others have notable issues with compression too.

Thanks... That's what I was wondering about... as I can't say that I know I have any Mill Creek releases (doesn't mean that I don't, I just don't know).

I already own Hollow Man, for example, which I think is on the list of movies now to be licensed/released by Mill Creek. I thought about getting the Mill Creek "That 70s Show" season 1, but haven't purchased yet... and I thought that got good reviews.

It did and it looks good too.

I didn't see a lot of compression issues myself on the Mill Creek Buena Vista titles, more that the HD masters used on those titles looked to be pretty ancient on the majority of them.
