Rear surrounds placement

I need help figuring out the best wall to mount my right rear surround on. The speakers are Paradigm ADP-170 dipole's. The squared off portion of the room is about 14' x 14'. The back of the room opens into the dining room and kitchen. Opening is about 8' wide.

If I mount the speaker in location #1, it will be directly inline with the ears of those sitting on the love seat. Location #2 will put the speakers behind the listening area.

Attached are two photos. The first picture shows the right wall (when facing TV). Should I mount the speaker in location #1 or #2?

Probably location 2...... And I'm assuming you really don't mean rear surrounds, just surrounds right? Rear surrounds are only found in 7.1 or higher.

Yes, just surrounds in a 5.1 system.

I've attached a crude drawing of the room. This should give a better idea of what I'm trying to do.

Should I mount the rears in position #1 or position #2?

Ok... That drawing totally changed my opinion.... Position 1 gets my vote.

Another vote for position #1, since those locations will keep the left and right surround speakers at roughly the same angle to the main listening position.

Thanks, guys!

#1

I was confused by the two initial pictures, and didn't realize there were two different locations in each.

Perhaps the speakers are too high on the wall? Or are they angled down some?

They are way too high! Way way too high M

Why? Just what is the height you determined from the pix?

perhaps from the pictures in the OP first post - though they do say subsequently at ear heigh :-)

Position #1, but 2-3 feet above ear level, as Dolby recommends. Tilt them down to ear level so that tweeter frequencies aren't lost.

Position one without question. You always want the nulls facing you. This is the front of the speaker that usually has no driver or a non-directional low frequency driver.
