"Sometimes love requires a simple twist of fate"

Film Synopsis:

Buddy Amaral (Affleck) is a smooth-talking, skirt-chasing ad exec who is enjoying his high powered career. Then, a sudden twist of fate changes everything and leads him into the life of Abby Janello (Paltrow), in this endearing story about finding love in the unexpected.

My Take:

Bounce is one of those movies that for whatever reason I have never gotten around to seeing. I like Ben Affleck and Gweneth Paltrow so when I saw the press announcement for the Blu-ray release I requested a copy for review. Written and directed by Don Roos Bounce is a pretty typical romance/drama that revolves around a story about two strangers that find love amidst unusual circumstances. The premise is based on the fate/destiny love theme and plays out by the numbers with the requisite dramatic twist/reveal, full circle romance and fair character development. I didn't have a problem with that but would have preferred better chemistry between Affleck and Paltrow. I enjoyed Johnny Galecki's portrayal of the abrasively sarcastic Seth as well as the tender moments involving the kids. I didn't especially care for the story's didactic undertone and the clichéd narrative left no surprises but when the smoke cleared I found Bounce to be mildly entertaining and ultimately worth watching.

.

Parental Guide:

The rating is for some language and sensuality.

Bounce comes to Blu-ray from Lionsgate featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 18 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 1.8 Mbps.

This film has a distinctive visual style that utilizes a light sepia toned chromatic that predominate the images onscreen. This left colors and skin tones appearing muted and devoid of natural looking hues and tonal saturation. While this in inherent I couldn't help but find it occasionally distracting. Blacks were average looking which didn't provide a good sense of depth during darker scenes. Detail in low level backgrounds was appreciable but not defining. Resolution and detail were distinguishable however I noted that the video lacked subtle delineation and defining sharpness. The end result is a fair but unremarkable high definition presentation.

The DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround mix features dialogue that is full bodied with defining tonal characteristics and prominent soundstage position. High level detail is apparent as low level sounds, music and voices is rendered with discerning clarity and depth. There is little call for active surround activity and extended dynamics however there are atmospherics that occasionally broaden the soundstage in support of the venues being depicted onscreen. Based on the source material this audio presentation more than gets the job done.

Bonus Features:

  • Audio commentary with writer/director Don Roos and co-producer Bobby Cohen

  • Scene specific audio commentary with director Don Roos, Gweneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck

  • 14 deleted scenes with optional commentary by writer/director Don Roos and co-producer Bobby Cohen

  • Gag reel - 5 minutes

  • Need to be next to you music video

  • All about Bounce - 22 minute production featurette

  • Ben and Gweneth go behind the scenes - 22 minute featurette

Final Thoughts:

Bounce is a paint by the numbers romantic drama with a clichéd narrative that offers no surprises. Be that as it may, I found it enjoyable and worth watching, especially for genre fans. It makes its debut on Blu-ray Disc from Lionsgate featuring fair high definition video quality, clear lossless sound and a decent assortment of bonus supplements. If you're a fan this is probably worth picking up if the price is right.
