Carp's basement hide-out

UPDATED - 1/10/13 - Finally did something about the white outlets.  I took the extremely lazy way out.  I had some GIK 244 traps that I no longer use and covered up the outlets.  I have to admit my motivation was so I'd stop getting the suggestion to change my outlets to black or paint them, but I do find that I really like the all black look up front.

UPDATED - 12/23/12 - bought some new speakers - JTR Noesis Left, Right, and Center.  Sold my eD Cinema 12's LRC to Archaea.

 

LOVE these speakers.  Quite an over the top investment for me, but I think I'll have these for life.

UPDATED - 9/9/12 - added pics and the end of the post, I recently upgraded to 7.1 from 5.1.

 

 

This is my escape from the girls. Hey, I love my wife and daughters (3 and 6 years old), but it's great to have my "own room".

We've lived in the house for 10 years, originally it was 2 rooms. I was super motivated when we moved in and I immediately tore down the wall to make it one big room. It used to have a drop ceiling which was a rattle nightmare, now that I have drywall I'm down to hardly any rattles.

Speakers: Elemental Designs Cinema Series - 12's for front and center, 6" rears

Subwoofers: Seaton Submersives

Receiver: Pioneer Elite vsx 53

Sub eq: Velodyne SMS-1

Blu-Ray Player: Panasonic something or other.... I need to upgrade.

Projector: Epson 8350

Bass Traps: GIK Tri Corner traps, 2 in each corner.














Here is the bass freq response. The higher line is program 2 on the Submersive, the lower line is program 1. Program 2 is supposed to give a 3db boost down low, looks like that's the case.

UPDATE - 9/9/12 - went from 5.1 to 7.1.  I kept the original surrounds speakers in the back and they are now the rear surrounds and bought 2 new speakers for the side surrounds.  I love the results.  All speakers are eD Cimema 6".

I moved the subwoofers to one corner stacked and made some speaker stands for the speakers

*sigh* since switching subs from Captivators to Submersives I'm going to have to bury yet another cord under the carpet (Caps were passive so speaker wire is all buried under the carpet). I thought I was done with that, but I'm starting to see that it's never going to end.

Scott, the screen is 158 inches diagonal. Here is a picture with my youngest daughter to give an idea of the size - don't worry she was not in the room when we watched this movie!

The picture is much sharper in person, you can see how blurry my daughters face is too. Crappy camera I guess.

eD cinema 12 up close. Love these speakers.





Masking panels in, old Magnepan speakers with Captivators and 6 inch eD cinema speaker that I sent back in favor of a custom made 12" cinema center.

Thanks! I love the eD speakers. They are so dynamic for movies but at the same time sound great for music. I was nervous going from Maggies to a "movie speaker" but I actually like them more for music which really surprised me. They aren't the least bit harsh either, it's really a smooth sounding speaker. Highly recommended.

I know it's crazy how your perceptions change. My current screen doesn't even seem big anymore!!

Ha, yeah the wires didn't use to bother me but for some reason they do now. Hey, I just noticed that you posted your room too I'll take a look.

BTW, the screen is 124" diagonal with the masking panels in (16:9).

65 inch mits rear projection, it was a great tv, used it for 10 years with no problems.

SVS - can't remember the model #. It had 2 12" drivers in it.

Axiom m60 mains and 150 center. HSU MBM-12 right in front of the couch sitting up against it.





I was never happy with the sound with this setup. Movies were pretty good but music was harsh, harsh, harsh. I tried all different configurations/setups with the room as far as where the couch, tv, and speakers were located and still the same result. Harsh music. I was never happy with the bass, my current setup with subs kills what I had then. I tried moving the sub all over the room of course too.

Track lighting was in the room when we bought the house, hated that too.

What's interesting is that I have a pair of Axiom m3's in my kitchen that sound really good.

I did like those Maggies. I sold them 2 hours after putting them up on Craigs list to a guy that lived 2 miles away. He recently stopped by to tell me how much he loves them.

I have thought about this. I know I can paint or just buy new plate covers, but I just haven't felt like changing out the actual sockets. Is it ok to paint those? I do still want the far left outlet to work since a Submersive is plugged into it.

Yeah, just selling the old dinosaur Mits RPTV made the room seem huge. It also made music sound better, that thing stood so far out from the wall.

I posted these a long time ago in the Captivator thread, but in case some haven't seen these before.

Yeah, it's a huge sub but actually I felt like it wasn't that crazy big for how much output you get. I mean compare it to the size of a CHT 18.2 and it seems small.

I prefer the look of these to my Submersives. The Captivators just look so mean... and they are!!!

Up close look at my old SVS. I sold this to another member, I hope he's still liking it. I never really liked it in my room but thought it sounded a lot better when we set it up in his room. His room was much larger, it made no sense...

This was the first day I fired up the projector. I was stunned. I couldn't believe how good it looked on just a tan wall with all the lights on. I should have gone to a projector years ago.






I highly recommend buying a projector before a screen. When I adjusted the size I knew right away I wanted the biggest picture possible, it didn't seem any less clear to me the larger it went. I was thinking, can I just have the entire wall be my screen??

I went with 2:35:1 because I was more height limited than width. That and I didn't want the screen to shrink when it was movie time. 2:35:1 rules!!! That pop-up menu at the bottom is where the black bars are. Kind of annoying now that I have a frame but not a big deal.
