Looking for a quality receiver for under 300, New or Older receiver?

I see that I could get something like a new Denon 1712 in that budget. Which has MultEQ XT, bunch of hdmi ports, and what looks like decent amp and other components. But really not much else.

Or I could get on EBay and look at things like the denon 2809, 3808, Onkyo 805, or others which also have MultEQ XT, but also have preamp outputs if needed, stronger amp section,... Those can also be found for under 300.

From what I have been reading it sounds like going with a quality receiver with MultEQ XT should get me the best sound.

But then how would that compare to something like a marantz SR7001?

Sound quality is the main thing I am looking for.

Right now it's looking like the denon 2809 or onkyo 805 might be the way to go if I can find a good price?

based on what I see here and other sites, warranty is important to me. I wouldn't consider anything with out one unless it was give away priced.

I've heard really good things about the sound quality of the Marantz SR7001. I own a SR4001 but I'm sure the 7001 has a beefier amp section.

I own the Denon 989 which is bascially the same as the 2809. Works great for me and it does have 7.1 preouts for external amplification. It'll sound the same as the AVR 1712, it just has 4 HDMI inputs instead of 6 and doesn't pass 3D video since the HDMI version is 1.3 instead of 1.4. Not a big deal since I don't own a 3D display. The 989/2809 has more features including analog to HDMI video conversion plus the 7.1 preouts and analog inputs.

The Denon 2809 on ebay doesn't come with the Audyssey mic or remotes, you'll want both. The 2809 actually came with two remotes. Make sure you get the remote and mic if you go for any of these receivers.

I've read great things about the Onkyo 805 provided you don't get one with HDMI problems. Onkyo's reliability has been questionable the past few years. You may be taking your chances with their used products.

What speakers do you have?

The SR4200 doesn't have HDMI or Audyssey MultiEQ so those may be some advantages that could interest you.
