Looking for Bookshelves $400-600

I'm looking for a set of bookshelves in the $400-600 range for use in my living room setup. This will be used for 70% music 30% HT/Games. Sources will be CDs and SACDs and the occasional bluray movie. I will eventually add a matching center channel. Will be driven with my Marantz SR5005 and possibly an external amp (most likely 2-ch) down the road. Room is 13x18 with the main listening area approx. 11' from the speakers.

I'm basically looking for a speaker that will shine in 2-ch for music and won't be a complete slouch for HT. I currently have an all Polk Monitor setup that I've had for years and am ready to move up. I don't mind the Polks but for music the tweeter can be very harsh and fatiguing.

I won't tell you what I've looked at so far. Hit me with some suggestions and I'll try to track them down to listen. I can get to the DC area in about 2 1/2 hrs, Philly in 3.

I also reccomend the Monitor Audio Silver RX1 > audition them and if you like them,
then see if you can get a deal.

Pls go to audition for Wharfedale Diamond 10.2, this pair is far better than RX1 as I guess that the sound of RX1 is too bright.

I personally think budget studio monitors like the JBL 2328p or Mackie HR-824 have a lot to offer 2 channel listeners. There are plenty of other studio monitors but those are two that came to mind.

My vote would be for the definitive studio monitors listed above or these Goldenear Aons....

Jeff

For the OP's budget I'd go with the 340SEs instead (just got a pair of 170SEs, don't get me wrong ). Or stretch the budget and get Sierra-1's (also Ascend), which are my new favorites (unless a pair comes available used then maybe within your budget).

Polk LSi9 (from their ebay store) might work well, then move the Monitors to surround duty. There are lots of great suggestions here though, good luck with your choice.

Source Loudspeakers 1.5 WCA might work.

Thanks for all the replies!

The Polk Lsi's are out because I wouldn't be comfortable running them without an amp (and with the LsiC I'd need at least a 3-channel rather than stereo). The Klipsch are also out because I'm not crazy about their sound. Are the B&W 685's very different from the 602s? A good friend of mine has those and I'm not in love with them either. The kevlar woofer just sounds too much like... well, kevlar.

All of these look like great options... I've been eyeballing the KEFs for a while now. Really want to get my ears on a pair. Same with Monitor Audio.

These (340SEs) also seem like a good option. Again, I just need to get my ears on some of these choices. Thanks again for all the great replies. If anyone has anything to add, I'll throw it on the list!

edit: Thanks to those who didn't suggest things in the $800+ range! $600 is absolutely pushing it (although $650 might be doable if I play my cards right with the Mrs.). I'm still intending to replace my subwoofer (~$600) and add a center channel.

Thanks! As much as I don't want to have to eat a bunch of return shipping costs, I don't want to completely rule out the great ID options... I just have this fear of dumping $200 on return costs and winding up picking a set that I got in a shop haha

NHT 3s are good in under $1,000 cathegory, try e-mailing their sale and bargain. I think you could talk them down to $600 - $700 for a pair, they pay shipping both ways if you don't like the speakers.
Aperion pays shipping both ways, EMPTek only pays shipping 1 way I think, might be wrong though.

Or pick a few speakers that normally cost $1000+ and hunt them down used on audiogon. You could get something like Salk bookshelves for $600.

But Q300 suppose to be decent.

I've taken "chances" with an ID sub (Epik Empire) and Ascend speakers (started off with the HTM200SEs, then the Sierras, now the 170SEs. All based on reading owners reports on various forums. No regrets, never needed to take Ascend up on their 30day trial thing (and check out their B-stock offerings). But I did actually suggest something in the 800 range...

I did a few months ago listen to the B&W 685s at BB, wasn't particularly impressed but hard to say how they might compare A/B to what I've got now. Although I am pretty sure the Sierras would sound much better, not so sure about the 170SEs as I've not tried them as L/Rs as yet (just surrounds) but I think they would do well against them...for a much better price.
