I connected an Xbox to my Denon AVR-1712 receiver using an HDMI cable. I setup the Xbox as a media extender, in order to access media files stored on my HTPC, and can access and stream the avi container movies from my HTPC - no problem there.
But here is the issue. The Dolby PLII on the receiver is able to matrix some of the movies into 5.1 surround, but some of the movies play only out of the center channel speaker. Mostly the latter are older movies.
Has anyone run into this sort of issue? Perhaps these older movies were encoded in monaural sound, and my understanding is Dolby can't matrix a mono track into surround? I will try opening some of the avi containers to get a closer look at the audio track characteristics. But Dolby PLII should be able to matrix any stereo audio source into 5.1 channel surround - correct?
