Speakers recommendation for Denon 1611 or Denon 1712

I'm pretty new to the Audio world but have been reading like nuts HIFI guides, manuals, forums and reviews for the past 3 months (have gotten pretty geeky in that sense, have understood all technical aspects) and have decided that I want to buy the Denon 1611 ($320) or Denon 1712 (if it drops to $350) for Christmas.

I based this decision on sound quality and accuracy, low distorsion, Audyssey MultEQ and don't need all the extras that Onkyo offers. Feel free to recommend other receivers within that price range.

I have never owned a home theater system before but already have a Samsung 32" HDTV (720p) and a Panasonic blu ray player, pretty happy with that.

I wouldn't be able to spent more than $250-$300 for speakers by the time I make both purchases (Christmas)...

One set has specially caught my eye: Onkyo SKS-HT540 7.1

It has received pretty good reviews at CNET and at Amazon.

What I'm not sure about is whether I should go for that set or buy like a Polk Audio CS10 and Polk Audio Monitor 60 AM6025 for the time being until I save some more for a sub and surrounds. My dad could even lend me some old Panasonic speakers (6" woofer, 1" tweeter) that came with his defective all in one system for the time being.

So, the questions is: would I experience a significant improvement in audio quality and accuracy if I go for separate components (Polk Audio or suggestion within $300 for center and fronts) or would the Onkyo set be the best bang for the buck?

Uses would be Movies (60%) and Music (40%) but I would really like to experience an accurate sound when it comes to music since I like Classical, Jazz, Blues, Rock and Ethnic music among others. Regarding movies, I'd like to have good bass and medium to loud sound level (not rock concert loud).

Room dimensions: 2.65m (W) x 4.30m (D) x 2.46m (H)

8.83' x 14.33' x 8.2'

Definitely. Start with fewer components and build on. The Polks are better quality, and the sub in that setup is more a mid-bass module than a sub that will produce well for HT. If it were me, I'd rather go with the Monitor60s and a good sub like the BIC F12 to start, and then wait a year to do any upgrades over going with the Onkyo set now.

And then see how your dad's old Panasonics work for surrounds.

BTW: The Denon 1612 is currently $251.

Are you saying you want to buy these items for Christmas? That is 8 months away. The whole market can be different by then.

@ cel4145: Are you saying that the Monitor 60s + subwoofer can be enough for the time being?

I was thinking on buying the center channel first instead of the subwoofer since it's the one that handles the dialog, or am I wrong?

@Reefdvr27: I know what you mean but sadly, Christmas would be soonest time I can buy the whole HT. I just hope to get lucky on Black Friday. :P

Still, even if the prices change a bit I don't want to deviate from the Denon 1611 and the Polk Monitor 60s.

What do you guys think of the Polk Audio PSW10 sub, is the BIC F12 way better?

I would get two front speakers and sub, then the center channel. The two front speakers can handle the dialog if you configure the receiver with no center in the speaker setup.

IMHO 2.1 is much better than 3.0.

PSW10 sub sucks, no other way to put it...50W sub with no low end. Get the BIC F12, PSW505 or Energy s10.3. All can be found under $200 when on sale.

I think it's better to buy in pieces, but what what you want, than to get it all at once.

I started out with Infinity Primus P162 bookshelves and an old receiver. I added a sub, then the center. I got the P363 tower speakers for Christmas, and finally bought my Denon 1712 two weeks ago. It took me about a year and a half, but I have a setup that I'm happy with, and it's much better than what I would have gotten if I had to buy it all at once.

I would decide what the best setup is you think your mid-term budget will allow, then start buying a little at a time.

Hello guys, thank you all for the suggestions!

I just saw the Denon 1712 at Amazon for $317 which is a steal. I could buy it right now along with some Polk Audio Monitor 70s ($250) and wait until Christmas for the BIC F12 and maybe a center speaker. The 70s seem like excellent speakers and should be able to work without a sub for a while due to their frequency range, right?

Do you think that this would be a good option? The Denon is way to cheap to let it go away at that price.

No doubt that the Monitor70 is a better speaker. Yet, the lower -3db limit on the Monitor60s is 48hz; the Monitor70s 40hz. So sure. It will fill in a little lower, but it doesn't cover all the range that a subwoofer will. And personally, if this system is mainly meant for HT, I would get the Monitor 60s and put the extra money into a better sub.

To add to what afrogt said, avoid the PSW10 like the plague. In addition to his list, you might like at the Premier Acoustic PA-120, which is considered a little step up from the BIC F12.

Denon looks good on paper but sound quality and built are superior on a Marantz receiver. I wouldn't get another Denon. But if you must get Denon, I'd recommend revealing rather bright speakers to compensate their lack of highs.

Hello guys,

I believe there's a way for me to buy the Denon 1712, Polk Monitor 60s and the BIC F12 within the next two months, I've made up my mind with that setup.

Now, if I have some extra money to spare, what would be the smartest choice, getting some surrounds like Polk Monitor 30s or Polk Monitor 40s (too big for surrounds???) or investing in a center channel like Polk CS10, CS20 (streching it)?

I might be the exception, but I'd rather go without my center than my rear speakers. Sure, the center improves the front sound stage. But you don't have "surround sound" until you have the rear speakers. And if you have nice towers, you already have a pretty good front sound stage even without the center. But I might be the minority.

I'd get the Monitor30s and save the money toward the better center. I agree with people when they say get the best matching speaker you can for the center.

The xx12 Denon receivers are being cleared out at various retailers for the new xx13 receivers. I just purchased a AVR-1612 for $180 earlier tonight. Per AVS rules, I'm not going to post a link, but that's quite a markdown.

Makes sense, I have been reading about center speakers a bit and the one that catches my eye is the Polk Audio CS2 instead of the CS1. It seems the CS2 blends better with the Monitor 60s.

I need to make a correction to my Dad's speakers, finally found the specs:

Panasonic SB-AK17
2 way speaker system
12cm woofer
6cm tweeter
6 Ohm
Input power 100W
Output sound pressure level 85dB/W at 1m
Crossover frequency 8 Khz
Frequency range 45 Hz -22 Hz (-16dB)

I guess they won't be of much use in the end, will they? Polk 30s can help here. I could only buy a pair of Polk 30s though so should I use the Panasonics in the mean time and if so in which position (side or rear)?

The CS2 is quite a bit better than the CS1 in my opinion, given the relatively small price difference when they are found on clearance.

As far as Monitor 30s vs 40s, the 40s are nicer speakers, but the 30's may fit better. My father-in-law has 30's for his rear speakers, but he also has an awkward setup and one speaker is mounted on the wall right where you walk. The depth of the 30 was a stretch, so the 40 was a no-go for him. If you have the room, I'd take the 40's for rear surrounds.

The Denon 1712 is going for ~$275-280 at various places now (I just ordered mine at Buy.com and with 10% in store credit back my net is around $250). Your local BB will also probably match an active deal on discontinued stock. They are all clearing last year's models out NOW, so if you really want that receiver, or the 1612, you should do it in the next few days/weeks while they are still available.
