Recommend some front and center speakers for me.

Hi all,

I'm looking to be in the market for some new speakers in the next few months. This will be my first foray into "real" speakers -- mt current setup is an Onkyo HT-S590 HTIB. I've replaced the sub with a BIC V1020, and I'll be pulling the trigger on a Denon AVR soon, most likely the 2113CI when that gets announced next month.

So that leaves me with five little speakers. I'd like to replace the center first, then the front L and R. The surrounds will have to wait until later.

The system is in my living room, which is 12x15x8, with the TV on the 12 foot wall. A large portion of the listener's left wall is open to the kitchen+dining room, 12x20. A large portion of the rear wall is open to a stairwell and hallway.

Probably 90% of the time I just watch TV with my wife, but the system will also be used for movies and casual music listening. I like good, clean SQ but I'm no audiophile.

I'd like to spend no more than $500 on all three speakers. The center will most likely be mounted on a bracket above the TV, and the L and R will be on bookshelves on either side. I'll set a rough upper limit of 10" on the physical height of the speaker enclosures so that they don't look ridiculous on my bookshelves, because then my wife will veto the whole thing.

Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Can't help with $500, but I know others will be able too ^_^.

If your willing to go 1k, you can get a great 5.0 set:

(If your interested, give paul a call to make sure which cabinet is in stock)

The drivers are very high regarded:

M4N: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...97-434&FTR=m4n
TN25: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/show...number=297-408
BG8N: (Not sold in America, however, being the bass driver, the towers are rated down to 35hz)

Good luck!

Heh, those look sweet, but no way I'm putting nearly four-foot-tall towers on top of my bookshelves. :-) Unfortunately, space constraints are a limiting factor here. I know I said 10" was a rough height limit, but not that rough!

As for the budget, I'd go to 750 for the right set if it included the rear surrounds.

How big can the center speaker be?

10" isn't very tall for bookshelf speakers. You could get these Cambridge s30's though.

Matching S50 center

That's only $420 for 3 front speakers. Get another pair of s30's for surrounds and you've spent $640.

If you can get larger bookshelf speakers then look at the Energy RC-10 and RC LCR center. $550 for 3 front speakers.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys! 12-13" high isn't out of the question.

As for the center speaker size, I'm not sure. It needs to not be silly-big above or below my 42" plasma, which none of these candidates are.

Keep 'em coming!

Polk monitors would be a great budget option.
Bookshelves:

Surrounds:

The monitor 30's are wall mountable... I've had a pair since 2004 and they've never let me down. I've used them almost everywhere in every application.

Great budget speakers!

This uses $14 drivers but cost $900 discounted. Hmm...

Just going by what you have listed for diamentions "height" wise for the shelfs you did not list width wise.... so maybe these will work??
http://www.sounddistributors.com/buy...stech+Speakers
Dimensions: 10"H x 25 1/2"W x 6"D

I use this as a center speaker as the SQ is fantastic!! They are only 6" in depth and no port's so they are easy to place.

Just a suggestion is all! Good luck
Jeff

PS THey make a bit smaller speaker with 6.5" drivers as well....

I would suggest Polk Monitor 40 speakers for the front; It's tough to get decent sound quality with front speakers that are way too small.

You can get those for $170 on Amazon and the CS10 center speaker for $130, so the total cost is only $300.

If you really are set on getting speakers that small, the Cambridge S30 speakers are probably your best bet; they are 9 inches tall and a pair goes for $219. The Cambridge S50 center speaker is $199.

THink about Ascend's HTM-200 SE's, you can get a matching center and left/right channel for $500. Fantasic speakers for HT or casual music listening. Can be wall, or shelf mounted, very SMOOTH midrange. FOr that size room these would fit your budget and audio needs perfectly. SOme of the other recommendations above I kind of question a bit, but Ascend makes no nonsense, no hype quality speakers with SQ and integration as the first priorities: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages...00/htm200.html
