Sony ES first hand "Warentee" issues

Hello Everyone,

Been a long time follower of this site and after hearing talk about the 5600ES and how the Warrentee has influenced people to buy the newest ES flagship, I felt no is the time to post.

I used to own an STR-DA3ES as well as and SCD-222ES 5 disc ES changer, both of which I bought from real HIFI stores. Roberts Electronics in New London CT and Tweeter Ect. Warwick R.I.

I moved to Texas, very close to Sony's repair center in Plano Texas, after Joining the USAF. I had my DA3 go out on me and sent it in to Sony. They said my reciever was water damaged, and quoted me over $400 dollars to repair.

I replaced it with a 3200ES at the time from EBay because the I didn't care about the warrentee that much anymore.

On year later my SCD222ES would not power on. It had to be something simple such as the switch or something. I paid to ship it to Sony, (I think I paid for the shipping, sony may have fitted the bill for that)

Anyhow, guess what. Water damage. Let me tell you, there was no water damage to the SCD-222ES, the think was on the 3rd shelf of a Salamander component rack with zero chance of being damaged.

I strongly believe because Sony many not carry replacement parts for all of these components, that they are using an "out" to not cover their stuff.

Per the manual I used a lightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the 222, I think they saw a smudge and issued a too-bad-so-sad response.

They quoted over $400 to fix the 222 as well. Both of these lousy service requests took place a few years ago, however I felt the need to share my experience before someone chooses Sony ES partially because of their warrentee.

Have a great day everyone.

On the other hand...I had my 1999 Sony SCD-777ES SACD player "lock up"; the top CD-loading door would not open; and when I sent it to Texas they fixed it for a flat $150 service fee (the 5-year warranty had expired) and also put in a new laser/tracking assembly and aligned it. They also paid the return shipping.

That made me happy.

By the way; the "water damage" they were talking about may have been due to condensation in the unit. My owner's manual cautions that if the unit is in a cool or humid environment, condensation in the unit can cause problems. They advise warming the unit up for at least 10 minutes before using it, or preferably just leaving the unit on at all times to keep it warm. I don't know where you were in Texas, but high humidity is a problem in many places.

How long ago was that? I would really like to consider Sony ES again in the future. I can understand how they work. My brother-in-law has an old Yamaha RX-V1 that he wanted me to optimize, and holy DSP batman, can't figure out anything on that amp.

Suprised they didn't offer a flat rate, but if you are right, the flat-rate may not have applied. It just sticks because I had no way to tell if they we being honest, after they rejected the 222, I opened the case. The thing looked pristine.

I guess we'll find a out a trend or not perhaps.
