Wow, what a great time to be buying a projector!

$1,000 will buy a very nice 1080P projector these days. With $1,500 you might be able to get one with 3D.

Unless you have placement issue and require lens shift, I recommend DLP projectors because they are maintenance free and very reliable. I have two. My first DLP projector is about 7 year old and still works like new. The second and current DLP projector is only a year old and already has almost 2,000hrs on it. It just works and works.

I love my DLP projectors because I don't have to deal with cleaning the filter, dust blob issue, convergence issue, burned out polarizers, etc., etc.

$1500 is about the price for three good 3D projectors: Epson 3010, Acer 9500, and Optoma HD33. They have several desirable features in addition to 3D. All three of those want to be ceiling mounted.

If you forego 3D you can get good projectors for about $1000, but they will also lack those desirable features I mentioned about the 3D models. My personal recommendation is to get one of the three above, and you'll be set without regret.
