2112CI or 1913

Looking to make a move during the clearance sales this week since the 2013 Denon line is out.

Basically I've narrowed it down to three choices and I am looking for that last bit of tips/concerns/opinions to help me pick.

1) Denon 1612 ~250 clearance sales
or
2) Denon 1913 ~570 new
vs
3) Denon 2112CI ~430 new-open box @ EE

Essentially its whether I want networking, analog>digital hdmi, and upscaling or not.
I know the the 19xx and 21xxCI are really similar, and a number of people have mentioned that for price difference just upgrade to the 21xxCI, but since I'm looking at the 1913 versus the 2112CI I was wondering if there was something I overlooked or didn't notice besides that the 1913 doesnt have AM tuner. I can live without that.

Any help is appreciated.

2112ci will be marked down in about 4 to 6 weeks I think?

I'm in a similar spot, but debating between the 1713 and 2112ci. Both have networking, 1713 adds AirPlay independent to zone 2, but loses some of the inputs & features of the 2112. If you go with a 19xx you will lose the audyssey multeq xt of the 17xx and 19xx.

You mean 21xx not 19xx?

^^^^^

Good catch, thanks. Yup meant 21xx. The XT skips the 19xx.

Still struggle typing on the iPhone.

Note that adding an Apple TV not only gives you independent Airplay to Zone 2 on any XX12 model, but also allows you to stream video from your iPhone, iPad, etc.

The new 2113CI won't get announced/release for another month yea?

Even still, I can't see them marking the 2112CI much further down than what you can get at now. I can wait, but the money's burning a hole in my pocket if you know what I mean. haha

I'll ponder over the 1913 vs the 2112CI some more then. I'm gonna eliminate the 1612 just because the networking will future proof it a little more. That and the analog>digital will let me use my NES and N64 without having to change them back and forth. Plus I can upgrade to a higher model in a year or so and use the old one as my bedroom set and still have newer features.

The current problem with networked AV receivers is that they network the A but not the V. I need to access A/V stored on my HTPC over a home network. I am currently using an Xbox as a media extender, but considering a WD Live box as well, and at some point might just connect my HTPC to the receiver directly.

So depending on your needs, network connectivity on a receiver could be useful, redundant, or even inferior to other options. In my case, I was on a budget, and so jumped on a recent deal for the Denon AVR-1712 non-networked receiver, since as mentioned I use other devices to get network content.

Yeah I've been contemplating that too. With that setup, I'm assuming I would connect the HDMI from the ATV to the 2112, and the ATV optical audio to my external amp (via a converter to RCA). This way I could stream atv to the TV if I want, or just play itunes on the deck and have the game on in the living room. Does that sound right?

^^
Yup ... HDMI for main zone and optical-->RCA for Zone 2.

Thanks jd. Gonna give it a few weeks and call EE for a 1712 (dad) and a 2112.

Do that now.. What are you waiting for?

My basement is unfinished, I only have the receiver and some equipment connected down there for now, to test it out. This summer I will finish the basement with drywall etc, and then setup the home theater permanently. But even then, I like having the HTPC at the current location on the living room TV, and so will need A/V networking to the downstairs receiver location. Network receivers are still behind the times at least in terms of A/V, because they don't handle the V side of networking. Fortunately there are other devices that can handle the video side, which can make the need for built-in receiver networking redundant or even inferior. Also I bet in a few years receivers will be incorporating video along with the current audio networking.

Overlooked the fact that the 1913 gets 1080p upscaling and the 2112CI doesn't. So i'd have to go to the 2312CI to get that.

At which point the only difference between the two is the In-Command features and pre-out on the 2312CI? Looks like a new 2312CI and 1913 are about evenly priced.
Upscaling is overrated. It is still a source less than 1080p and it can never be anybetter, only more washed over with digital processing.

Yea i know its never really 1080p just trying to look it with processing effects.

So much for my narrowing my choices down.

Now I'm back to:

No networking -1712 ~250
Network + analog>digi HDMI - 2112CI ~440
Network + analog>digi + upscaling - 1913 or 2313CI. ~600

I'm so terrible at making decisions. sigh
post #17 of 19
Note that the video upscaling chips used by Denon in these lower level models has never added much more than what the TV or source could actually do on their own.

I pulled the trigger on a 2112 from EE (and a 1712 for a system I'm putting together for my folks). Added features of networking, firmware updates, warranty, etc sealed the deal for me. Plus I wanted zone 2 pre outs for my external amp/home audio system.

Yea thinking about it I really wouldn't use it, or care about what I would use it on (Old school video game systems ).

I'm leaning towards the 2112CI right now. Compared to the 1913 and 2313CI the only feature I might use would be the 1080p upscaling. The extras on the 2313CI don't apply to me and the additions in the xx13s don't seem to offer much to really shine over the xx12s I'm looking at esp at a features for price comparison.

EDIT - Correction, I stopped being indecisive and bought the 2112CI from EE.
