High-Powered Action 6 pack... anyone seen this?

I was at walmart today and saw this for $15... at least 3 of the movies interest me but i'm wondering about the transfers/encodes since it's 6 movies crammed onto 2 discs (at least they are 50GB discs though) especially how the transfer and encode for equilibrium compares to the existing stand alone releases

The Equilibrium transfer is/was being discussed in its original thread (and generally positively under the circumstances), but the biggie is that this is the first Region A release that's in OAR since the Japanese BD. (As a weird tradeoff, at least two other movies in the set IIRC were cropped to 1.78:1.) Annoyingly, neither of the Walmarts near my house have ever had this set...I ended up snagging it off Amazon, and it should be here next week.

+1. Worth it for Equilibrium alone.

For those interested into technical specs: My BDInfo scan can be found Here.

Which ones are cropped?

As per the case it appears to be half and half:

The Yards: 1.78:1 (from 2.39:1)
Equilibrium: 2.35:1 (OAR)
Supercop: 1.78:1 (from either 2.39:1 or 2.35:1)
No Code Of Conduct: 1.85:1 (this appears to be OAR)
Hidden Assassin: 1.78:1 (from 1.85:1)
The Lookout: 2.40:1 (apparent misprint, since the film's OAR is 2.39:1)

It probably should be noted that the previous BD releases for The Yards and Supercop were apparently done in the same AR, so at least Echo Bridge is being consistent with those.

SUPERCOP cropped = they can kiss my @ss. Disgusting.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about that one specifically when I first heard about it. Then again, this is Echo Bridge we're talking about--AIUI the original Supercop BD was a mixed bag to begin with on top of the cropping (no Chinese audio track, cut by 5m), and this seems to be a straight lift from that. I've said it before--I just don't get these guys...

The audio on this is pretty terrible as well.

Blame Buena Vista too, it's probably an old HD broadcast master. The thing to remember is that labels like Echo Bridge, Mill creek, Twilight Time, Image, etc. are all licensing pre-existing transfers from the big studios. Sometimes they get a newer master like EQUILIBRIUM, other times we end up with SUPERCOP cropped. It's obviously up to the judgment of the label whether or not to release it, so you can knock them there, but I don't think they have much, if any, control over the aspect ratio and the transfer itself in most cases.

There is a a proper2.35:1 HD transfer for SUPERCOP. A good friend of mine so it in NYC at Miramax back when the Weinstein's were Miramax. Unfortunately....

There's no such thing as 2.35:1 on film. If something is filmed in scope then its OAR is 2.39:1 and only 2.39:1.

2.35:1 is just a term to describe the scope ratio. Getting so technical is just silly. Whatever.

Just saw this at Target for $12.99.

Watched this (Equilibrium) last night and I'd say it's well worth the $13. It's a hard one to judge given that I haven't seen the other Blu-rays. In some ways the PQ and AQ exceeded my expectations, but in others I found it a tiny bit disappointing. Some focus issues, weak special effects, and bad makeup made it a challenge to isolate any cases of filtering. I guess that says something in itself, in that the source material is transferred well enough to spot those issues and that they haven't been covered up with filtering. Grain was almost always visible (good!). I'm no expert, but every flaw I was able to spot can be attributed to the original filming. It's possible that some very minor softness might be alleviated by a higher bit rate, but I don't have the JP to compare in motion side by side.

The audio was just fine, dialog was clear, gunfire carried varying degrees of LFE weight, I don't have any complaints that I can attribute to the DTSHDMA track. The only problems stem back to the original recording, SFX selection, and editing choices and aren't technically relevant to this disc. Also, it's stupid that the box says "DTS 5.1" on the back even though it is lossless DTSHDMA 5.1 in reality.

I saw at Target having sale on Superman 1, 2 with Donnor's Cut and Returns in one set for $15.

I couldn't tell from the outside the packaging if they are all individual discs, or Returns is from Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology that has more bonus materials. It has have TrueDolby and PCM. Since the triple Sup set doesn't contain the bonus disc, I assume they are like the older edition.

If anyone bought this triple Sup set, please let us know if the discs are from the older edition or contains new bonus materials.

And just to add to the "rabble rabble", this is actually wrong. Anamorphic Panavision has an uncompressed image off the OCN of ~2.347 (or, 2.35:1). SMPTE standards for projection aperture are 2.39:1. The purpose of the slightly smaller vertical height of the projection aperture is to cover the odd splice line in film prints.

Rabble rabble!

I just bought this.
OAR and PowerDVD is reporting as 5.1 DTS Master Audio eek.gif
transfer quality doesnt look super great, and average data rate is between 12-18 video and 4800Kbps for audio.
