My XBR4 to my eyes has a better picture than the HX 850.

I've been looking at HX850 & HX750 and I agree about the glossy screen on the 850. The 750 is better but still glossier than my old 42" Sony RP.

I was at Fry's yesterday & the only 55" 750 they had was the floor model. Anyway I'm looking at all these glossy screens & they face each other across the aisle. What do I see on most of them? The TV in back of me across the aisle. When I get back home from shopping I really appreciate my matte screen & also matte bezel - just like a real movie theater.

However the 47W802 appears to perhaps be a replacement for the 750 and the 850 equivalent (the 900) is not available in 46 inch range. I can wait 6-8 weeks before purchasing as construction is just underway.

Dilemma: Do I buy the 46HX850 now while some are still available or do I hold out for new models and hope I like the new W802 as much? Thoughts?

UPDATE: so the Best Buy that showed this was in stock was wrong. Can't seem to find one anywhere. Now what? What is comparable? Especially want super thin bezel.

UPDATE 2: Found one at a Best Buy 90 minutes from here. Very last one in the region. Assured me it is new in box and not a floor model. Will pickup tomorrow. Hopefully I've made the right choice.

If you're waiting for the w802, you should check out the KDL-46HX750, it's the current comparable TV and it's quite inexpensive right now.

I went over my mothers house to visit and saw her sony hx909 full array with local dimming, and my hx850 doesn't even touch it. Those are the deepest blacks I ever seen with no flashinglighting or clouding.

Really? As good as plazma? I just put in an order for the hx850 @ 1800 CDN. The XBR was just too much money, about 3500 CDN. Hope I made a good choice. Was thinking about the Samsung ES8000, but I'm hearing of way too many issues. Plus I think I prefer the black bezel, hope I don't have any issues upon delivery this week.

I agree. You just can't replicate (at least yet) the deep blacks and great uniformity of a full array with local dimming. I have the 65hx950 and the blacks blow away the 65ES8000 I had for awhile and are slightly better then the 65VT50 I had as well.

I can confirm I will not be supplying the glass. Sick of people complaining about them being too glossy, don't you people have curtains!!!!!!!

I have noticed that he flash lighting is mainly on the the right side of my set and on most pictures of others it seems to be the same.

My right corner is indeed a bit worst than the left. On the left side, flashlighting is there and also a little bit of light bleed on the bottom of the screen, on the left side just up of the green power led light indicator. On all 5 sets I had in my hands, they all add similar flashlithing and light bleed at the bottom. Which leads me to believe they are either issues with assembly or a design flaw.

Could have gone with Gibbon Glass, Lemur Lexan, Primate Plexiglass or Ape Acrylic.

I guess no definitive answer

Damn that sucks.... The sony rep told me there would be but who knows... No mention of it on sonys website. Wish someone could chime in who was at CES and saw it.

The W900a also seems to only be available in 55" size. If you want 46" (might not be your case), you have to settle for a lower end TV which is very disapointing.

Fortunately I do want the 55. It's tempting to ahead and get a used 55 850 from amazon warehouse deals but that's another risk and they want way too much for them(2000). I have until feb 25 to return my es7100. Hopefully some more info comes out about the w900a by then.

Hi, first time poster here. I was in the market for a KDL46HX850 but came across a scratched 55HX850 and bought it at cost. Anyway, here is the scratch (luckily it only extends about 1/4" into the actual display area, where you can't see it from where I watch TV):

I have a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee so I figured I'd go for it. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I could fill this scratch to make it almost imperceptible. My idea right now is to color it in with a glossy black oil-based Sharpie marker, and if I want to go further, mix up some clear epoxy and *carefully* fill the scratch.

One more question - are there any specific problems defects I should look for in a display model? The set looks to be fine besides the scratch, I don't see corners lighting up moreso than others. The only thing I might be noticing is that the left half of the screen is slightly redder than the right half, which is more white. Still haven't calibrated it and my only display source is my computer hooked up via HDMI.

How's the HX850 for gaming? Will there be any input lag, even in game mode?

thanks

What size? The 55" is very hard to find right now. From what I've read the Sony does a good job at gaming. Even my SonyVW90ES projector does a good job.

I'm getting a 55" delivered today. In Canada, there's still lots of stock in Futureshop. I currently have a Sharp Aquos 46" 830u and it's been fine for gaming, hoping the Sony will be as good.

I am told it is a customer return with no screen anomalies, only minor cosmetic blemishes. Happy Holidays!

As of this posting, Crutchfield has another listing for the 55HX850 under "scratch and dent." If you're interested give them a call to get the particulars, but act fast--these sets tend to sell quickly!

the 830u is what, 2 years old? please let us know how you find hx850's performance in comparison.

i considered a Sharp but opted for the Sony instead.

yep, ive been very pleased with the PQ of the quattrons. The only thing lacking is the black levels of course, looking to step up a bit with the Sony. I'm hoping the HX850 will satisfy me for about 2 to 3 years until the OLEDs come down in price. Hopefully this will be my last and best LED tv.

I am a hardcore gamer and I am pretty happy with this tv. I play a lot of online multiplayer shooters on ps3 (killzone and modern warfare) and on xbox360 (halo and gears of war) and have no complaints. I don´t use the game mode I play on the cinema 1 setting , because I disable the aditional procesing factors like motionflow, smooth gradiant, and digital reality creation. But even when I have tried these settings ON I don´t feel that input lag is an issue.
Yah lag is a non issue on sonys. The pic quality is still great in game mode as well!

I found some information on repairing scratches on Gorilla Glass but most of it is for phones. Might work on your TV.

Or you might consider contacting Corning to find out if they have a fix:

The only negative about the Gorilla Glass is it can get minor surface scratches quite easily.... but those with an I-Phone or I-Pad already know all about that. Luckily, majority of the times, these micro scratches can not be seen unless shining a flashlight on the panel or natural sunlight is shining on it.

F-50 mann.... you may want to check for dead pixels and noticeable vertical banding before your exchange period is up. That way depending on how distracting those defects may be, you can still return it if you decide it bothers you too much.
