ok, good to know. I just got my tv and so far so good, haven't noticed any flash lighting. will need to play around with the settings. I checked some of the calibration settings on cnet and some other place but the picture seems quite dark. Anyone have any good settings for movie watching? I'll try some games later.

after playing around with the settings, for now im using cinema 1 with various adjustments/processing options. Seems great so far, tried a bit of 3d too, pretty good. Haven't noticed any flashlights or clouding when the screen is dark either, looks like a keeper.

'Screen' setting question- it's recommended that screen be set to wide mode- full, auto wide- off, and display area- full pixel.
Are these settings also recommended for standard DVD's with 4;3 aspect ratio and other SD content? watched one of my better concert movies last night, Roliing Stones-Live at the Max, and found picture very grainy and blotchy, looked better on my old Toshiba rear projection.

Thanks for the advice aztony. I sent a message to Corning, so hopefully they'll have a suggestion for me. I had also found that thread about removing scratches (among many others) on google but they refer to minor surface scratches that could be sanded/buffed out. I'm dealing with something that's about half a millimeter deep and a millimeter wide - easily catching a nail. Definitely going to need to be filled with something I believe.

cmay I haven't found any dead pixels and there doesn't seem to be any vertical banding, either, whew! I did notice in a dark video game that there is just barely perceptible flashlighting in one small area, which I find acceptable. The only thing that I'm curious about is the left half of the screen having a reddish tint whereas the right side has a whiter or bluer tint. This is most apparent when I have a full white screen, ie, notepad maximized. The only time I really notice this is when browsing websites with white backgrounds. It is not perceptible when watching video content, so I think I can live with it, especially considering how cheap I got this TV. All I gotta do is "fix" the scratch and I think I'll be a very happy camper!

I find it surprising that you find cinema made usable for competitive gaming, i was playing Far Cry 3 story and no matter how fast i pressed the correct buttons in one part of the story i kept getting killed. I then realised that u had left the tv in cinema mode after using a video on demand service. As soon as i switched to game mode i completed that particular part easy.

Also playing private gears of war 3 with a friend and me host no matter what i did i couldn't kill him, the game felt sluggish. Again i had stupidly left it in cinema mode. Switching to game mode and the tables soon turned.

I know though it's a very personal thing and i am coming from a Samsung that had very low input lag.

What scene/settings are you using?

Sounds more setting related than screen display size.

Could also be screen size related, if the Toshiba was smaller the size of the Sony could be showing up artifacts.

No it's not personal. You are absolutely right. I just cannnot play in cinema scene. The input lag it generats is just too much. Game mode is mandatory. Also, cinemotion should be left off as adding additional frames to smooth the blur obviously also introduce input lag, a LOT.

I haven't played much so far on mine (The flashlighting is a bit more apparent in game mode so it annoys me) but I've started to experience in Game mode with Dynamic led set to standard to see if I can notice additional input lag or not.

Does anyone know if Sony uses different panel versions on the same line of tvs like Samsung does?
Anybody on here experience the green screen effect while using verizon dvr.................. every time the tv is off for a long period of time and then switch on i am getting a green screen. It is resolved by turning off the tv again and turning back on. Do you think i need to return it??

As an fyi, I was at the Sony Store yesterday and rep told me they have to send back any un-sold 850hx that they have in stock by end of this week. They were not given a reason as to why. The store that I was at still had 3 in stock.

weird, is there something wrong with this model? or is it just that they have to make room for the new model.

That does seem unusual especially since I've seen quite a few posts from folks still trying to find one. W900s still aren't due for a little while right?

Definitely sounds like you found a nice gem at a nice price. Since picture wise everything seems good, just be really careful trying to repair the scratch since it is at the bottom of the screen and doesn't affect viewing. Last thing you want us to accidentally make things worse especially once your return period expires.

Otherwise.... Congrats and enjoy a great tv! smile.gif

I just bought the 950 from Sony Store in KC area on Wed but I was going after the 850 due to the $1000 difference. They had five in stock (55") and three 46". They would not sell me the 55" and gave me a BS reason that they really don't have any 55" and it's only a computer error. Also, isn't the NX720 from 2011? They have 15 of those in stock as well as a healthy amount of EX645 and HX750 that are older than the 850. It's really weird that the 850 suddenly disappeared. Oh, well, I'm sure I got the better overall set but pissed that I had to spend $1000 more.

I am not sure when the W900s are due out.

Here in florida it's strange that it doesn't really seem that hard to find the 850hx in stock as I have also spotted them at other electronic stores here in the area.

About 3 weeks ago I did purchase a 950HX as well but as Justin Sullins mentioned I also had my heart set on buying the 850 first just to save on cost.

Wow yah the nx720 is from 2011. Almost as good as the hx850 2D wise. The 3d is bad on the nx720.

I don't experience any terrible lag on my set given that I only have the LED dynamic on standard, all other settings like cinemotion, motionflow, Reality creation, smooth gradiant, etc are Off. I have been playing games since the atari era, so basically 30+ years and I have had sony tvs since 1990, and in my experience lag has never been an issue with my LCDs (S2000, S3000, Z5100 and now the HX850) and I have always had them on standard, custom or cinema. I have played a lot of private matches in gears of wars and never once felt the game sluggish in any way, but I don´t know about far cry 3, I haven't played it yet.

I also like how my games look on my calibrated cinema setting (I used Disney WOW and Spears & Munsil calibration blu-rays), but in the end that's the good thing of having a tv with diferent scene options. If you finding it more fluid and lag free in Game Mode that's a good thing and fine by me, because we should play with the settings we like the best. Some people on this forum like to play with motionflow and DRC turn on for example.

Anyone have issues with the video cutting out for a split second on these TVs? It happens while watching cable, blu rays and gaming..m&m not sure how to trouble shoot it.. It could be my hdmi cable (slim sanus) my receiver (denon 3808) or the tv... Any suggestions? It happens once or twice every few hours.. There are no loose connections
post #1580 of 1924

are you using 1 hdmi cable to your TV for all your devices? or are using multiple hdmi ports on your tv. I had an old sony tv that had one bad hdmi port and the tv signal or whatever was connected to that one port would crack in and out.

It happens to my set too (flashes a black screen for about 1 second and comes back on), but not as often as yours...maybe 2 - 3 times in a week. Other than that, it's an awesome TV. I've had it for 3 months now.

What's your set up? Receiver hdmi bluray? Connections?

All my sources are connected directly to the TV. On HDMI 2, I have a Verizon FIOS DVR and on HDMI 3, I've got a WDTV SMP. I've seen it happen on both inputs.

I'm not sure what I should do. If its the tv I don't know what my options are. I purchased the tv in November from best buy

First narrow down what the issue is. Does the problem persist on all inputs or just one? Do you experience it when watching ota or internet content? The solution might be as simple as switching out a cable. If it's the 850, you're still under warranty if you purchased in November.

Today i took the receiver out of the equation will see if I can atleast rule that out
post #1588 of 1924
Was at the Sony store today (during lunch) and was told that all the 850 are being sent back to Sony and in turm they will send them to Sony Outlets within the US next month. The Sony store has already sent back their last 3 remaining of the 850 hx. This is good news and bad news depending how you look at it.

Good news is as follows:

If you live by a Sony Outlet you will be able to get this brand new for under 2000
Means the new model will be out within the next 30-60 days
Expect the price to dropp on the 850 on both new and used sets. (ebay)

Bad news would be:

If you had your hopes set on getting a new one it will be very difficult to find now. If it hasn't been alreeady.

Two things to note:

1) The 750 are also now discontinued!
2) Sony store in florida is getting a 4k tv in this week. Looking forward to seeing this in person.
