I would not worry about it

Your tv comes with a 1yr warranty so I would simple just call Sony Tech support and tell them of your issue. They will either fix, replace, or upgrade your tv. Sony also has 850hx in stock but they are not selling them so I would'nt worry about them not finding you a new 850hx if they have to.

As I mentioned in another post all Sony store's were required to send back there unsold 850 back to Corporate.

It's a gamble as the new models might be worse than the 850? I would just get it resolved now and ejoy your tv.

I agree. i have heard that the 2013 models dont even have gorilla glass. The 850 is a proven TV by many reviewers. Do your best to get the 850 as your replacement. I am praying that the w900a is at least the same quality. The lack of gorilla glass does bother me though. I guess they wanted to keep decreasing bezel size to catch people's eyes like samsung. I had the 850 for about a week and it was an amazing experience. Absolutely flawless. Unfortunately I had a dead pixel. If I had gotten a better deal on the floor model I would have kept it. Because I took it back to hh gregg I am uncomfortable going back there to look at other sets haha. Oh well.
Just talked to a sony sales associate on online chat. They did not flat out say there would be gorilla glass on the 2013 w900a models but implied that there would be an affordable tv in 2013 that would feature gorilla glass. They also said April would be the absolute latest on release.

Lol so wait or try and get a new one? Also how does it work do I have to ship to them or do they replace and take the old? Also I should make sure I get a brand new set and not a refeb correct?

I have HX950 that I'm not too keen on, mainly for bad PQ with Directv Content. It's not the signal as I have a lesser tv than the 950 (Samsung 46"D630) hooked up to the same signal and it's completely fine and even looks better. Anyway, I've found a 46" HX850 at a local store in KC and was wondering if anyone thought the 850 would suit me better with the issues I'm having with the 950.

Doubt it. I think older ccfl Lcds like ur Samsung look better with HD cable. So many shows are not even HD. Content will get better on HD cable though. I would keep the 950. Ur 950 is simply highlighting the downfalls of a compressed signal. Make sure all your enhancements are on for cable. Such as xreality. Also keep all noise reductions on Low. Off is bad and auto blurs picture. For blu ray having enhancements off is ok but not for compressed signals

Sorry have to disagree here. Off is not bad at all. Having any noise reduction on just adds blur. All it does is remove fine detail.

If you can i would just accept it's a poor source ie crap in crap out.

Hey guys

I already own a sony 55hx850 in my main room and am considering purchasing a 46hx850 for the spare room as the prices are cheap. But before i go ahead and make my purchase the new w802a that was displayed at this years CES does it lose the monolithic design, also does the TV still have gorilla glass. Finally is the new model very similar to last years model or has it lost some important features.

Any feedback would be a great help cheers

Hey Guys,

I finally have a good set!!

After returning a KDL50EX645 due to extreme light flashing and returning a samsung un50es6100 due to major light flashing and 6 dead pixels I decided to throw more money and get the Sony KDL55HX850...

Screen uniformity is near perfect with no light leaking anywhere. 1 have 1 half dead pixel... But it's not bothering me at all as I have to me 3-4 feet away to see it.

PQ has been amazing out of the box compared to the samsung. 3D is fantastic too.

Only problem I have with this TV that I did not had with the previous too are that HDMI 40ft redmere cables are not working. It flickers.

My receiver is located 40ft away from my TV.. I guess I will have to bring back the receiver close to the tv frown.gif

Congrats. Good find as they are very hard to come by in many areas nowadays.

Ordinarily I would be recommending to send it back if the pixel came dead out of the box, but due to the extremely limited stock.... enjoy the TV.

Thanks..

Well to be honest, I'm probably very picky when it comes to dead pixel because the other 2 sets also had dead pixels + other major issue to my eyes such as light leaking out of every corners and the samsung was leaking light everywhere..

So I think I can live with 1 half dead pixel. Like I said, it only shows on a red background and must be 3-4 feet away from the TV to see it. At 10 ft no chance in hell you can see it on a static background so imagine on moving images..

As I said, the uniformity of this set is near perfect so I guess i'll just stick with it!

Other possibility is going back to bestbuy and buy a second set and return the worst out of the two.. But is it worth all the trouble for a half dead pixel you don't even see from the couch? I don't know.. you tell me wink.gif

If BB has the stock and you don't mind going out of pocket on a second until you return one of them.... with me being just as picky as it sounds like you may be.... That's actually a great idea. Nothing to lose as I see it. Pick the best of the two, return the other then get refund.

I tried the Amazon Warehouse deals for a 55" after deciding the 46" was too small. Twice. The 1st set was "used very good" condition. All was good until i notice the top right corner starting to separate. So, I am returning it. A "like new" condition popped up that same day and i snagged it. It arrived today and was worse condition than the very good one. I think they must have mixed it up with another. The stand was all scratched and had a big dent in the back.

The 46" I have is great but am returning it too in hopes of the 55.

Sigh.

Sony was a month too early discontinuing these.

Hi fegam2,

I agree completley with your settings, out of interest what "other" settings do you use i.e brightness, contrast, colour etc.....

Hey Guys,

As you know, I bough this TV last weekend and i'm very very happy with it!

Only major issue is this..

My receiver and cable box are located 40ft away from my TV. I use 2 x HDMI 40 FT cables (with redmere) from monoprice.

This setup was working fine with my Sony KDL50EX645.

However, now on all 4 HDMI ports, if I enable 1080p on my blu-ray player, my screen flickers and goes on and off.

Do I have a faulty TV ? Or is it simply that my TV does not support cable with redmere ?

I will try to order a different 40ft HDMI cable to see if I can get it to work.. Has anyone here have the HX850 connected with a long HDMI cable ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Eco: Low-extremely important for really low black level and for eliminating those nasty flashlight effects

Scene select: Cinema
Backlight: Min
Picture: Max
Brightness: 51
Color: 50
Hue: G1
Color Temp: Warm 2
Sharpness: 25
All noise reduction and Reality creation: Off
Smooth Gradation: Off
Motionflow: Off
CineMotion: Auto 2

ADVANCED SETTINGS

Turn off all picture enhancement settings: Adv. Contrast, Clear White etc.
Gamma: -2
Led Dynamic Control: Standard
White Balance: R-Gain -4, G-Gain -3, B-Gain -2, R-Bias 0, G-Bias 0, B-Bias -1

Using CalMan and 21% apl window patterns, the results I got from these settings are astounding. The max brightness is only 97 nits, but the black level readings are around .003 nits. Average gamma of 2.4. That's a real time contrast ratio of 32,000. It smokes even the plasmas that I had. Enjoy peeps smile.gif

How much variation can I expect between sets? i.e. how much variation can happen in the manufacturing process? Using Chronitis settings seems to get me pretty bang-on, but using a THX blue filter and "basic settings #4 - flashing color bars", I need to use color 55 and Hue R1 to get get the best blending of the squars/bars. Can this be due to manufacturing / room lighting (room is relatively dark, but some daylight coming from behind), or is this just due to a blue filter not being as accurate as a light meter?

Thanks for any input.

There is enough variation in these sets to be noticed if you kept two sets side by side and compared, not otherwise.

At one point I had two HX850s at my home. I kept them side by side and fed them the same signal from the dual HDMI outputs from my AV Receiver. There was a noticeable green push to one of the sets. I had to go Green Gain -4 on that set to get the same skin tone on both. I tuned both sets using the AVS HD 709 Blu-ray disk and all other settings where pretty close to identical on both sets.
