I have not tested properly if there is a difference between both modes regarding input lag. I doubt there is a difference.

Thanks fegam2 for taking the time to write a detailed explanation.

I suspected that auto 2 did additional processing an auto 1 was the straight pulldown. I guess it doesn't really matter.

Should SBM be on or off? Does it matter either way?

Picked one up at Magnolia Audio Video on the 2nd. It was a return (whoever returned it just wanted something larger) so was on "sale" for an even 2k. LOVE IT. Reflection is only bad if the light/window is directly visible on the screen, and even then upping the brightness gets rid of it. This thing is gigantic, too. I sit 6-7 feet from it. At first I thought it might be too big but I'm getting used to it. I was at a movie theater recently sitting in the middle where I usually sit and holding my hand up to gauge how much of my field of vision was taken up by the screen 55 is actually just right.

I only have Antenna TV piping through it now and the on-board apps. (By the way...anyone know if this thing has a Vudu app? Seems weird that I haven't seen on yet...) Blu-ray player is on its way. I'm a little disappointed in local streaming (I have a 7 gig 1080p mkv but DLNA via Plex is about a frame a minute). If I can't get that going I'll have to see if the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 does any better. It sounds like Roku is pretty crap at large local content as well. Might have to end up grabbing a Boxee Box or finding some piece of hardware to throw XBMC on.

Another thing...Audio Return Channel (ARC) via the HDMI wasn't fully working at first. The TV remote would control the volume on my receiver but no audio would actually output. Bought an HDMI 1.4 "high bandwidth" cable and now everything works great.

Brightness is crazy though...0 destroys the PQ so I'm sitting at 1 right now but damn...can't believe anyone can stand anything higher. Rocking Cnet's calibration right now until I can devote some more time to searching this thread to try out some others.

I just check the i-manual and is correct Auto 1 is the one that makes the aditional processing. I have a 3 years old sony Z5100 and on it its like you said. Anyhow, I was doing some testing yerterday with some video games with Auto1 and 2, and found that with auto 2 the fluidity of the picture is so much better than with auto 1 (I had been using auto 1 since I bought the tv). I have read also in some reviews that if you use motionflow is better to use it with auto 1, but because I don't use it with games for now on I'll stick with auto 2.

SBM does matter, you should leave it to OFF, because if you turn it on it will change your color palette completly and sadly to the worse. I have been a fan of sony LCD's for some years now ( I had had 4 set including the HX850) but there's one thing that I still don't buy about sony PR: "the enhance color scheme of their tvs". The z5100 and the hx850 have on their advance picture settings the "live color" setting that sony likes to brag about and the only real use it has is for turn it off. SBM is the same thing, it is useless. Is for this reason that I am skeptical about the "Triluminous display" of the new w900 and hopefully maybe sony will get it right this time

Thanks Guibs I gave it a try yesterday with killzone and I also like game-standard the best. Have you tried movies on this setting?

That being the case, would you suggest Auto 2 with watching movies? And what is meant by straight "pulldown"?

Thanks

I've just upgraded from the 46HX850 to the 55HX850 upon lodging an insurance claim after the ceiling in the top story of my apartment collapsed on top of my home theatre setup. I've also used the money to buy a Yamaha 5.1 surround sound system and a MacMini to use as a media centre.

The 55HX850 is still widely available in Australia (although the retailer I purchased it from mentioned they were extremely popular, and had 15 on back order). I got a great one with a very uniform picture with no flash lighting. I've run a few tests and whereas I had flashlighting on the bottom corners of my 46HX850 which was particularly noticeable in letterbox pictures, this is completely absent on my 55HX850.

I know there were some calibration settings somewhere in this thread. I'll have to track to down to get the best picture. Fantastic television though.

I am mostly gaming with my xbox but also on my PS3. for Movies, I prefer to switch to cinema Scene (using Cinema 1 setting). Backlit of 2, color to Warm1, dynamic led to Standard, Cinemotion to auto2, motionflow to standard. Don't recall if I've played around with the colors, brightness, etc. That's what I run with for movies and I think it looks great.

The only adjustment I made on my TV on all most was to set BlueBiais to -2 as it was making some of the black have a bluish push. Setting that to -2 solve the issue.

Thanks

Straight means that the tv only does the 3:2 pulldown without any other aditional process from the tv. If I'm not wrong this process only applies to 1080i, 720p and 480i/p sources, converting the 24 frames per second to 30 frames that the tv displays, creating some new frames in the process. Thats the 3:2 pulldown. The addional processing that the tv does in auto 1 is for making the image more fluid, but to me that process makes the image a litlle less detail (on my Z5100 I kept it on Auto 1 but in that case thas was the one with the straight 3:2 pulldown). For 1080p movies (blu-ray) the process is not use because your blu-ray player or ps3 (given you active the option of course) will send a 24p feed to the tv and the HX850 will display the image as it has been send: 1080p/24 (you can check it out hitting the display button on the remote control). So yes, for movies I will let it in auto 2. If you enable the 3d option on your bluray player or ps3 the display will read 1080p/24 12-bit so don´t worry about that.

Good to know. I hope to make my tv calibration in the coming week, when I do I'll report my settings on the forum.

Finally purchased a 46 inch HX850 and I'm wondering if anyone has a list of things I should look at in terms of defects and the likes (with reference pictures or descriptions if possible). I can see some slight flashlighting in one of the corners on the TV, but I'm not sure if it is within the tolerance levels or above it.

(and if anyone has some calibration settings they believe are those that bring the best out of the tv, let me know I've been stumbling around the settings for two hours without anything I'm really satisfied with)

In case anyone want to see, I took some pictures with my iPad (sorry in advance for the poor low light quality of the pics) of my hx850 with antec HDTV biais lighting.

It looks like you use two strips?. I have seen the antec bias lighting in amazon, wich one you used, the one that is $6 or the $23. Amazon also has the LED Backlight Kit for 46" to 57" TV LCD Flatscreen from Inspired that look nice. what´s you opinion of the bias lighting, it really makes deeper the blacks and color?. One last question Guibs: does the Antec package or manual says if the led lights temperature are 6500k or the CRI (80 OR 82 OR 92).

This is what I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Antec-HDTV-51-1-Inch-BIAS-LIGHTING/dp/B007TG5EG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1361897721&sr=8-1&keywords=antec+bias+lighting

I'm only using one. The strip is pretty long, right now I do not have mine glued to the TV. I have a support for an HDTV in the back that you don'T see but I am not using it since I like the look with the stand and I can get the TV to be a little bit closer to me (about 1 foot closer).

I have the LED Biais lighting "attached" to the TV support. Since it's too long (I have a 46" TV after all), I have the strip to fold and go down along the side of the TV stand. I do not know why the light make it look like I have to sets (specifically the upper middle part of the TV). When actually watching, it's not as noticeable than it is on the picture so it doesn't botter me. Maybe if I was to place it differently I'd have different result. I'll try to remember and take a picture of how I'm attaching it tonight to give you an idea.

What I really like about this kit is that it's powered by USB. I just connect it to my TV and it automatically power on and off with the TV. It usually take a few seconds for the light to power on once the TV is on (which is expected, since sony open the TV first before loading the OS of the TV, I'm guessing the USB port only get activated once the OS is loaded). Sames goes when I close the TV, the LED stays on for a few more seconds, which I kind of like actually.

Not disapointed with the purcahase and it was cheap enough. I paid a little more since I live in Canada but still, with shipping and taxes, it was around 40$.

Interesting, I really like the look of the tv with the antec lights. Do you use them for gaming too or just for movies and cable?. Do you know if the LED lights temperature is 6500K?

They advertise these as being 6500K but I personally doubt it and I've read comments on the internet that they are not 6500k. I personally don't really mind myself.

I use them all the time. Even during the day (although it's not bright enough so I don't even notice if they are on or not). I guess I am just too lazy to unplug them. Since they are LED, their lifetime is pretty high I'm not overly concern about some led burning out. Even if it happens, they were cheap enough that I'd probably just buy another kit.

Basically, they go on everytime I use my TV. I think the look is good enough that I like it with all content, make it TV, movies or videogames. I'm going back to play more on my consoles since I got this new TV (Stopped a while ago because It was just too damn small on a 32" at the same distance that I stopped gaming on console and concentrated on my PC). So I got back into Batman Arkham City and the game looks amazing on that TV.

Here is a pic of how I have setup the LEDs. Going straight and then falling on the sides (didn't want to cut it in case I need to use it elsewhere later or change my setup.

Looks good Guibs. I have my tv mounted and what I am gonna do is wrap the lights around that and not on the tv itself. Thanks for the idea and again looks good! smile.gif

So there's an update to the iOS Youtube app. It mentioned a Youtube TV feature. Going through the instructions, I simply don't find the 'Settings' option in the Youtube feature of the HX850. Anybody got Youtube TV to work? Or is it not supported by the HX850? Thanks!

I'm forever adjusting between scenes. I've got a TV setting, a movie setting, a PC setting, and a Gaming setting.

Is there a quicker way to adjust between these than going through the Home>Settings>Scene Select?

I want to know as well. I have everything going to an A/V receiver first then one HDMI cable out to the TV. Even with a Harmony one remote, I have not found an easy way to switch between scene types or to adjust picture settins without having to go through all the menus.

If your remote is like the 950s just hit options on the remote

I used to do that but then changed it so I have separate HDMI feeds to the TV and only the Blu Ray going thru the receiver so I can get the True HD sound that Blu Ray offers. All the other inputs are direct to the TV's HDMI inputs with just the sound going to the receiver via optical cable. That way I can adjust each TV input to the way I like. I have macros on my remote built to switch everything at the same time when changing inputs.

Hit option on the remote, it brings up a menu to the right, scene selection is there.

For those that lives by a Sony Outlet can pickup a new 850hx for 1799.

Not a bad price for those still in the market for this tv.

I just recently picked up an HX850, and it's a gorgeous picture, but I'm having trouble getting sound to my external speakers when I just want to use the TV. And I do have it set to use external speakers in the options menu, too.

I tried running an optical cable from the TV to the receiver and configuring the receiver to use that input, but that didn't work. The only thing I haven't tried yet is running an HDMI cable from the TV to a free HDMI input on the receiver. I was just hoping I could use one cable from the TV to the receiver instead of two, though.

Hey guys

I am buying my second 55" hx850 tomorrow for my spare room, which will replace my lg lx9500, that suffered a liquid crystal bleed. I have had my first 55 inch hx850 for about 5 months now and love it on my ps3. Just a quick question is the new model opting out local dimming, also is the design of the hx850 successor monolithic.

Looking forward to tommorow will be setting the TV on a wii u and buying a blu ray player.

The guts and features of the HX850 successor, the W900A, are largely the same. The differences are the bezel and the stand, the lack of gorilla glass on the W900A, and Triluminos. The 2013 model uses a new screen type that brings out colors, specifically red, more. It looks nice, but as my HX850 is already a gorgeous image, I don't know if I want to spend up to 1,000 more for more pronounced reds.
