Ibissa, tha's correct and you must do it. My blu-ray is a PS3 and the SONY scaling chip is excelent. It will never be like watching a blu-ray but 1080p scaled dvds look pretty good, some better that others, for example my star wars revenge of the sith DVD looks damn good. I don't know what brand of blu-ray you have but I know for experience that Sony, Samsumg and Panasonic are all very good for this task. A litlle tip, when you set the blu-ray to scale the dvd to 1080p, there are some players that requiere to set also how you want to make the upscale (normal, doble, etc). This is the case if you have a ps3. So set the resolution for 1080p and the upscale to normal (both options in video settings). Also remember that you don´t need to have a blu-ray player to upscale, a lot of DVD players have this ability too, so checked if yours has it, but it is best to let the blu-ray player do the upcale because they have better upscale chips (again Sony and Samsung have the best upscale IMO). My brother has an extensive DVD collection but he only has upgraded to blu-ray those dvds that deserves it, a lot of them he´s happy watching them upscale throug the PS3. I guess that when you watch a dvd upscale to 1080p you'll be completly happy with the image, but also remember the'll never be as good as a blu-ray PQ.
