Thanks, that sounds perhaps promising.

What about if you turn off the local dimming? Is the black level still ok and the edges don't light up? Or do you need to have local dimming turned on?

ummm to be honest i dont really notice a difference. i do however notice a difference with banding if i do. i really like this tv due to the minimal amount of dse/banding i have been experiencing. however, both my sets have had a stuck pixel that i cannot live with it. so hopefully third time is the charm

My PS3, Xbox and cable box are all connected via HDMI to a sony home theater tuner. The tuner is then connected via HDMI to the TV.

This is the setup I have no at home with my XBR4 and the settings I have on that I am happy with for blurays, tv, gaming, etc.

Now I'm hoping to find some advice on settings for my forth coming 55HX850 using the same setup as above.

This is what I would recommend.

Use game scene select for xbox and ps3 through the tuner.

Connect the cable directly to tv and use optical out to route the voice to the tuner

This will allow you to have a separate setting for your cable and that is needed so that you can turn on reality Creation etc.

Question for experienced buyers: I'd like to buy the HX850 but I don't want to pay more than $1500. Right now it's at $1800 on Amazon but will it get lower after BF? How far into next year will they still be available at major sellers?

I think it is very unlikely that the Sony UPP will support a price of less than or even close to $1500 (from an authorized reseller) unless Sony decides to allow a fire sale of their entire line-up. And buying from an unauthorized reseller is an extremely risky proposition.

However, you can actually get the 55HX850 today at Amazon for $1460.35 shipped if you're willing to accept one of the "used" sets offered through Amazon Warehouse Deals. These sets are often practically new and you can always return yours within 30 days if there is some unacceptable defect. There's a good chance that the Sony 1-year limited warranty would not apply, but you can always purchase a third-party warranty, such as the one offered by Square Trade on Amazon for about $45. If anyone here has purchased their set through Amazon Warehouse Deals perhaps they can provide some feedback on their experience.

How long this particular set will be available is unknowable; it depends on how long Sony decides to keep production going and how well they sell. But once next year's line-up hits the market you can expect the superseded 2012 sets to become ever harder to find.

Yes it support 4:4:4 in Game, Graphics Scene mode.
Yes you can disable all feauters like Dynamic control LED responsible for local dimming, and you can also turn off all picture improvers. Black level in a dim room with DCL on on is really impresive for Edge LED, almost as good as in HX920, but with a lot of less blooming/halo effect.
MotionFlow work great reducing judder on 24p movies, and keep natural move on movie with no "theatre" effect. I recomended MF on Standard with Movie mode on Auto.1

Just helped my brother buy one of these last night. I was impressed with the contrast and color reproduction on this unit compared to my Kuro6020.

I was thinking of buying him some accessories as a Christmas gift. Can anyone recommend which slim line wall mount and 3D glasses to pick up? Monoprice or other ID or BM that us Canadian's would have access to purchase.

So barring any cyber Monday deals, do you guys think the 850 will stay at $1800? Also does the 850 justify the $450.00 price difference between the 750? I'm going to be mainly using this set for console/pc gaming/streaming tv and movies from my pc with that in mind would I be better off with a 750?

The HX750 represents excellent bang for the buck IMO and if you are not a demanding videophile it should satisfy most of your needs, but the HX850 is definitely a step up. Which set is best for you depends on a number of subjective factors. Off the top of my head, the biggest advantages of the HX850 are:

1) X-Reality Pro video processor (vs. X-Reality in the HX750). This is the most important factor for me as it should result in an improved overall PQ.

2) "Dynamic Edge LED backlighting with local dimming" (vs. Dynamic Edge with "frame dimming").

3) Motionflow XR 960 (vs. XR 480)

4) OptiContrast Panel

5) Gorilla Glass and "monolithic styling"

I'm just going by my understanding of Sony's marketing specs, which some people may not trust entirely.

I have watched both sets (although not side by side) and, while I most definitely feel the HX850 is a superior TV, I still think the HX750 is a good alternative for most folks.

They sell them in their Magnolia showrooms. Not every B&M Best Buy has a Magnolia section.

Anyone here own both the 55HX850 and the 55HX820 (either currently or at some time or another)? If so, how do the two compare in picture quality? I really like the styling of the HX820 a lot and would like to get one if it isn't sacrificing too much in picture quality.

Yes, picture quality is more or less the same. 850 has less light dimming fluctuations, but only visible in areas of hard contrast (ie movie credits w small vignettes in frame). 850 is improvement, but still not "plasma good"

@Needanewbewbtube - The cheapest I've seen the 55" was $1699. I think it was for Columbus day.
Your best bet is to watch Google Shopping, especially their listings for sites like East Coast TV and PowersellerNYC.

Their pricing suggests they are probably not official Sony dealers (and I wouldn't buy from them), Best Buy is allowed to price match them.
When they hit that low it was $300-400 less than BB. It's worth looking out for, especially this Monday.

I am also looking at buying a Sony 55HX850 now but wondering if they will drop there price or at least offer a free soundbar with a purchase. I noticed the Samsung UN55ES7100 was at the same price point as the Sony HX850 but they lowered their price to about 1,600.00.

Hoping they will lowere this tv again for cyber monday or at least throw in something extra.

i need help but dont know if you guys have seen 929 3d. i had a 929 for a month but returned because i thought 850 was a better value. i dont see much of a diff in p/q other than deeper blacks to justify the price diff. HOWEVER i love 3d and i'm not getting the depth or pop that the 929 had while watching 3d. i heard that the 850 has better 3d which maybe true if were talking about the crosstalk but i just dont see much depth or pop like the 929 had. should i do something with the settings or does the full array backlight of the 929 give it more depth and pop? does anyone know the diff in the 3d 850vs929..i want to love this tv and keep it but i watch too much 3d to not have a great picture. any info or something i need to do settings wise to get the depth that the 929 had..thanks guys
