You should be fine. Sorry to scare you. But if there are cosmetic flaws then thats def a reason to replace. Im questioning my amazon purchase at this point. Might go with sears that way i can pack it up and bring it back if thers an issue. But amazons tax free purchase would be nice

Just got my 55HX850. Read through the first 15 or so pages of this thread and decided to post. Couple questions. The stand installation manual says that it can swivel 15 degrees and tilt back 6 degrees. I keep trying to tilt it back but it wont do it and I fear I'm putting far to much tourque on the screen pushing back from the top middle like the instructions example. Anybody actually able to tilt their tv back with the stand it came with? I don't think it really does, unless I missed something. Also it's rather ridiculous that you can't adjust picture settings with the netflix app...any fix?

Not sure about the stand as my set is wall mounted.

As for netflix, watch a YouTube video and watch a video full screen, change your picture settings while watching the video. Settings for all the apps are universal so one affects all.

Its the netflix app that's at fault here.

DId anyone else experience this? Is it safe to update? What does the update provide?

I had tried tilting mine but it too did not want to. however back tilting to me would be worthless,
I would rather have it forward tilt to keep dust from landing on it. a wall mount coming soon....

not into netflix yet.

also my set did the update just fine. remember it may be slow to reboot as it installs the new files
after it is downloaded.

just a note sears has had them listed on their outlet store at a discount.
but read carefully as I believe they are so called reconditioned. I do not know if it is worth it
and reason why I went to the sony site for new new......
just noted store delivery available and 4 available....

Thanks everyone for the response on the Netflix picture adjustments. I will have to try that out. Annoying but workable. On the tilt subject I wanted to tilt it back since it is sitting on a very low media stand and is going to be used as a client monitor for color grading. Didn't want to have to lower everyones seat every time a client comes by to get the screen at eye-line for best black performance. Here is a odd, OCD concern of mine. The manual said to hold the base and push back at the top middle of the screen to tilt. I did this until the stand started lifting itself up....no dice on the tilt. Do you think the torque and bending pressure of pushing like that could bow or bend the screen? All that weight and height above the low stand contact point. I ask because looking at the screen from my desk off to the side it appears to have a slight bow to the frame and glass on the lower portion of the screen. Now this may be an optical illusion of the glass reflections since it appears straight at other angles and lighting conditions. Ah the woes of an OCD mind . Also can that type of pressure on the top mid frame of the screen cause a vertical band? Have yet to mess with the picture much or any actual video source to the screen but noticed a vertical darker area right in the middle of the screen. Thanks again.

Hello im new here and stumbled upon the forums trying to find some info to help with my new tv purchase.

First i currently have a Panasonic TC-P42ST30 plasma television and its absolutly beautifull and i love it ... at my old house, but in august we moved to a new house and the livingroom is a big open area with LOTS of windows in every direction wich we love because of the wonderfull view with us on the very top of the hill. but the downside is that all those windows with the ones in the living room going 25 feet high it totally destroys ANY tv viewing untill late at night when looking for a tv that was low on glare and high on quality i was told to look at the larger Sharp LED's, the LG led's and the Sony Bravia hx850 and Hx750. can tv's like hx850 be viewed in my kind of situation or would you recomend another? how much of a difference does the anti reflective coat on the higher end LED's make? or am i stuck with one of the few remaining LED's with a matte display?

next the only sport i watch is baseball, the olympics otherwise i watch action movies like the avengers/batman/xmen and my wife watches tv drama's and romcoms with my type of viewing (no gaming i do that on my gaming pc) with the higher motion flow rating on the hx850 make as much of a difference as on the hx750? thanks for any help or advice you may have for me!

No problems for me since that post and I haven't seen any other mention of it here. As to what the update provided, I've noticed no difference in functionality.

I also thought about ordering directly from sony. Im not sure any of my local brick and mortars have this tv on hand. Hh gregg has it on display but would have to order... They weird me out too...

Hi Covfam.

I currently have an older 'matte' sony XBR and (now being exhanged) had a HX850. In my room where I have windows on one side and 2 side lamps, the gorilla screen worked out ok. The screen is reflective to some extent, but it does a reasonable job on the reflections, you can see clear reflections but they are darker and less disruptive than you see with most glossy glass LEDs. If you have LOTS of windows and light (and it is an issue with your current plasma), it might be somewhat of an issue, of course, some people take more notice than others.

I persoanlly prefer the matte screens liek you do, unfortunately, they (and/or 'we') are a dying breed. (All for the sake of slim and slick I guess).

I too have 3 windows directly opposite my HX850. However I keep the blinds closed. I can see the window reflections when the TV is off, but when I turn TV on, the screen is bright enough, the reflections do not bother me, I notice them only on dark scenes. But then again, you seldom watch such content during day time.

i wish i could use blinds but unfortunately my windows are 25 feet high in a triangular shape in my living room, so i need to find a lower reflection/glare option than my current panasonic st 30 Plasma tv with is beautifull but during the day its just a mirror! , thanks for the suggestions, ill see if i can find a show room to compare the HX850 and the HX750 see wich one does better for handeling the light.

I purchased the Sony 250 glasses (newer version, $49 retail) and have been seeing very bad crosstalk/ghosting -especially when playing PS3 games. I tried playing with the 3D (alignment?) setting that ranges from -2 to +2 and could improve a bit, but not much. I'm wondering how much of this issue is native to the set vs. the glasses... The 250s have not been very comfortable to wear over my (small) glasses, and they also have much back glare/reflection, even when watching in a dark room. I'll give the PS3 version a try as well, but overall I am disappointed with the 850's 3D picture so far. Can anyone recommend settings for gaming in 3D and watching movies in 3D?

I'm somewhat regretting returning my Panasonic GT50, which had great 3D and glasses and also did not have my 850's light bleed / flashlighting issues-- but the GT50 did buzz annoyingly...

Looks like Best Buy has these in stock again. I just ordered a 55HX850 for in-store pickup on Sunday. I also got a pair of the $30 Playstation 3D glasses since people seem to think they are decent (and I will only be using 3D very occasionally). I currently have a Panasonic 55ET5 that I got from them via their Black Friday sale but it just has horrible flashlighting, DSE, and screen uniformity issues. I'm willing to pay more for the Sony if it is better at this point, as I'm sick of looking for a TV. I realize the HX850 won't be perfect, but it would have to be pretty bad to not beat the Panny's problems. I just hope the input lag is as good as the Panasonic, which I don't find noticible.

I went through 2 Panny plasmas earlier this year and both buzzed horribly on bright content. The display models in the store did too. People say they don't all buzz but how many would I have to go through to get a non-buzzing set?

can anyone comment on the viewing angle? most reviews say its pretty good for an LCD.

I went through 3 of them (2 ST50s and 1 GT50). Call me skeptical about the fans who claim no buzz on their units.... a shame given the great PQ of the set (albeit a bit soft on cable tv source)

I find the colors/contrast to be quite good at 30 degrees. Beyond that I notice the contrast beginning to drop gradually. But if I go beyond 30 degrees I am usually doing something else in the room while I am monitoring what is going on TV. So at that point I am not really that particular about a perfect picture. Of course this is all very subjective.

30 degrees is pretty good considering the many other positives. My samsung viewing angle is like 10 degrees i feel. And contrast doesnt just diminish, the colors turn strawberry milky. Hoping the 55hx850 drops to at least 1800 before i pull the trigger.

new to the forum and after a bit of help.

I recently purchased the Sony KDL55HX850, great looking TV and very happy with it, the only problem is that when plugging in external hard-drives, a) it won't even recognize the device (Western Digital external), or b) it will recognize the device (Samsung drive), but then wont recognize/play any of the files.

Basically I just want to play .avi .mp4 (movie) files etc from my external drives, like I have no problem doing on my Samsung TV.

Is there a patch or firmware update to address this issue? or am I the only one having it..

Have you tried playing these from an usb/flash drive?

If it still doesn't recognize, Sony doesn't like the encoding format. Sony is very picky on what it can play, Samsung's play more formats.

No I haven't. I can give it a try, but this isn't good if I simply just can't plug and play like my Samsung (that basically recognizes any format..)

Why are Sony so "picky" about what they will recognize and play? I'm talking standard .avi files and mainstream branded drives here..!

Furthermore, it actually recognized the Samsung drive earlier on and played a show off that OK, but after I added some more files to the drive, it no longer played any files.

I heard something about sony not playing .avi. How about mkv or mpg?

I can only get vivid, custom and standard picture modes on my hx850. Does anyone know how I can get the game mode etc. to show up?

Just recently bought an HX-850 (55) and was watching bluray movies fine until a few days ago. For some reason the top and bottom of the screen emerged a very thin line running across the screen left to right (about a millimetre or less) and i can't get rid of it. At first I thought it was the Oppo BD-83 or my Onkyo TX-NR5007 and I started changing resolutions but nothing. I changed the same on the HX-850 and same thing. Then, I decided to get my Panny bluray and go direct HDMI out into the HX-850 side input and I got the SAME thing. Now, that tells me it has to be the Sony that's doing this. By the way - when I switch over to the cable box all my HD channels are perfect...no issues...Only when watching bluray - black bars or full screen - the lines are still there...

Does anyone have any clue before I decide to swap it out...?
