Upgrading my Yamaha V667, I have a couple questions

I'm looking to upgrade my my Yamaha V667 that I bought last year. I just upgraded my speakers and sub so I thought I was all set, but now would like Audessy, set up sub properly, and to be able to eq it which I can't with my V667.

My speakers are BIC Acoustech
PL89 towers 8 ohm, 10-250 watts, 98db sensitivity
PL28 center 8 ohm, 10-225 watts, 98db sensitivity
PL66 rears 8 ohm, 10-175 watts, 96db sensitivity
HSU VTF15H sub qty 1 (but may get another down the road sometime, waaaay down the road, so we'll plan for the 1 sub. Maybe a pair of another brand though?)

YPAO is terrible for the subs and this V667 only lets me set the crossover frequency and the distance, will not let me EQ it. It seems to do a good job on the speakers, but now I've got the upgrade bug

3 main reasons for upgrading is for the Network, Audessy, and sub eq. Plus a few other minors like air play, usb direct iPhone hook up. I currently only have a 5.1, may get another pair of the PL66 for a 7.1 later. I think the Denon 3312 will be plenty for me, was looking at the 2312, but think I'll be happier with the 3312. May hook up a zone B later so I think that's all I'll need. I've done a lot of searches over the last couple months and think the denon 3312 is my best option considering what I'm after, was just hoping for verification to set me at ease on my decision.

What about places to buy and the best price? Any problems with buying a refurbished to save some cash? Also what dealers? I've been looking at refurbs at Ecost, accessories4less, or open box from Electronics Expo or JNR. Just curious if I should stay away from any of the mentioned or any reccomendations? Also are the extended warrantys from these different dealers all decent?

Thank you!

cdub563: currently thinking about the same, upgrading my RX-V667 to Denon 3312, for different purposes but with similar expectation, hope to get better audio result so every recomendation is welcome

There's very little that separates the 2312 and 3312. I got the latter and basically reason was not the couple extra watts, but rather the ability to send Optical audio to Zone 2 &3. If you don't have very specific need for the couple extra features Id save money and get 2312, which is better value.

Note that if you get 3312 for preout option "for later", it's pretty likely that if you decide in 2-3 years to add an amp then the room correction on board will probably be outdated as receivers continue to get more processing power. So be careful of that pre-out trap. Buy what you need for now.

Otherwise am happy with 3312 for now. Works as advertised. main weakness is awful manual/setup and lousy remote relative to the functionality of the receiver. But sounds good to me so far in norm usage.

Buying a receiver like the 3312 to use with your current speakers is like putting a set of $3000 tires on a 20-year old Honda Civic. Audessy doesn't have anything that can make those speakers sound better than they are.

The money would be far better spent on some good-sounding speakers from KEF, PSB, or Monitor Audio.

commsysman: I got oposit problem, need amp which can feed my Dynavoice DF6 (similar to MA-RX6) with decent stereo quality to enjoy performance of these speakers, the rest of course for movies in 5.1 channel, I know I can't beat stereo amp but at least be closer to it and under 1000 Eur, in this price range I can choose here in CZ - 3312, SR6006, NR809 or RX-A810 which is too neutral to my taste...have been looking into it for several weeks and so far looks denon as best choice unless there is something else with better quality in this price range, due to fact I have no room for additional device I can't buy separated amp just for stereo for now but looking for receiver with pre-out and remote control/trigger for future expansion...

Yeah, I was buying the 3312 mainly over the 2312 for the preouts for expansion later. I was thinking along the lines of what you're saying and that's a good point, I may just save the money. I don't really need the extra power as my current system with 90W channel is plenty loud enough for me and my 20 year old Honda Civic at around 12' and with the speaker sensitivity. I just want to be able to eq my sub and have audessy set it up sub properly.

So your suggestion is to get rid of the brand new speakers I JUST upgraded to and get diferent ones even though I am happy with the sound of them for now? Not sure the $600 will get me very far with expensive speakers? I hardly think this is the same as your little car metaphor you've used to describe when other people ask about recievers (as well as me) The 3312 refurb is around $530 - $630. Tires aren't going to get me air play, network, audessy to set up my sub for me (which YPAO does terrible), ability to eq my sub etc. I'm looking at the 2312 now, and will peek at the 2112 as I would like the multi EQ XT. So is my sub a 20 year old honda civic also? Do I need to ditch my brand new HSU15H as well?

Thanks again.

I have to disagree with commy. You have a crappy room and you place good speakers in em than they will sound crappy. At least audyssey can help you eq them in a bad room. For me I have a crappy room. My at 450s sounded eh in em but after audyssey(when run correctly) they sounded a whole lot better.

Yeah I have a pretty screwy room right now. 3/4 wall down to 1/2 wall, opens up to kitchen, vaulted ceiling sloping 2 different ways, open to long hallway, couch against back wall. I'm actually moving in a couple months to another location which has it worse there (seating has to be 1/2 to 3/4 way back about 8' from wall behind seating position, basically center of room :-( ). Side completely opens up to the large kitchen, definitely will be interesting. Utill I find another place and no idea what that will hold. YPAO did a pretty good job on my speakers AFAIK and no real complaints. It's just the ability to run the sub properly and EQ that I'm lacking, plus the extra features my current v667 does not have that I want.
