Energy, KEF, Mirage OH MY!!.....which one??

I am looking at getting a set of new tower seakers for a dedicated HT. Space is small (12" 14") but it is not 'forever'.

Speakers I am looking at are:

KEF iQ90, Q700, Q900
Mirage OMD15
Energy RC70

The problem I have is that I live in Maine and there are VERY FEW places to demo speakers....like really no places.

System will be for 50% music 50% movies.

I like a detailed sound....some may call it bright but that's because some are used to a mid-bass boost that a lot of speaker manufactors do. I would eventually get the matching center but the mains are most important to me right now.

If anybody has compared any of these speakers let me know!

Thanks!

My experience with the RC-10s and RC-50s is that they do have some of that mid-bass boost. Also, the RC line is often described as "laid back." So while they are often recommended for music, sounds like the RCs might not be what you are looking for.

Those 3 speakers lines don't sound anything alike. If you want something considered bright and detailed skip the RC-70.

The KEFs may be your thing because they are definitely detailed speakers. Mids and highs are very clear on the KEF. Its been awhile since I listened to the iQ towers but I did listen to some iQ30's earlier this week.

I have Energy RC bookshelf and center speakers and they would be considered warm and laid back, not bright.

The Mirage is an omnipolar speaker where the sound is dispersed throughout the room. Only heard a couple of those but not the OMD-15. Beautful looking speaker though.

I think the KEFs are your best bet based on what you're looking for.

After searching for speakers for months, I picked up the iQ90's and love them. Check the KEF thread for more info. Some folks like the iQ series better than the new Q's because of the mid's and high's.

I can not comment on the RC-70's, but I know they have a great following here.

Good luck.

I would go with the Kef's hands down. As stated very clean/clear and most importantly FLAT midrange(most critical aspect of a speakers performance) response. The new Q Kef speakers are very nice and can be had for reasonable money too at a few places like accessories4less.com

Sounds like KEF is the way to go! What's the matching center for either the iQ90 or the Q900??

For the Q900 - the Q600 or Q200 center

For IQ series - the IQ60C

If you want clarity and detail, I certainly wouldn't rule out paradigm.

Curious though, are we stuck on towers for a reason? You can get a much better bang for the buck going with monitors and dual subs.............tower speakers just impose too many natural restrictions/drawbacks compared to good quality monitors/subs in combo, for music or movies.....

For the iQ60C, I would contact KEF direct and find out when more stock is coming. I got mine last month for $299 from them.

That would be a good deal, if one chooses the IQ series system.
