Budget Speaker Advice

Hey everyone! Great forums. Finally out of my dorm and have some space to buy speakers.

Absolute max budget of $500 for both, but lower would be better. Will be used 90% for music (acoustic, voice, jazz) and 10% for movies. Not sure whether or not floor speakers would be better.

I'd say the room is about 30x30 feet. Here's the problem though. Everything is wood. The floor is wood, the cielings are wood, the walls are wood, etc.

This might sound silly. But. A speaker that is metal (and not black) would be great.

Another question/problem. This will be a stereo setup (possibly 2.1 later). I have a SONY STR-DG800 lying around that I'd like to use. I'm not sure if it can fit the bill.

I appreciate any help/advice!

Those Arx speakers look nice.

A couple of others that might be worth considering are...

You may want to look into these as well (... they can be had around the $400 mark as well). Excellent speaker as the SQ is well worth it! I noticed you had listed Jazz & such... excellet with that.

Worth looking into!

As far as "metal" goes that may be a VERY hard thing to find! Its hard to say but I dont think the wood area will be that much of an issue thou.

In theory, the higher the sensitivity rating, the more volume output for the same amplifier wattage. (Of course, speaker manufacturers sometimes hedge on specifications.) When it comes to amps and receivers, you have to double the wattage to get 3db more volume output (e.g., go from a 75 watt amp to 150 watt to get 3db more). So speaker sensitivity can make a significant difference.

For the same reason, the BIC PL-89's could also be good because of their 98db sensitivity rating (that's really high!). Here's the BIC owners thread if you want to learn more about them. Even though they are listed over $500, Acoustic Sound Design allows you to make them an offer; I would bet you could get them for around $500.

Thanks so much for all of the responses!

I suppose it was a bit unrealistic of me to expect to find metal (aluminum or chrome) speakers that deliver good sound. I can only assume the acoustical qualities of wood are much superior.

Well. As of writing this I was browsing NewEgg and saw Martin Logan Motion 10 floorstanding speakers for $199 each + an $80 coupon. So, total was $240 including free shipping. I snagged them.

Probably should have waited first, but. I can see these selling out.

My second question. Will my amp be fine for these?

Thanks!

Good deal on some solid speakers. Your receiver will do as well as any cheap receiver you can afford with the remaining budget, so no need to waste money there. The biggest thing you can do to enhance your speakers is add a sub.
