Agree, have watched inventory levels across a variety of sources for a four/five months now, even before the "657" possibility became known, and it's clear that Sharp scaled production to meet demand almost perfectly with this set at some point previously, because there hasn't ever been much excess inventory anywhere during that span.
It makes sense of course, because after a full year of sales and data as a mfg you should know exactly how many units you can move during whatever span and throttle production to line up with that data. So no "blowout" 90" 745s at its end-of-life unfortunately.
But at least the 657 will start the game at a much lower $7999 MSRP, which should see street prices fall below $6k pretty quickly. Maybe even near $5k from first tier/big-box price-matching retailers by Xmas. Just in time for Xbox One and PS4...
