I think you've described pretty much how local dimming works with any edge lit LED display. You could look for a TV with a full array LED back light. Then you would have blotches of light spots following around the bright images on the screen. Being smaller, they may be less bothersome. And of course you could look at a plasma display that doesn't try to play tricks on your eye.

I had the 8600 (from Amazon) and sent it back and got the Samsung 7100. The PQ on the Samsung is much better as is the brightness. Whites were just too dull on the 8600. I will say the 3D was much better on the 8600.

I have read post saying these latest samsungs get a lot of light bleeding/clouding/flashlight, or banding. Is there any?
Can it play mkv, avi, mp4 through directly from PC through media share (wireless)?

I was almost finalized to Purchase LG L8600. However now I am thinking to go for LM9600. Which one is the best choice. I know the price is major difference, which i do not care much.

I am lil confused when I read CNET review for LM9600. IS that some thing which can be ignored??? Pls give your suggestions.....

I have owned this TV for 2 months now and have not had any problems with it. Most of the reviews you read online were done before the TV was officially released or right at the time it was released. A new update came out last month and since then the picture quality has been even better than when I first got it. I am not sure if it is because of the firmware update or the fact my TV went through a break-in period, but I see much less clouding than I did when I first got it. I have been watching a few Blu-ray movies and have not noticed any abnormalities that others have seen in the past. Last night I watched The Grey in 24p, which has many dark and white scenes, and I did not notice any blurring at all. Maybe a few of the problems folks have had in the past were fixed. If you calibrate the TV properly it will look great.

My suggestion is you get the LM9600 rather than the LM8600. The LM9600 is the only one that is full NANO backlit and with the price as low as it is now I believe it is definitely worth getting over the LM8600. Plus if you use the smart TV functions and internet, the LM9600 has a slightly better processor which will help in those areas.

You can test for banding and DSE in that video, I can clearly see dse on my 760s with that video.

Watch the sky, you should se like dirty stripes that dont move, if you have dse

on my 55LM7600, i have a banding on the right side of the screen. i notice is with the fast panning screen movement while watching, golf,football,baseball,soccer and also on the sky. and i scheduled to return my set and get the replacement tom. i hope the banding will be gone.

Anyone knows what "2d TV-ready" means/ is?

After i was dumb enough to impulse buy an LG 47G2 (Google) i read about the atrocious black levels and jaggies around whites and promptly returned it for an LM7600. Even Amazon users quickly weeded out the poor product.

We have had the 47LM7600 for two weeks now and nothing but praise except the occasional ARC hiccup the Marantz 1403. 3D is very nice and bright, i have active LED glasses with my HC9000D in the basement so I am not new to it.

Sometimes in the imaging world, I've seen people attempt to compare cameras and favor the image set with the software sharpness tweaked upwards ever so slightly. It's a very hard to thing to control. Not so far as to approach graininess, but enough to make it feel as though it's standing out.

Similar I suppose to the old stereo salesman trick of selling the expensive receiver by turning the volume up ever so slightly.
