Advice on Spandex AT screen color

Hello,

I am looking to build an AT spandex screen for my basement. The size will be 98" wide, 112" diag. and 55" high. We will be using a ceiling mounted Panasonic PT-AE3000U at about 13'6" from the screen. Seating distance will be approximately 145".

What I am looking for help with is screen color. This is a basement theater, so I have complete lighting control, even during the daylight hours. With that in mind should I go for a gray screen (seems to be the most popular color for spandex around here) or white? Would a second layer of spandex in black be advisable?

TIA

You need to consider using either a silver without sheen, or a bright white spandex.

As far as a backing material, an additional white piece of spandex generally is best to reduce bleed through and light loss and to mask the presence of any speaker components. However some people do use a black spandex for the same purpose.

Thanks very much.

I will give the Moleskin Matt Silver from Spandex world a try. I guess I will order some white to go behind it so I can try it both ways.

curious as to your results. i went with a white front layer and a black layer behind it and couldnt be happier, both at night and in PLENTY of direct ambient day light (though you won't catch me watching dark/sci-fi features in that environment, it does work VERY well for things like sports and regular TV i have found, even on the low power setting of a JVC).

Planning on trying the same material with the HC4000 that I'll FINALLY be able to order this month after waiting almost a year (life happens). Hopefully it will work at a 120" screen in a light controlled room. I'll find out soon enough. Any thoughts on what the screen gain would actually be?

Which material would produce a higher gain? White or silver?

Both are "Matte" sheen, and the White would probably have a slight edge but both are close enough to not bear any real comparison. However the Silver will assure you of richer colors and less light absorption. The White cannot do squat to help improve your perceived Blacks either.

Thanks MM! I'll order the silver.
