No more Mouse Ears?

Seriously? I was just thinking I should pick up an extra gallon of sorcerer's hat for touch-ups... That really stinks!

"Mouse Ears" might have been dropped from the swatch pallet, but they can still mix it to formulae. Just say you need to color match a previous batch.

It might be a local thing. My Home Depot has the Disney line and I see no indication of them getting rid of it. I just used "mouse ears" in my room.

Will any of the finished screen wall be exposed? If not just use the cheapest flat black paint they have. That's what I did inside all my speaker nooks as they were fabric covered.

I once used a black by Glidden for a painted screen border at my old house. I think it was called onyx black and seemed to work well.

In regards to the OP's question about painting the new drywall, I've never been a fan of the "paint and primer in one". I prefer to do a coat of primer first, especially on new drywall to seal it. I'd also recommend a gray primer if you're doing dark colored walls. I learned that the hard way when it took 5 coats to get my walls a good shade of dark red. I've heard good things about Glidden's "Gripper Gray".

If you really want Mouse Ears then you can try showing the paint mixer this photo of the label on my recently bought gallon. They might be able to input the numbers for the colorant and get you the same color.

That formula is basically open the can of dark base and pour in the max amount of black possible.

How big is the sample? they put in 288/384th of an once of black colorant.

I stay away from Behr paint. I had a really bad experience with it. I now use nothing but Sherwin Williams.

If I remember correctly the samples are 8 ounces. Since there's 128 ounces to a gallon, if 288/384th of an ounce goes into the sample then that means 12 ounces goes in a gallon.

When I bought my mouse ears at HD the guy told me there are at least two other named colors with the exact same formula, so getting the blackest black should be pretty easy.

I used Glidden's flat black from Home Depot. It is premixed. Went on great, not problems yet.

I'd have to agree with this. Spend a little more on better paint. It goes on easier and covers better.

Although I've used a lot of Behr over the years, I'm continually kicking myself half way through as I am using it.

I personally have never had a problem with Behr. Oftentimes I get excellent coverage with only one coat on lighter colors. I always recommend it.

I agree, I personally haven't experienced any problems after using it in 5 rooms at my house.

What types of problems are people experiencing?

Another vot for Sherwin Williams ProMar 300 BLACK flat. I bought a gallon of Dutchboy and had them add 12oz of lamp black to it for what they said at Menards would be "the blackest paint you could get, because that is all the pigment the can will hold". I painted the ceiling with that and the roller marks were everywhere. Painted another coat and although better, there were still roller marks. And everywhere I did a touch up was clearly visable the next day.

Went to Sherwin Williams and they said the pre-mixed ProMar300 flat black. This is the low end contractor grade paint. Painted the theater ceailing with one coat (which already had 2 coats of Dutchboy) and the sofits with one coat (never been painted yet) and not only did it cover great, there were NO roller marks anywhere. And because of the boo boos of moving a board around and scuffing the paint, I have touched up the black and you cannot see where I touched it up.

I am completely sold on this paint ($26 gal with a contractor discount) and it is super black. Just an FYI.

No specific "problems." Yes, it poors out of the can and it rolls out on the walls... all like it is supposed to.

That said, I've found better quality paints to go on easier and cover better.

Yes, I've painted a room in one coat with Behr, a light green color. But I've also had to paint multiple coats with darker, more problematic colors. Also, I had significant burnishing with the dark brown flat paint in our theater, such that I had to add a transparant varnish on top to eliminate the burnishing.

To sum it up, yes Behr works, it isn't like the paint refuses to stick to a primed wall. But if cost isn't too much more, painting with a higher quality paint like Hershfield's is a lot easier and tends to cover better, imo.

Sorry for the Necropost, but I found out from talking to the paint guy at my local HD that Behr lost the contract with Disney. He also said he used to work for Valspar and that is supposed to be be who picked up the contract. Guess that means that you will eventually be able to get Mouse Ears Black from Lowes...

GUYS! Disney mouse ears is not rocket science. In the case of Home Depot it was basically add 3 parts of the black Behr colorant to 29 parts Behr Deep Base. That is the formula for a quart I have sitting here. Adjust accordingly for a gallon. There is nothing in it from Disney, no pixie dust or Magic Kingdom on the label. Disney may have packed up their color display and Home Depot may have removed the name Mouse Ears from the computer but just ask an experienced paint mixologist to give you the deep base with the max black colorant. Mouse ears was/is nothing more than marketing hype.

I just bought a gallon of the blackest black Behr can make at HomeDepot. He said "That's an easy one!". He said it is just deep base and add as much black as it can hold. He said, in the case of a 1 gallon deep base, it is 16oz of black. He said it is the easiest formula to remember but here, I'll print it off for you.

The sticker said "deep base, 16oz black".

Funny. It looks good too. Covers very well. It is the premium plus.

Mouse ears is 9.375% black from my sticker, You got around 12%. Should work just fine.

You clearly don't *get* Disney.

My Home Depot has the Mouse Ears Black in the computer but there are 2 choices:

- Mouse Ears Black Enamel (which I believe they said has the primer mixed in)
- Mouse Ears Black Flat Matte (no primer mixed in)

So from the photo posted earlier it looks like you are using the Enamel? Anyone know what the difference is and which is preferred?

Mouse ears was just 12 oz of black pigment in the dark base. I have a can as reference in my shop. If they type BLACK as the color name in any of the Behr ultra paints it will say 12 oz of black pigment. No pixie dust was involved in the making of Mouse Ears. ALL marketing hype. I've bought Flat Black, Black Enamel, Black Satin in the last month, all the same formula.
