Help With Speaker Selection

Hi everybody!

I am looking at putting together a new home theater sound system. What I have today is just my 55" Samsung LCD HDTV and a PS3 used for blu-ray and gaming.

I am looking at purchasing a receiver, and as much speaker as I can afford. Here are some specific details:

Budget and specific requirements: $1500 budget. This should include a receiver and speakers. The speakers will ideally be a 5.1 setup unless I can get some sort of insane deal on a good 7.1 setup in that price range. If absolutely necessary, I would even be willing to go with a 2.1 setup for starters, as long as I am confident I can add on to the system with the same type of speakers later down the road. The front channels should ideally be floor speakers or something that can be mounted on a stand. The surrounds I would also like to mount on stands as I don't want to hang them on the walls.

Sound quality is important. I am not a "true audiophile" if you will, but I am pretty anal about my sound and getting the best possible quality. I want to use the system for a few things: Playing high quality lossless audio is important. My whole music collection is Apple Lossless and I plan on using the airplay feature of the Denon 1912 to stream lossless music to the system. Secondly, blu-ray and HDTV for movies. Finally, gaming on my PS3

Room: The TV is mounted on the wall, and the seating is about 10 feet from that wall. I have enough space on either side of the TV for some front speakers. Ideally I would like some floor standing speakers for the fronts that would sit on the floor about 3ft to the side of the TV on each side. I have room on a shelf/cabinet under the TV for a center channel. I have room on the side of couch / seating as well as behind the couch for speakers that ideally I would mount on a stand of some sort for the best results.

Receiver: It needs to have Apple airplay support. I will also be streaming apple lossless to it from a PC so it needs the ability to play that format. I also have a handful of SACDs from back in the day I would not mind enjoying again. So far, I have been really impressed with the Denon AVR-1912 reviews and I am planning on that unit. Even though it is last years model, I can pick it up for $399 and it seems to meet all my requirements. It will not take a DSD stream over HDMI for SACD, but from what I understand there are some SACD players out there that will convert the DSD to multichannel PCM and then send it over the HDMI and this receiver would be able to do that.

Speakers: Here is where I really need some help. I really have no idea where to start. I have done a lot of reading and research and have found some general recommendations. Many people seem to like the Wharfedale Diamond 10 HCP bundle, but I have no idea where to buy it. Seems like it is basically offered in the UK but I am in the USA. I have also heard good things about Q Acoustics 2000i and Polk Audio in general. Ideally, a good bundle where I can get everything at once would be nice.

I would really appreciate your thoughts and opinions on the speakers and overall setup. Again, fronts should ideally sit right on the floor and be a good 3-4' tall or on stands. Surrounds/Rears will also need to go on stands. I think that is basically it thanks for your time!

Hi -- I have the older 80GB fat version...but not the version that is capable of SACD ripping (sigh)

The only reason why I asked, is because the old fat ps3 models (I have the same one) will not bitstream HD audio it will only be able to do PCM. This is not a problem as it will still send it HDMI to you receiver it, Just the DTS-HD light will not show up on the receiver. LOL! So dont get discouraged If you are hoping to listen to HD audio

I appreciate the heads up. Truth be told, down the road I will probably pick up a stand alone BD player that can double as a new SACD player as well. My PS3 does not do SACD and my old Pioneer SACD player can only do the 5.1 analog outputs.
