The "official" Yamaha RX-V673 thread. 7.2-Channel Network AVR - Page 87

Your connections are correct.
Read the Owners manual regarding DSP modes.
If you go Menu > Information. That will tell you what kind of audio your source is outputting.

Dialogue lift and 3d will not work in Straight mode. What mode are you using? What is your source?
You are probably getting 2.0 from the optical cable. That would explain it.

sky hd box is the source, when I press the surround decode button the only option is straight on 90% of channels, sometime when adverts come on it seems to offer neo 6 and the others buy when mobie come back on it reverts to straight only. the only options o have are standard or spectacle etc

why would the optical only give me 2.0, I read it was the best way to get sound from the source ?
You are running optical straight from sky to AVR?
yes, sound into av1 via optical and video via hdmi
post #2590 of 3379
Ok Youre good there. You will get 5.1. Is there a reason why you dont go Sky to AVR to TV all via HDMI? Why are you using optical at all?
I did have it all hdmi bit I read a thread that advised sky hd had problems sending audio ober hdmi and the best option was optical. don't get me wrong tje sound is great, jusy geel I am missing out as.most of the time the only option o seem to have is straight, surely I shoild press the sur decode button and have the option of pro logic, pro logic movie, neo 6 etc on all channels ? I tested it tonight, all 10 hd movie channels and all only offered me straight apart from mad max which os about a 20 year old film ! also the optical cable is a high quality one.

this is really frustrating, think the avr may be playing up, contacted the seller and they just advised to call yamaha direct
post #2592 of 3379
No need for that yet. When you use Staight it will only say Straight if it is 5.1. If it is not 5.1 then it will say something else. DTS, Dolby PL, etc. Those are used to "fake" 5.1 with a 2.0 source. Thats why it is switching when the commercials come on and during the 20 year old movie. The show is 5.1 but the commercials are 2.0.
Again Dialogue lift and 3d will not work in Straight mode. Nothing unusual seems to be happening.

When I use the web control panel to try to update the unit's firmware the receiver displays a checking or verifying message first on the display and then says DEVICE ERROR and the web control panel hangs. Unplugging and re-plugging the receiver returns it to normal behavior. I was unable to update the firmware due to this. Following some instructions by someone on Amazon I used a Mac to format my USB stick instead of my Windows computer and this finally allowed me to update the firmware manually. I now have the latest firmware, which I thought perhaps would resolve any error. However I still get DEVICE ERROR if I try to check for updates via the internet connection. I haven't noticed any malfunctions or improper behavior with the unit but I am also not using every single feature on the unit.

Has anyone encountered this issue and found a cause or solution that did not entail a hardware repair? Like many others there is no accessible Yamaha service center near me. If there is something deeply wrong with the hardware I imagine it would be best to get it repaired under warranty, but I'd like to hope this is not a hardware issue but some technical glitch relating to my connections or some such.
Sounds like a minor technical glitch to me.
btw Its easier to update via the 673 Advanced Menu instead of trying to do it with the Web Control Panel or USB.

One other issue I'm having is that although I can log into my SiriusXM account with no issue, when I actually attempt to play a station all I get is "Access Error".

You are not alone. Some people also get the access error with Pandora and Rhapsody. Call Yamaha and report it. Dont be surprised if Yamaha claims they have never heard of the issue and blames it on Sirius.
Sometimes setting up a static IP address will fix it. Sometimes not.

Thanks... My Pandora works perfectly. I don't have Rhapsody account to test. Internet Radio also works. I will report to Yamaha though I'm not expecting a fix. Is this a problem with certain MODELS or certain individual UNITS? The SiriusXM "Access Error" combined with web interface update "DEVICE ERROR" perhaps point to some little hardware failure in the unit somewhere?

Thanks for all your help bond, shouldnt I be able to use the sur decode button on any input signal and opt to listen in say neo 6 or another ???? also the 3d mode and dialogue up lift still did not work on the old mad max movie and ot was working recently on the 5.1 set up ?

thr key here is that I seem to have lost useof surround decode, shouldn't it always be available ?

There is nothing wrong with your unit. Those are software/firmware problems. The "access error" is not unique to the 673. It have heard of it on 671, 673, 675 and 773.

Yes. I suggest you read/reread the Owners manual. Then maybe call Yamaha. I dont think theres anything wrong with your unit.

My 673 is currently running in 5.1 mode. I'd really like to add two more speakers to take advantage of its 7.1 capability. However, my room layout won't allow me to add wires. To wire up the rear speakers and subwoofer I have now meant cutting holes in the ceiling and digging a trench in the concrete floor, which I'd rather only do once.

Are there any wireless speaker options that would allow me to go from 5.1 to 7.1?

I noticed while playing Pandora that there are no ads. I guess that is some arrangement with Yam due to hardware having Pandora built in I guess.

I also noticed while listening to a particular station, (Alternative hits, or whatever) there are many repeats. It seems to play the same 10 songs (randomly) over and over again. In a 4 hour listening period I would hear the same some about 3 times. Is this normal? I have the free Pandora subscription and I do not hit any like or dislike buttons.
There are ads if you listen long enough.
The reason you hear the same songs is because you do not use the like/dislike buttons.
ah. Ok. Listening to Pandora on let's say, an iPad, to the same channel and I believe it is different. I'll look into it.

I just picked up a logitech harmony 700 remote at costco. I just happened upon it and took advantage of the good costco price of $79. Any word on how well this thing works with the 673? Thought i would throw the question out there before i opened the packaging and found out it was unworthy.

I have the 773 model but since i easily found this thread and I doubt theirs a difference, can anyone tell me if you can set manual lip sync delay per input source?

As of right now I can set a delay but it alters the delay for each input.

If this is not normal behavior im sure it worked a month or so ago. All I can think of is i recently sold my speakers and went through an upgrade process, so at one point i disabled all my speakers except for 2 I had remaining, I cant imagine this doing anything but its when I noticed the issue, I added back all my other speakers, and re-ran yapo tonight, everything is working properly but the lipsync delay is still universal, when i adjust one input, it effects the other input and i did not think it was always like this.

I don't think the lip sync delay is tied to an input, so I believe the behavior you're seeing is expected. TV is the only input I have that experiences lip sync issues, and it varies by channel and even by the show. In my case, I need to adjust it for whatever I'm watching anyway, so having a setting just for the TV input wouldn't help in my case. It might still be a nice feature, though, for those who use Netflix or other sources that experience lip sync issues. Let me know you discover that I'm wrong smile.gif
