Is there a reason why you cannot go: Cable box HDMI out>673 HDMI in and then 673 HDMI out>TV HDMI in? This would be ideal for the cable box and you don't need a digi op cable.
Are you trying to hook up any other components?
that is the way i have in installed but with the optical hookup per owners cd, 3rd option, page 26 I think.

The diagram you refer to shows installing an optical cable from the TV audio out to the AV4 input. This is the "audio return channel" which allows you to run audio thru the AVR if you are watching over the air TV and not going thru the AVR otherwise. For the connection from the DVR to the AVR the HDMI cable will carry the digital audio and you don't need an optical connection there.

You should go into the setup menu on your DVR and see what type of audio it is set to output. My DirecTV DVR was outputting 2 channel PCM by default until I changed it to Dolby Digital.

Thanx for the reply, timewarner box only allows HDMI out so far, has option of "other and "digital. Has I am typing the optical cable is not installed at all with the same results. Will continue to work with cable box. Can get "cinema dsp" through "Adventure" program now. Again thanx for the help.
update, was able to get pro log II for a bit, then it went away. Cable box is set for Dolby Digital. Still working with time warner

Yes. You can set the maximum volume and also the volume that the receiver powers on at. I am not at home now but Menu - Setup will get you close. There is also a way to lock the settings so that they cant change them.

Wow...so there is no manual set up of the audio levels!!! This is the first receiver I've come across that can't do this. I was hoping not to to do YPAO as the 673 is located in the basement of the house and I'd have to get an extension for the mic. Even if i get a calibration disc there is no way for the 673 to actually play a flat level to adjust to. In my past receivers once the test tones are played by the receiver it is a flat fixed level for the spl to read off of and can not be control by the master volume. How does such a disc work?
Thanks again for the help.
Jay

Have your tv on (using Gui screen),hit the "on Screen" button on remote,go to "setup" and under the speaker setting, click manual setup,go to the "level folder"

Hi Guys,

So I have just purchased Yamaha HTR 6065 (essentially the RX-V673) and also Sony 55"HX850. This is how I have connected everything::

Sony TV via ARC HDMI outlet connected to HDMI out on receiver
PS3 via HDMI to HDMI 1 on receiver
Foxtel (pay tv) box to HDMI 2 on receiver
DVD player to HDMI 3 on receiver

Is this the correct / best way for all connections I need ?

Any particular suggestions as to set up i need to make in the receiver menus / set up features etc ?

Thanks for your help

Cheers
Chris

Those connections are fine.

Is it somehow possible to disable that receiver won't switch to airplay when it receives a signal?
Even worse is when I want to airplay in zone2, then it switches both zones to airplay..
This is the only problem i had so far, everything else is brilliant.

No, you won't see the GUI unless you connect to the TV by HDMI (p. 27 of the manual). And you won't be able to connect any HDMI video sources to the receiver either. They are pretty much assuming you will use this with an HDMI TV, although you can control it via a web browser if you connect a network cable.
Is it possible to have zone 1 and 2 from the same source and have no delay on zone 2?

Looking for some purchase guidance, if anybody can help out.

I've been looking for receivers lately since my aging Sony STR-DG510 lost it's front left channel. I'm able to pick up the Yamaha RX-V673 for $384 out the door, but I don't know if it will be overkill for my setup. It seems like a great price if I'm going to eventually use all of the features, If not I can grab the RX-V373 for $174 out the door.

*The Yamaha RX-V673 would be my first experience with 1080p upconversion, and network features.
*Primary use is Gaming, Movies, Sports.
*Light music use.

(5.1) Speaker Setup:

(Front L/R) Yamaha NS 555
(Rear L/R) Boston HS 40
(Center) Bose VCS 10
(Subwoofer) Yamaha YST SW215

I'm in the market for a 673, any chance this deal is available online?

For that price, you should buy it. Your speakers should be fine. You can upgrade your speakers later. I am currently looking at the Denon and Manratz, but if I could find a 672 for that price, I would buy it. If you don't mind would you let us know where you find this deal?
I've been considering the same deal. But I've been torn between the 673 for $384 versus the 773 for $560. Wanting airplay/network features over my current Denon 988/2808. The deal is via newegg, but you need an exclusive 30% off code emailed to you (I've made alot of purchases recently). The code expires tonight, however.

The price is from Newegg with a 30% off coupon for receivers. If you're a regular customer, they will send you coupons through email periodically. Coupon is good for the RX-V373 up to the RX-A3020.

Impossible to answer a question like this for someone really. Personally, if I could afford either one I would get the 673 because I know myself. If I got the 373 then in a month I would be wishing that I got the 673. You can't go wrong with either one though.

+1 budget plays a big part. Buy what you can afford.

I'd be very grateful if anyone has a coupon they don't plan on using

I received mine, but I deleted it yesterday. I though that the coupons are tied to your email address though.

I ended up buying the Yamaha RX-V673 for $384 at Newegg.

Now I need to start doing some speaker research.
So overall, would all of you who have this receiver recommend it?

I can get it for $448 from American TV - not as good as the Newegg deal that was being mentioned but quite a bit less than I've been able to find it elsewhere. Plus I'm about 10 minutes from the store so I can return it if I don't like it.

Thanks!

At that price, I'd definitely recommend it. I'd be on the fence about paying the $550 retail price, only because other brands like Denon are so strong at that price point.

This is a repost of a question I asked before but,

Is there any way to change the sound settings in ZONE 2. I have my speakers playing airplay in the bedroom, I was wondering whether I could tweak the sound at all??

Thanks

I don't think that you can tweak Zone 2 independently but I am not sure. I don't use it. If you dont get an answer soon you might want to call Yamaha.

I've been trying to google and forum search it already but couldn't find an answer to my problems.
-The volume of the music is so much louder than the tv even tough I have the Input trim set to +6.0dB already. So whenever I switch from TV to music it blasts my ears out. Is there anything I can do about that? And the TV can basically only be heard on 2ch stereo, If I use 'standard' then there is no sound whatsoever, all the other modes like sport are super silent.

-Also the volume of the individual channels varies a lot, it does very little with the TV speakers too, but when listening through the amp it is really at an uncomfortable level and makes switching through channels quickly a pain. Is there a feature to have all the channels at the same volume level somehow?

-Last but not least I read in the manual that you can't have the same music played in the main zone and zone 2 at the same time, is that true? I don't have my speakers for zone 2 yet so I can't test it. Says in the manual u can only do that with the 'Party mode' of the 773. Hope it's not true, would be a total bummer and I'd be really pissed that that is not disclaimed more prominently anywhere...Was looking forward to using that feature a lot...

Thanks a lot

PS: Current setup is just 2 Primus P363 since I am still waiting for the rest of the speakers to arrive.

Look into the volume settings on the cable box or tv. They can usually be adjusted as well to help make up the difference.

How is your TV audio cabled? Are you using an optical output from the TV?

Zone 2 is analog only, but usually you can do a workaround. For example when I play a CD on my bluray player, the audio normally comes over the HDMI cable(digital). I ran a RCA audio cable from the analog outputs on the Bluray to Audio 1 on the v673 and select Audio 1 for the Zone 2 input.
