Well the problem with that is that the 'pass through' volume is fine. Wouldn't that mess with it?
And I cannot say it with 100% certainty but yesterday when I got the receiver and hooked everything up in the room I think it wasn't like that. I mean I don't know for sure how big the difference in volume was from tv to music, but I know for sure that all the other sound modes apart from 2ch also produced at least normal sound since I watched a bball game on the 'sports' setting.
Since I nicely wired everything into the tv rack I have to crank it up to like -17.0dB - I listen to music at like 39.0db wink.gif (and that is with the tv setting at +6.0db)

I don't think it is the cable since the pass through sound is fine...

The 673 specs were too close to my 665, so I opted for the 773.

Ok that blows. I mainly use Pandora and stream from my phone/pc. I might send it back and get the 773 instead even tough I have to debate whether I wanna shell out another 250 just for that...especially since I really don't need the wifi adapter. Are there any other amps in that price range that would be a better deal then and provide me with a Zone 2 that can play the same like the main zone?

I will try if the PS3 can use HDMI and chinch (does anyone know, would have to buy the cinch...) and then I can use pandora from the PS3 for parties even tough that would suck since I love the AV controller app. I'd also have to copy my music to the PS3 for parties then...sigh. What a bummer.

You might consider adding a WD Live streaming media player. You can stream Pandora from it and it has HDMI and analog outputs. Works great for streaming movies from a PC. About $80.

Have you checked your audio settings in your cable box and made sure you are outputting bitstream and not PCM?

Hmmm, all I can find in the audio settings for audio digital output is 'Two Channel Only' and 'Dolby Digital'. It's set to the latter.
I'll consider the WD, sounds like a better option for the money (compared to getting the 773) and I can use it for the PC as well. Is there an app for that too tough? I mean can I access the WD via phone?

No. I gave this media player to my parents, and they like it. The only thing I don't like about is that you have to have your TV on so you can see what you are doing. I go lucky and bought an opened box Logitech Squeezebox Radio for $44 dollars with 3 yrs. extended warranty. I can use the squeezebox phone app, and access it that way.

I went through every setting again and manually deleted all the speakers that I don't have out of the setup, set the pandora volume trim to -4.0dB and that helped somehow. Now all the TV sound modes have the same loudness and work. Seems like it tried to access speakers that I didn't even have in all the other settings. Thanks for your help!

Still very unhappy about the zone 2 issue. Read all the specs on amazon again about the 673 and 773 and in hindsight, when u know what it is it makes sense about the 'party mode'. But this being my first amp I have automatically assumed that the 663 would be able to play the same music (of all sources) in both zones. And why wouldn't it?

Anyone have a coupon for a deal for a 773 biggrin.gifwink.gif


Edit: I have three more questions actually:
- Is it really not possible to fast forward/rewind media streamed from the server?
- When I am using Airplay I cannot see my library on the screen, I can only see it on the Mac. So if I click on the next song for example via yamaha remote/app I can only go through the folder that the current song is in on itunes. How do I display my library?
- Is there a way to make the Gui look nicer? I mean the amp can upscale to 4k and the Gui looks like VGA graphics. lol. And can u change the guitar picture in the background somehow?

-Is there a way to tell the amp to STOP playing songs on Pandora when switching source? When I switch to from Pandora to TV and then back to Pandora the songs just continue playing in the background, even if i watch Tv for hours before I go back...

1) Not as far as I've been able to figure out. I stream through my TV or BD player now

2) All airplay does is play what's on your apple device on your AVR. It does not send library info (other than the current song) or allow two way interaction. To do what you want you need to use the DLNA option. Or even better HTPC which will do it all through Windows Media Player. This is what I'll eventually build. There is a ton of good info about it on this forum if you search HTPC.

3) No. I agree it's a pretty lousy GUI. Oh well. Still better than the Comcast/Xfinity.

Ok thank you. Btw if anyone ever stumbles across the same problem; I just checked and the PS3 can send the audio through HDMI and chinch at the same time. So for my parties I will just play and stream (forgot about that, don't have to copy it over) my music via PS3. So indeed no need to upgrade to the 773.

I hope this is my final question. I just received my sb12-nsd today and realized that i dont have a cable other than an old audio rca (the one with the red and white connectors). So I hooked that up to my Yamaha RX-V673 following the boxed instructions and running the YPAO. Unfortunately there was basically no bass (neither music nor movie) unless i turned the speakers down and the sub to the max. Which obviously didnt result in good sound.
Is that due to the cable not being the right one? Would I have better results if I ordered a dual-shielded rg6 or is it the settings from my amp/sub that are not right?
Also I would like to know if I would benefit from hooking up two cables to the sub since the RX-V is a 7.2 but I only have one sub.

(I sent that question to SVS too, but then realized it is Friday already, and waiting till monday for a reply would be killing me biggrin.gif)

I would get a dual shielded sub cable (roughly $10.00 at monoprice.com).
After running ypao make sure to set your front speakers to "small" and set the crossover to 80 or 90.
No benefit at all for hooking up 2 cables. In fact it may do harm.

The cable you are using is probably ok, but won't hurt to get a better one.

YPAO seems to do a poor job of setting subwoofer level, particularly with one that can go real low such as you have. Go into Setup > Speaker > Manual Setup > Level and see where it set your subwoofer level and adjust as needed. Also in Manual setup, you need to change Power Amp Assign to 7ch + 1ZONE, if you plan to use Zone 2.

After running Ypao, manually turn up the subwoofer level on the receiver, and adjust the sub directly from there. The problem is likely that the Ypao set the sub output too low to trigger the sub to turn on

Hi,

I'm looking into buying this receiver. Though, what's important for me is that I have some control over the subwoofer. I.e. I wanna be able to quickly turn down the volume or even turn the subwoofer off when watching a movie or listening to music (in order to save peace with neighbours).

I checked the manual and I think the Sub can be turned down theough the Option Menu. But the only way to turn the sub off seems to change the spaker setup/configuratipn, wich doesn't sound all,that "quick" to me.

I might have to go for a larger receivermlike the RX-A1020 or RX-V1071 since they offer two patterns which saves different speaker setups.

Once you get used to it it would take about 6 or 7 seconds. I can think of a lot better reasons to upgrade.

DSD over HDMI is supported (page 127 of the manual). But it's decoded by the DSP and processed as PCM, it can't be sent directly to the DACs as it can on the high-end models. The manual doesn't say what sampling rate is used when DSD is converted to PCM.

Hey folks, is anyone here using Front Presence speakers? If so, is there any advantage to adding them if they can only lay above the top left and right corners of the television (which means just inside the front mains)? I only ask because that's really the only place I can have them, since they are on stands and not on mounds (and those are the only places the stands can fit).

Or does that not quite "work"?

It is not ideal but would certainly be helpful. It will give the impression of a wider field even though they are not on the outside of your mains. The most notable difference will be when listening to music especially in the "7chStereo" mode. It would be even better if you can place them higher. ie Hanging from the ceiling.

Hi all!

Bought one of these over the weekend together with the wifi plug & yamaha's 7.1 EF speakers (all within my budget!), it's my first receiver & home speaker rig (besides pc speakers).
I've setup 5.1 in zone1 and the other two bookshelf speakers will go into another room.

I had a couple of things I had to change from stock:
- YPAO Large to small changes (YPAO gave no subby?...)
- ARC gave me no tv audio (had to enable it)
- Changed the resistance from 8ohm to 6ohm (not really sure what this does, just remembered reading the speaker saying 6ohms)

this thread gave some good insight (haven't read all of it yet)...so thank you! Got notified of a firmware update...not sure if I should update (don't fix it if it aint broken??)

For me, the receiver is pretty awesome (probably above what I need spec wise), having the single remote programmed for the TV & audio is awesome...the airplay via the mobiles....so convenient.
Nothing beats me helping out the missus when she's trying to just get some audio from the gear and for me to swoop in on my horse (I mean while I'm on n the toilet via my mobile/in the kitchen/on the pc etc.....!!!!) and do it for her.

Is there anything else can I do regarding laggy audio?

3. The FM antenna....I got a piece of wire which to me looks like its missing the outside ring of the male connector? Anyways I plug it in but it doesnt exactly click/firmly fit...?? Feels loose. Is this normal? (HAHAHAHA no puns intended). E.g. it looks like its connecting up 1 core wire instead of 2? (Not sure if FM antennas are only 1 core).

You can try using a digital optical cable from tv to 673 and see if that helps lag. Problem is you may not get a 5.1 signal from an external source. It depends on the tv. Such a delay is pretty unusual. Are there any audio settings in the xtreamer?

@Bond007, Wildmanzero JD NC: Thanks I will try that Monday or whenever my cable arrives (ordered the mediabridge from amazon since i have prime). Problem is that the sub was definitely on, just barely noticeable (I had to go right in front of it). And when I turned up the bass it really didn't sound good. Hope that i can figure it out cause the way it is now my 12 (?) year old cambridge 5.1 computersys/sub sounded better, which is - let's say - a little disappointing when spending 650 on a sub biggrin.gif

@RX-V673: I would recommend the firmware update because u can use Pandora then. No Pandora would've been a no go for me. The nice thing is that it is absolutely ad-free on the amp, awesome. I don't know what else it does but I'm sure someone here knows or u can just google it. Update works like a charm, no hassle at all.
Love the app too and so does the Missus biggrin.gif

For whatever reason I had the lag too, then I just restarted everything (maybe even unplugged not sure) and no problems ever since. So u might wanna try that maybe it helps.

I'll try the optical cable and see if it makes a diff, using a 55HX850. I had a brief look at the xtreamer settings, guess I gotta look deeper!

Check the Advanced menu? The 673 has it.


The winamp plugin I found isn't free....winamps jump feature is so handy, looks like I'll need to find an alternative way to send music from my pc.

I tried updating the firmware via a USB stick and got the Device Error after some verifying...tried FAT & FAT32 and no go...guess I'll leave it alone until I find another usb stick..dont want to do it over wifi...

Also I isolated the lagged audio issue when using the xtreamers, its definitely the xtreamer, when I hook it up to a laptop via usb and hdmi the laptop to receiver all is good when playing the same file.

Repositioned my subby to the corner of the room and YPAO gave the W-3 Error..I'll need to look at this after work, I didnt save the setting.

Airplay isnt as good on my android SE xperia mini, much easier on the iphone...(theres also two yamaha apps on the iphone), there isnt an airplay button in the native music player.
