The "official" Yamaha RX-V673 thread. 7.2-Channel Network AVR - Page 30

I discovered that doing the INIT for Video resets the Video Mode to Direct. The volume changes were displayed on the screen then. I set Video Mode to "Processing", then the volume changes no longer displayed on the screen.

Can you help me a bit on this.I did my initial set up today and I have Zone 2 connected with 2 Boston Accoustic speakers connected and cannot get any sound. My prior Yamaha HTR 5280 which is now twelve years old all I had to do was press the Zone 2 button and there was music or what was playing on the tv. I'm currently running BDP with Pandora connected to HDMI 1 and DTV to HDMI 2 I would like also to port the usb and IPhone to the screened porch. I guess I'm not understanding the redundant connections that you are talking about.

I also am having trouble reading the manual because my eyes are not what they used to be sux getting old..

Thanks in Advance...

In addition to your HDMI connections, What I mean by redundant analog connections is patching a set of RCA cables from R/L audio outputs from your DTV or your BDP to audio inputs 1 or 2 or AV 5,6 on the Yamaha. Then play back audio from these sources through the respective inputs out to zone 2. However some BDPs don't have analog R/L audio outputs. In that case, a digital to analog converter
http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-Digital-Analog-Audio-Converter/dp/B005PWPUW6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1357459919&sr=8-2&keywords=fio+digital+to+analog
can be installed between the BDP's digital output and one of the the Yamaha's analog inputs. For the adapter to work, you have to keep your BDP's digital output settings to PCM instead of bitstream.
Or you can run analog audio from your TV to the Yamaha, but the TV would have to be ON in order to send HDMI audio from your BDP to the TV, and analog out from the TV to the Yamaha, and out to zone 2.
There is a firmware update available from Yamaha which allows you to play Pandora, Sirius/XM, Rhapsody directly through the Yamaha, without the BDP. Zone 2 will play these network apps, as well as USB, without issue.
Don't forget to turn up the volume of zone 2, after you turn it on for the first time.

Does anyone know if I can use a wifi adapter to pickup my router's wifi/network and then run ethernet cable out of the adapter to the V673? Long story short, I'd like to use AirPlay, but my router is too far away to hard wire the V673 and I don't know if a wireless adapter can pick up the wifi signalof my network (without any LAN connection - just plugged into the wall) and then port a hard wire out to the receiver... anyone do this?

I saw some posts about wifi adapting and using this http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-WNCE2001-Universal-Internet-Adapter/dp/B007CO5DZ4/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1344735266&sr=1-2&keywords=netgear+wnce2001, but I don't know if a wifi adapter can transmit signal through an ethernet port so I can hard wire something from the adapter itself.

Instead of going the WiFi route, you could use one of these kits: http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-85Mbps-Powerline-Network-Adapter/dp/B001AZUTCS/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_3
I'm currently using one with my AVR, and it works perfectly. Just remember to plug the units directly into a wall outlet and not a surge suppressor or power conditioner.

I was thinking of getting the RX-V373 as my first AVR but I notice there's almost no mention of it, not even one of those "official" threads.

Going by this http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/?tab=product_lineup&selected=372783_372793_&mode=compare

It seems the only difference between the 373 and 473 is the 473 being 15 watts higher, has DSP for 3D cinema and a cool sounding android ap. Function wise the 373 seems like an awesome little 5.1 1080p AVR.

I have 2 questions though, first is "9 selectable subwoofer crossover frequencies" does anyone know what 9 frequencies you can choose are? Also, in another thread we was talking about the benefits of bass redirection to the LFE channel, can the 373 do bass redirection? (not crossover or cutoff, but redirection)

Thanks 10-Se I will give a try..I appreciate your time.

OBTW my Blue ray is sending pcm now..What is the diffrence between that and bitstream?

Cool... it sounds like that's what these wireless adapters do - pickup my network's wifi signal and allow me to tap a hard LAN off of it - pretty cool. I guess, the question now is - if I'm going to spend $50 or so on one of these... do I spend the extra on Apple TV or something? With a streaming BD player and networked receiver, I guess I don't really need one and the adapter can be used elsewhere for other equipment too. Thanks again for the info.

Is there a menu where I can set up the crossover frequency for specific speakers? I'm trying to drive more bass or lower frequencies to my fronts and the Extra Bass setting doesn't seem to do that much.

Also, how do you guys feel about the picture processing - is it worth using on 1080i or 720P to 1080P? And how do you set it to Auto or 1080P directly?

There's only a single crossover for all speakers set as SMALL on the 673.

The video processing in the 673 may not be as good as your TV, so it's probably not worth it.

Individual crossovers and better video processing start with the RX-A2020.

Okay

OK thanks... I will set the front to Large as they are CV VS120 with a deep 12" woofer and thump pretty good, and the rest to small. YPAO did alright, but I set it to YPAO front (YPAO had it at flat) as all others sounded odd.

As for the video processing - I'm mainly only using it for upscaling DVDs and possibly a Wii - I'll have to mess with it, as this is my first foray into AVR upscaling. There are soooo many options with video and sound that I have a lot of trial and error to go thru.

I will say that while the receiver is nice and I'm happy to have the reliability and quality of Yammy (my first), I might install the Onkyo TX-NR809 I have instead, as I prefer it I think. The only advantage of the V673 would be when I get that adapter for Airplay.

The 673 has an excellent graphic EQ built in. It took me a while to figure it out but it is the best I have ever seen. Only wish that it had more than 7 bands.
Thanks..It worked.
Can you share location of the EQ?

edit: found it, now to experiment with it

Can you help explain the EQ - it looks like I can adjust the level of frequencies coming from each speaker... if that is the case, I can then amp up the front bass frequencies, yes?

Thanks

Can you explain what better video processing is found in the RX-A2020?

Correct.

I hope someone can help me figure this out...

I have the rx-v673 with two hdmi inputs: HDMI 1 is audio only from my Oppo BDP-103 which is setup in Split A/V mode (video to Samsung PN60E7000 and audio to receiver). HDMI 2 is my Apple TV. I also have a Wii hooked up to TV component inputs with audio going back to receiver via ARC on HDMI. My issue is that when I select "watch a blu-ray" on my harmony one, everything does what it is supposed to at first, but then does something I don't want it to do.
The Oppo tuens on; TV turns on, sets to HDMI 1; Yamaha turns on, sets to HDMI 1; the receiver thinks that it should be in ARC mode and then switches from HDMI 1 to AV 4. This is what I don't want. I want the receiver to stay on HDMI 1.

Given my setup, what's the best way to fix this? FYI, I like using ARC because I will sometimes use the Smart TV features and want to have audio going through my receiver.

EDIT: Nevermind, I seem to have found something that might work here:
http://yavc.codeplex.com/

simply insert your receiver IP address to internet browser

The 2020 and 3020 have a different video processing chip (the specs on the Yamaha web site have more info). It produces a better looking result for inputs which need to be scaled and/or de-interlaced for your display, and it has more noise reduction and other processing options (and you have more control over this on the 3020 than the 2020).

For a clean 1080p image from a Blu-ray player you don't need it, but it could make a noticable difference with lower quality sources. How much of a difference would depend on how good the processing is in your TV, because you could use that for processing instead of the receiver.

I experienced similar issues with my Samsung plasma, so I disabled ARC and connected the TV to the AVR with an optical cable. Then the Harmony commands did exactly what I wanted them to, every single time.

That's what I was thinking I would have to do. Thanks for clearing it up.

Cool thanks. Am I correct that we have no access to settings like noise reduction or sharpening on the 673?

ARC is often more of a pain than a help.

Does anybody on this thread have experience using this receiver with a Tivo series 2 remote?

i.e. can it be programmed to control TV power and Receiver volume?

AFAIK the netgear router doesn't provide surge suppression, so you've got a direct line into your equipment via the ethernet cable. I bought tripp lite surge suppressors with the ethernet as well as the phone jacks on them for this purpose. Netgear goes into the wall outlet, then from the netgear to the surge suppressor, then to my BR player. They also make stand alone versions (APC PNET1GB ProtectNet Standalone Surge Protector for 10/100/1000 Base - T Ethernet Lines).
I do all my netflix/pandora through my BR player, so I don't need more than 1 connection.

It sure can. I don't recall which code it ended up being though.

This is a few weeks old but thought i would follow up with solution . i have a d link 655 router and it was filtering ports so you have to manually change it through the admin setting. Not east to figure out at all but here are the steps if anyone has issues with airplay . works fine now with any device
