So I'm a bit new to Plasma displays... loving this TV so far (65"), but noticed funkiness today.
Purple banding. These were present on a cable TV box feed over HDMI 3 and seemed less pronounced but were still visible when switching to a different input (HDMI 1, the cartoon pictures). Turning the TV off and on again seems to have taken care of the issue for the short term... is this one of those quirky things that happens with Plasmas and / or HDMI, or should I be thinking of contacting Panasonic over this?
you'd only be able to confirm this by looking up your current firmware version and comparing it against the version that had the fix (the exact number is somewhere in the vt50 settings thread)

I am running the blu-ray signal to a Denon with an Anchor Bay scaling chip. The signal is then passed through to the TV. Would this affect the 3:2 Pulldown being grayed out and would that apply to others who run the sugnal through a pre/pro or a receiver?

Click the info button on your VT50 and see what resolution it is receiving. If it is interlaced, i.e. 1080i, then it won't be greyed out. It is very possible that your receiver is processing the video if you believe it is coming out of your cable box at 1080i.
New VT50 owner here! I am running slides and I have to say.. even on THX Cinema it looks fantastic. No problems with my set so far.
However, I have a question:
I currently don't run my blu ray or anything through a receiver. When I play a bluray, say (Underworld Awakening 3D) I have black bars on the top and bottom. I went in the Bluray options and made sure it was set to 1.78 so I'm wondering if having a receiver makes a different. When I played Tron, some scenes didnt have the black bars, while others did. Is this just something we have to deal with? Maybe I'm just OCD about having IR or Burn in.
Does anyone know if there's a way to make the bars disappear, or perhaps having a receiver does it for you? When people say they upscale to 1080p how exactly does that work? I know my cable signal is set to 1080i so I'm wondering what happens.
Oh.. and I forgot to say thank you --- to everyone. I read hundreds of posts in this thread, and thanks to D-Nice! I'm currently going to get all set up using your recommended settings once I get my 100 hours in!

First you need to learn about movie aspect ratios.
If you don't want to distort the movies that you watch, then black bars are your friends. As long as you watch a variety of source material, you will not have IR that will interfere with your picture quality.
Your TV has an Aspect Ratio of 1.78 : 1 which means that the ratio between width and heigth of your screen is 16:9. Divide 16 by 9 and you get 1.78.
All HDTV is 16:9 unless they are broadcasting SD material. Movies come in all sizes. If the movie has a bigger aspect ratio, 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 are common, then you will have black bars top and bottom. The bigger the aspect ratio number, the bigger the black bars will be. If the aspect ratio is less than 1.78:1, 1.33 for instance, the black bars will be on each side. There is even a case from the past where you will see black bars on all four sides.
As you noticed there are a few movies that change aspect ratios during the movie. If you watch nothing but 1.33 or 2.35 movies for many months, then you might be able to see a difference in brightness in the black bar areas. As long as you watch a variety of material, you shouldn't have a problem. You need to be more careful with high contrast logos like ESPN, but even there variety in source material will save the day.
Thanks. I have the Denon set up to scale everything to 1080p.
Well there you go! If you set you Denon to pass through, you will get the 3:2 pulldown option. I let my Anthem upscale as well and therefore no 3:2 for me either.
Hi. I was wondering if anyone had a problem viewing 480i and 1080p content from a Directv HR34 satelite box? I cannot select 480i or 1080p on the Directv box as it states that my tv does not support it. Then when I try and go to either channel 100 or 200 to view Directv cinema, it states "Your TV does not support this program's content protection. Replacing the TV's HDMI cable with component cables will allow you to view the program." I am running the Directv box into a Denon AVR 4520CI receiver and on to the Panasonic TC-P65VT50 via HDMI cables, and it appears that this problem surfaced when I performed the latestest firmware update on the Panasonic. Everything was working great prior to that upgrade. Now, the only way I can get things to work temporarily is to 'soft' reset each piece of equipment by unplugging it for several seconds and then plugging it back in. That gets it to work for a day or two, but I keep having to do it in order to get things to work out. Also, when changing to certain non-3D channels, I get multiple images of the same picture and the tv asks me to push the 3D button to watch the 3D content. This image is completely unviewable and the only way I can restore the picture correctly is to turn off the Directv box and turn it back on. That then clears up that channel but then causes others to have the same issue when switching. This is very frustrating and I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with Directv/Panasonic/Denon HDMI handshake and copy protection issues?
I have DirecTV, an HR34, a Denon receiver, all HDMI, and a Panasonic VT50. Aside from the issue where the HR34 periodically won't allow for the Denon to display the on-screen GUI, I have none of the problems you are having.

I let my anthem do the upscale too thatt's why I don't have the 3:2. Now I can sleep better lol, I thought that there's something wrong with my vt
I am concerned about reflection. The set is used during the day and night with no Blu Ray. Just used for cable TV.
After looking at the pictures of the room in which the set will be I would really appreciate any comments as to whether or not reflections will be distracting?
I saw some others add some comments, keep in mind that LED's usually have a glossy screen now so the reflection will effect most LED's the same. An LED will helps some having a brighter picture, however not as much as I am sure you would like or need. The Panasonic's less money compared to its only rival in the LED market, a local dimming LED. Usually the Panasonic is still the clear choice even in a bright room. There are trade offs to everything, the price point makes the Panasonic the clear winner " overall ". I would get the VT50 to, as usually the GT is to close in price and the VT50 has to many more positive's to warrant a small savings.
I don't think anyone considering to buy an elite TV is worried about budgets so much. And his case with that amount of light he'd be crazy to consider plasma. Sure we have filters that are decent. But it's nothing compared to an LED.
As for glare or reflection. The only time that would be an issue is if you were to watch dark content during the day. Like the dark Knight or something. Otherwise it won't be an issue at all. Even then. You can still watch their content during the day on an LED. Not so much on a plasma
Just received my 65" VT50, November build. I am blown away by the picture. Coming from a ten year old Toshiba rear projector, probably not a surprise. No dead pixels, very uniform screen, no buzz on white slides at all. I'm not getting my TV stand for another week ... time for exercising my pixels with some slides.
I couldn't resist watching a little HD Netflix, and was very impressed. This is before changing any picture settings or basic adjustments. Can't wait to fire up my first Blu-ray one I get set up in the "theater" room.
Great forum and very valuable input for a new owner. Quick question on firmware/software updates. My vt50's been set up for a while and I initially had trouble connecting wireless to the internet - wasn't an issue because my Oppo was connected. I finally had some time yesterday to enter the settings manually and connect. I'm a few updates behind - I currently have 1.14 installed and 1.17 is showing as available. The question is this - can I just update to 1.17 or do I need to find 1.15 and 1.16 before doing this? Thanks, and apologies if this is already answered somewhere in the forum.

Yes you can update to 1.17, from whatever firmware that you now have.
This might be considered a little off topic. My wife and I have owned the P65VT50 for about 6 months and are thinking about switching from UVerse to DirecTV. Has anyone else with this set made the switch (going either direction) and noticed any change in PQ?

I was a uverse user then switched to directv and notice a improvement in PQ. For me i would go directv.
I'm hoping to order a VT soon, and am wondering if there is any consensus on which 3D glasses are best, especially for those (like me) that wear prescriptions glasses. Are the Panasonic glasses the way to go, or is there any alternative? I need only a pair or two, so I'm less concerned with cost than quality...
