I stopped judging my TV on anything other than BR material after I saw the INSANE banding during night scenes in Game of Thrones last year on Direct TV. It's just horrible what they do to programming sometimes.

Best Buy extended warranty?

For my 55VT50 the 2 year warranty would be $240. That would include burn-in.

Should I get it?

Lol You're making me feel better. I go through the same thoughts all the time with my Elite 70X5FD. EVERYTHING I watch on cable has flaws (at least from 7 feet or so) and it bugs the hell out of me. But when I put in The Dark Knight and look at the IMAX footage...AMAZING! Content like that totally spoils you for anything else. I know it's not possible but I keep thinking " why can't x look as good?!" Ah, we love such troubled lives.

I would. Best Buy has been very good of late honoring their warranties. Covering burn in is piece of mind if nothing else.

I often wonder if some of these issues will go away with calibration, but then I think the set will just more accurately display the flaws. Lol

New 65VT50 owner. Have already ran about 200 hours of slides for break-in. I have 7 "Picture modes" (Game, Custom, Vivid, Standard, Cinema, THX Cinema and THX Bright Room) although I've read in this thread others say they only have five. The THX Cinema looks the best by far coming out of the box.

I've just about read and searched this entire thread but want to make sure first, so my question is if I start messing with the Custom mode will it effect any of the other 6 modes?

Once I get my Denon 2313CI and Oppo BDP-103 I know I'm going to want to start tweaking!!

Mess with the Custom mode all you want as it will not affect the others.

It's definitely content and not the TV, as you can see similar lack of uniformity in backgrounds even on Blu-Rays. Sometimes it's film grain, and sometimes is just a less than stellar encode.

But, these things appear on any display that can resolve the pixels correctly. Part of the issue is that the VT50 does this well, and then it's a big TV (even the 55"), so individual pixels are big.

Something that might be the TV (or the calibration) are larger-than-a-couple-pixel areas of uniform non-linearity. By that, I mean 1/2" to 2" blocks that don't blend gradually into the next block. If the picture isn't otherwise low resolution, it's almost certainly calibration.

Agreed, high quality TV's, especially larger ones, bring out all the flaws in cable programming.

Hi. Expecting my 65vt50 on Monday. Woo hoo! Won't be able to see it in action until my renovations are done in three weeks...boo hoo. LOL

I've been scanning this thread but I can't seem to find the link to the always mentioned slides and initial procedures for this unit...I'd be interested in seeing it to see what I could do while I wait. I'll post pictures when everything is up and running...I think things are going to look awesome!

Thanks JSpectre88 and Robnix. I feel much better about it after your comments. Watched another BR (Flight) last night and PQ was great. Watched Survivor after and PQ was pretty good. Definitely hit or miss with the Directv programs/channels.

I'm watching Flight right now. Great flesh tones, nice contrasts and black levels.

How long is the power cord on the VT50 65"?

Does anyone know whether the VT50 has options to simply change NTSC to PAL so I can receive a satellite signal where I am? I don't want to use a converter if I don't have to. I am actually planning on getting a ZT but if it's possible to do that on the VT50 I am pretty sure you'll be able to do it on a ZT too.

Is this something that will cause me problems?

I know I'm a little late in replying here, but for what it's worth I have a Samsung region free DVD player at home so last night I tried to play several PAL discs on my new VT50. They all seemed to play OK.

Anyone had luck using the ARC output on the VT50? I've got a Samsung HW-E450 Soundbar and I can get any sound out.
^^^
Yup. ARC is working great for me for my OTA antenna. My HDMI goes from my Denon 3312CI MON1 --> Panny VT50 HDMI2 (ARC). My HDMI cable is a High Speed Monoprice cable w/ Redmere if that makes any difference.

I think they are 6 FT. They use a standard detachable power cord. You could buy a longer after market cord, just don't get a cheap one though. You want to make sure it is at the very least, the same gauge wire.

I'd judge it's about 5 to 6 feet long

I'm having a similar issue with my Panasonic Skype HD camera that is connected to my 65VT50.

It's likely that your player is outputting NTSC.

I have a lot of 25fps PAL content, but all of it gets output at 720p60 by my region-free upconverting DVD/media player, so the VT50 has no problem displaying it. Note that I can set the player to output 25fps or 50fps, but both result in the "no signal" message on the VT50.
I suspect that may be true, but as far as I know there is no way to tell what the TV is actually receiving, at least without some additional equipment.

If I have some time, when I get home from work, I think I'll take a closer look and see if I can play with some of the players output setting to see what shakes out.

ARC works fine on mine.

So they moved me, upgraded my hardware, and gave me another free DVR and this is all well after I already signed my new two year agreement two months earlier. I could not be a happier customer.

If you want an HR24, simply call and say the box keeps malfunctioning and you have tried all the resets and such. Or just tell them you want new hardware or you will leave. They are super easy to deal with. Call and if you dont like the tone of the person on the line, hang up and call right back unitl you get a nice person. It is very easy and never fails. They will send out a replacement and I do not think they are sending out anything older than HR24's now.

FYI The lag you speak of is gone. It was very bad but they upgraded all software on at least the HR24's and up and the lag is gone and the guides are very sharp.
Hmmmm-we ordered an additional hd dvr and was told they could not guarantee the model but they guaranteed it would be new and not used as well as taking $100 off the $200 price. I'm staring at the box that was just delivered and it's a old hr22-100. Here's the kicker it has a label on the box that says it's a refurbished model. We've been customers for 12 years! Unfortunately and I wish I was wrong but that negates everything you said above.

You can blame Directv if you want, but it's hit or miss with the broadcasts themselves. I have DirecTV and an OTA antenna. When I see something look off on a network broadcast, I often compare it to the OTA version and, well, it's 90% of the time in the source itself.

Now I see how you are into the LUT cubes so well. You make it look simple... I need some more quality play time on a VT. Thanks...
