Official Panasonic VT50 owners thread - Page 351

Hey everyone, just joined the forum. I'm proud to say I'm a new owner of the VT-50 and so far I'm very impressed, especially with the black levels. So I've decided to use D-nice break in slides and so far I'd say I'm about 45 hours in. The thing is I also have like maybe 7-10 hours of other content viewing, all of which was full screen. I really tried to just use the slides the first hundred hours but I just couldn't resist. Will I still be able to use his settings?

Sure you can, they just might be off ever so slightly. Then again, it's not an exact science to begin with.

My AV receiver of 3 years just went bad so it's time for a new one. I'd thought I go ahead and ask you guys for any recommendations on a new one. I would greatly appreciate it. cool.gif

For those who've run the D-nice slides, is it just me or do the "white" slides or pattern 4 and 12 to be exact not look white? When I open the file on my computer it looks very white and bright but on my VT-50 it looks more like a very light grey. Am I being a little too paranoid or is something up?

I hope this doesn't come as too much of a shock for you. That's the ABL.

Oh wow, truth be told I had no idea about this. I know plasma's can't get quite as bright as a LCD/LED but I didn't know it would dim the picture if it was so bright. I assume this isn't a problem with any real world viewing, correct?

The ABL can still trigger with real world viewing, but at the worst it's just keeping you from being blinded by unusually bright scenes. The picture can stay very bright overall and bright scenes should appear colorful and natural. Even watching a hockey game only dims the screen very slightly, but there's ways to offset that like making the temperature slightly cooler. All in all it shouldn't have a negative impact on you, but some people can't live with out eye searing whites. If the overall screen percentage isn't too bright, whites will look perfectly bright and normal.

Yeh just google "dnice reference settings" and it should be the second link with the 2012 Panasonics. He has both 2D and 3D settings listed there.

I watch most of my movies with subtitles. Can subtitles cause IR?

No, I bought the GT50 in early August.. I just got the VT50 for another room.. I'm kind of addicted to "pawn stars" on the history channel.. I have defintely never left it on for days, or
even for several hours.. I am not sure if the "H" is going to be permanent, but so far its been a few weeks and I have been steering clear of the History channel and i tried running the
built in wiper, to no avail! Its not that bad,, you hardly ever see the "H", only when there;s a very bright random scene, and you have to be looking for it, to see it..

My wife watches hgtv over 4 hrs per day. Even running the scroll bar I can't detect any ir after 60 days. Even if I could I probably wouldn't mind since its just the scroll bar after all. Some sets are just more susceptible?

dnice says use custom for his 3D settings also. If I'm using custom for the 2D settings, what should I use for 3D?

The modes for 2D and 3D each have their own settings. Just hit 3D button to play around with the 3D settings.

Is ARC the only way to get audio back to a receiver when watching VIERA media from the VT50? I have an Onkyo SR-TX606 Receiver that supports 1.3a HDMI, but not 1.4 so it won't have ARC support. Is there any other way I can configure the two devices so that I can watch Netflix through the VT50? I also have a Sony 590 Bluray player so my backup plan is to just watch Netflix through that if I need to, just would be nice to do it straight from the TV.

Isn't there a optical out?
Or use hdmi 2 as the OUT from the tv to the receiver and use a different hdmi as the input

Didn't you just post this in the Settings Thread? I believe that is the proper place for it. No need to double-post.

If you've read my posts, getting a non-issue free TV can be like picking from a box-of-chocolates (feel free to search for my posts to see what I mean as I don't have many posts due to being a new owner).

I bought from Best Buy simply due to the sale they had at the time, but in the end, I ended up being more glad about their no-hassle return/exchange policy as I was not happy with either of the first two sets I received. I haven't had to use Amazon's return system yet for other purchases I've made through them so I can't comment on how easy that might be for you. Although, regarding the delivery and set up, I am a little surprised that the guy didn't have the tools on him to perform the setup. My first delivery included a dropped TV (2-4 inches, but still) and my second included a guy turning on the TV to check if it worked despite it being very cold. They did send two guys both times though so not sure why they'd send one for such a large TV. The third time was the charm for me as the deliver guys simply slid the new TV onto the old already-built stand from the 2nd TV and even wrote down on their forms that they didn't turn it on to check it because it was too cold. I specifically warned the 3rd guys about what the previous guys did and they were very careful with the 3rd set.

Since I tested and inspected all three TV's fairly thoroughly, I can tell you that the audible level of buzzing that could be heard from each differed noticeably. I simply tested this by slowly moving away from each TV until I could no longer hear it. That may not be very "scientific", but it was good enough for me. The third set I received (and which I intend to keep) has a much less pronounced buzz.

It sounds like your buzzing is actually much worse than any of the three that were delivered to me in the past couple of months. I actually didn't return those for the buzzing even though their buzzes were worse than my current TV (the first had a dead pixel and was dropped and the second had an excited pixel and sometimes "blacked out" for a second or two). All three TVs had a November 2012 date and had the 1.17 firmware though.

I did use the instructions people posted in this thread to check the hours and number of times the TV had been turned on in the service menu to verify the TV was actually brand new (although this was obvious from the fact that the 3rd TV prompted me to set it up whereas neither of the previous two TVs did that). You may want to check to see if Amazon sends out TV's that are were not accepted or minimally used like Best Buy did with me by checking that yourself.

It did give me a certain peace of mind knowing this TV is truly "my" TV and I absolutely love it now and have no regrets purchasing it. While I was certainly frustrated with the fact that I had to get the TV shipped 3 times before I was satisfied, I am more than happy with my decision for choosing this TV now. Once you prep it and calibrate it, it has an incredible picture. I personally think you may wish to exchange the TV you received and get another until you're happy. Then I believe you and your wife will truly be satisfied with your purchase. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

Sorry for the novel!

Actually, thank you for the novel! It made me feel a bit better. I decided to go for another spin of the panel lottery and asked Amazon for a replacement. It should be here a week from today. Interestingly, while my current set was delivered by CEVA, the replacement will be delivered by Pilot. I wonder how Amazon decides which delivery service to engage. Pilot made it very clear that they won't install the stand, which CEVA was willing to do when I provided the screwdriver. Anyway, here's hoping the replacement is relatively quiet. The buzzing on the current set is so loud I've gone back to watching my old TV! I do not understand how Panasonic lets things roll off the assembly line this way.

Do you live at a higher altitude? Also, if you do hear it again, try unpluggin everything on the circuit your tv is connected to and then listening for it. I've heard that some lights/appliances can be plugged into the same circuit that can increase the 'buzz' on plasma televisions. From hearing everyones anecdotes I think this may be true, because it always seems like the same person with the problem has had the problem with other tv's as well. I don't buy that its hearing related, since I have very good ears still myself.

You should hear a slight sound during bright screens with sound muted, but you should not hear it with even minimal tv volume on.

Odd, that link takes you to a "slide show" tutorial, on audio settings, but says to use the "HDMI #1" port for ARC, but the manual as well as what folks here say, the ONLY port on the VT50 for ARC, is HDMI #2. Most likely this page was created a while ago, just wanted to point that out, in case you are trying to get ARC working. My now OLD, Onkyo 906 does not have ARC, so I'm using the optical path.

Yes, you are confusing the two. The motion smoother will get rid of the film grain you're going to see in a lot of blurays, and it will add the herky jerkiness you see during fast motion scenes.
