Another irrelevant observation is about my first experiences with HD TV. I got Dish satellite which has respectable HD signals, but I can see a difference between Dish and off air signals. Off air is clearly better.

That is some serious WRF (Wife Rejection Factor). Did you anticipate this or were you surprised at her reaction?

Depending on where you are located off air can have twice the bandwidth of most satellite feeds and even some cable providers.

Hey guys. Noobie here. Background: Love watching movies and being immersed in picture and sound. Have slight OCD and need to have the best of the best hense my top of the line oppo, my onkyo receiver, my emotiva amp, my high end paradigm speakers, high end cables and lastly the panasonic. Unfortunately my wife is not on board with all of this and last year she only approved me to get the 55GT30. Drove me a little nuts just to know there was a better panasonic line to get a better picture! Gods have now worked in my favor though and after 14 months, there is an issue with the 55GT30 and the warranty company has cut me a check! Already purchased one of the last 55VT50's in the area at a great price and going to pick it up today!! The clouds have opened and the angels are singing!!!!!!!! (If anyone mentions a new WT or ZT model, I will find you and punch you in the throat)! Anyways.......I'm a stay at home dad and we watch cartoons in the morning typically, I watch the gamut during nap times, and it's usually prime time, Discovery channel/animal planet at night via directv and usually evenings for the Blu ray to fire up when new movies arrive. I have always just left the tv in thx mode and gave it a slight tweak for liking and that is where it has stayed. Unfortunately after searching, I cannot get a calibrator here for the VT50 until at least June since I'm in BFE Wisconsin! In the meantime, I will be running Dnice's slides until Saturday (24 hrs a day hours straight) and applying his settings that I found in the other forum. I just signed up for that site and can't post there yet. My question is: Are his reference settings for everyday/everything viewing and movies or is that for specific content? Next question is that he has also listed some custom 3D settings. MY GT30 only had one custom mode. Is there more than one custom mode on the VT50 OR do I have to plug all those values in if I want to watch a 3D movie, then change it all back when done?? That seems like a pain! Unless there is a mode to plug into for the 3d content and have it separate from the 2d content settings?? Thanks in advance. Sorry so long, but find that as much info as possible generally helps.biggrin.gif

Its good to see you have your priorities straight. biggrin.gif
Its pretty common that OTA will look better than cable. That is also my case.

His settings are for any and all content. There is a Custom and 3d Custom mode. You have to be in 3d mode to access the Custom 3d mode.

ahhhhh. gotcha. I can more than likely go in and set that once I have 3d content playing correct.

thank you.

Running the break-in slides after my VT50 arrived today. What settings should I set the TV too? I saw a post and then lost it. Is brighter better?

That was a big part of my thinking was if I could get one of the best TV's out there I should since I don't upgrade all that much. I could really tell from my friend's ST30 how much I was missing so I'm really excited to get my hands on this VT50! I'm getting it in on Thursday so I took off Friday and I should have a good weekend of setup and movies!

That's good to know it seems pretty sensible. Since so much of my viewing would be done by 1/2 people this just seemed to make a lot of sense to me and for some reason it didn't even occur to me until I read it. I do have a lot to catch up on though I spent most of my time following the ST threads and the 2013 anticipation thread so I have a lot of catching up to do.
Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to try a pair on before I make a move on them. That doesn't turn out to be such a good deal if they aren't comfortable. Especially since the only time people would be wearing them is for significant amounts of time watching movies. I'm also considering waiting for the 2013 glasses to see if there are any improvements. Since they went to that standard for 3D glasses they should work with the 2012 sets as well I would think. It's also getting pretty hard to find new 2012 glasses anyway.

Hi Karn - I use those Samsung glasses as cheapos for my guests. My wife likes to use them though over our panasonic ones, which is weird to me.

The rudeness is uncalled for, he was simply stating an alternative solution to your question. One that actually makes more sense than a pixel flipper. You bought this tv to watch actual content on, right? Simply mixing up your viewing instead of running a scrolling bar or pixel flipper is not only going to give you the same results, its much more fun than staring at said "ir removers". Sheesh.smile.gif

You don't have to have 3D content playing. Just press the 3D button, then the Menu button. It will say "Picture 3D"

I think that the TV could not get damaged, but You can mess up picture badly.
I can only speak for EU models, but as all other codes were the same for US models so far, this should work too.
Turn TV on, press "V-" button on the TV, keep pressed, and press the "info" button on the remote at the same time until the TV will perform a self test. After the self test turn off the TV using the power button of the TV. Wait a few second and turn on the TV. Now all settings including service menu should have default values.

try on You own risk.

good luck!

unfortunately the tv does nothing when trying to achieve this. any other thoughts? I was able to set up an exchange a few days outside of the exchange period but I am afraid I wont get as good of a unit or a unit with cosmetic defects. Should I keep the current unit or proceed with the exchange?

You have to press the info button three times. Unless you know what you are doing, I would leave the service menu alone (unless you are just checking the hours).

I believe he was describing something different from just getting into the service menu, hence is "holding" the Info button versus pressing three times. I could be wrong however...this is the first I've heard of this master reset.

I found the solution for the reset, you hold Vol- on the TV and the OK button on the remote to bring up the self check, then you hold the power button on the TV to cycle the power. Now I have a question regarding cycles on the TV. When checking settings in the service menu there was some instances where I had to power the unit on and off a few times in close succession to check variables on different sources etc. waiting only a few seconds between power on and power off. Can powering the unit on and off in close cycles (approximately 10-15 times over the corse of the unit's life thus far) cause damage? If so what would this damage be? Should I keep the TV I have with some close cycles of powering on and off and not worry about what has passed or should I opt for the exchange?

Personally (although I'm no electrical engineer), I doubt that powering the unit on and off as you have would have any deleterious effects upon the TV. If it did, you'd likely have every parent of every 3 year old kid returning their TVs. wink.gif

It appears as though you've reset the factory settings in the service menu according to the posts I've read thus far. Therefore, those can't be screwed up any longer. So unless you have physical problems like dead, excited, or stuck pixels or a very loud buzzing TV, I'd be extremely cautious about returning your TV at this point - the stock is low and you're not sure you're going to get a better unit. If the only problem you're worried about are turning the TV on and off quickly 15 times at this point, I don't think you should be worried at all.

Just my two cents though.

I am in the process of shopping around for this set. Do you guys think that at this point I should wait for a price drop with the upcoming VT60?
Awesome, thank you for your response, you raise all very valid points. My TV does buzz some but it seems to be only on very bright screens, is that normal?

Also can powering the unit on and off to check setting retention in the service menu do damage? I am worried because over the course of about 20 minutes I powered the unit on and off about 5-10 times trying to check if any changes were retained. Does accessing the service menu void the warranty and could someone please provide the default contrast values in the service menu for THX Cinema? Can settings in the service menu do damage to the unit if it is still in its break in period? Thanks again in advance, you guys are my best resource to learning the ins and outs of this unit. I am worried sick about damaging this TV and as of today I think it is outside of its exchange period. The TV only has 61 hours on it and has been powered on 49 times. Is this bad? Also could with that few of hours could a change to the contrast do damage? The contrast is the only variable i could have possibly edited, can this corrupt the firmware? Sorry about the sporadic nature of this post but I am incredibly stressed and worried as stated before and just need some feedback to put me at ease.

What are you doing to that poor tv and why?

It is normal if you have good hearing. I went through 3 different sets (for reasons other than buzz) and they all had different audible levels of "buzz" from my testing (which was simply displaying the brightest white prep slide and measuring how far away I could hear the buzz). The brighter the color, the louder the buzz. Still, unless the buzz is so loud that you can hear it over normal TV/movie dialogue/sound, you don't have a problem. None of my three sets were that loud with their buzzing really, but if you leave them on a solid screen of one color without any other sound, you'll definitely hear some buzz. I wouldn't worry about it if you haven't noticed it during normal viewing.

The VT50 is a great bargain now so if your bank account can't afford the higher prices of a new set, you may want to consider grabbing one if you see a steal. I don't know how long they take before they start discounting new TVs, but I imagine you won't see significant bargains until at least Black Friday. Perhaps someone with more experience in this area can chime in here.

I meant should I grab one now, or wait until the newer models come out, in hopes it will drop the price of the VT50 significantly?

Ah sorry about that. You could try that but you risk not finding a VT50 at all if you do that. From what people have been posting, some of which work in stores which sell the VT50, supply is drying up rather quickly. Worst case scenario is you just pay more for a newer model which isn't the end of the world I suppose. I'm not sure how much more the VT50's will drop in price and how much you might save if that scenario did happen. The one thing I'd be concerned about by getting one of the very last VT50's out there is possibly getting a lemon and not having a replacement in stock. :/ I'd be curious to hear what others have to say about this.

That happened to me with an Onkyo Receiver back around 08, and Circuit City replaced it with the newer model. Not sure if I got lucky though lol.

From all indications, at least the 65VT50 is down to a few right now. The Big River only has "used" sets, and many other online vendors are out.

Your best bet is one of the forum sponsors here (Cleveland). I wished I had checked with Chris before I ordered mine from PTV. I was looking at a ST50, but couldn't pass up the deal at the time. It's supposed to be delivered tomorrow, but that's a total of 20 days from when I ordered it (2/21), and 16 days when the shipping company picked it up from their store just 4 hours drive to mine. frown.gif

I'm nervous about it getting here finally, and it being a defective or broken unit since it spent all that time on the road. Worse of all, they don't seem to have any more stock to replace it if it does arrive broken.

IMHO, the big improvement in the panels occurred last year (2011 -> 2012). All early indications are that the VT60 will be minimally improved on the VT50 panel-wise. I think any "significant" improvement will be on the ZT60. So yeah--if you can afford a VT50, there is no better time to get them.
Ok thanks! I forgot to mention I am shopping around for the 55" version. Abe's has it in stock with free shipping for $1618, I just have to look up some reviews of that shop. I guess I probably won't get the opportunity to snag it for $1500 :/
