I've yet to see a vt50 in action, but it looks like panasonic is really on their game this year. If I finally give in to going up in size from my 500m, the GT and VT would be the first panels I'd consider. You know I have to ask are you any closer to coming to Saint Louis?

You should check it out, it's pretty impressive set.

Sorry but I have to disagree with this. The 2012 Panasonics are no cooler than an 111FD, 151FD, 500M, 600M, 141FD, 101FD, 5020FD or 6020FD. In a small room, both brands will increase the room temp. In a larger room neither has any real impact.

On the same note, only serious videophiles would be interested in a VT50 compared to a ST50. Kuros and VT50s are preferred by the same type of individual. The only different would be what takes priority.... PQ or features.

All Good points D. Maybe my 5020 had defective fans or something as it ran way hotter than this vt50.

I get full surround on everything I use arc for but I will most likely use my ps3 for that kind of stuff so it really is not worth keeping on the list.

But I fully agree with you in regards to PQ. My point is that if shopping for a new set, the average Joe may not be able to discern the difference like you can. The divide has been closed substantially at an rate. But I would still consider the kuro the reference set.

Always good to hear your input D.

Good point. My 5020 was an elite (converted). So it was identical to a 111fd in every sense minus a light sensor in the back.

I have to say I am surprised about peoples experience with black level performance with the vt50. I can't say enough about it. Once I got it dialed in as best I could without d-nice settings yet, I was extremely happy. I was left a bit wanting with the vt30 which is why it hit the road. Either way, we are talking about some excellent sets here that anyone should be happy to own.

How difficult is it to install the stand for the 65VT50? How many people are needed - 2 or 3? Also, are there handles on the back of the TV to help with the installation and move to an AV cabinet?

I reviewed the quick setup instructions and they were not very detailed and I just want to ensure I have eveything I need when I setup the TV. Any best practices would be greatly appreciated. I assume I need to keep the panel upright at all times, but it would seem to be very difficult to align the TV to the stand if you lower the TV onto the bracket.

Thanks

Thanks for the information. I don't have an interest in 3D, but I'm happy that there are fairly good alternatives if the Kuro has a fatal experience of some kind. I'm sure you, UMR or several others can make the VT50 displays look very good. Given the difference in bezel size, I don't think my wife would notice that a new VT50 has 17% more viewing area. I probably wouldn't either.

We did mine with 2 people. There are no handles.

So, Friday morning I had posted that there was no ETA as to delivery of my 65VT50 preorder from my dealers distributor. This must have jinxed things in a positive way because I received a text at the turn on the golf course that it would be delivered late Friday. PQ was great right of the box in THX Bright Room. Not too much time yet on this holiday weekend for viewing, but I am real happy that I have now been able to relegate my 58V10 to a secondary location.

Congrats man. Let us know the dealio when you have had time to check it out.

Nick did you change any settings before running the slides from D-nice?

If so, would you share them with me? My 65vt50 comes next week

what are the most affordable glasses and best place to get them for the VT-50?

I just bought a pair of the official Panasonic glasses from BB, for in-store pick up for $79 each. About to go pick them up now. I see Amazon has them for $52 each but BB's policy states they won't price match an online-only retailer. It's alright, you always pay a premium when you want something now lol

I have a 60GT50 btw but it's the same thing

Cnet just did a terrific review/direct comparison of the Panasonic and Samsung glasses. Basically, the Panasonics are more comfortable, rechargeable, better build quality, and block ambient light. But they are more expensive than the $20 Samsung 4100 glasses. The recommendation is to buy the Panasonics for mom&dad/regular viewing and the Samsungs for kids&guests or if you are just looking to try 3d out

80.00 + tax is pricey when you need 4 pair I have Samsung SSG 3050GB 2 pair I could try and then get 2 Panasonic from Amazon. What was the model number for the ones you are referring to? Thanks,

The 3050GB won't work on the 2012 model panny's. The newer SSG 4100GB's will.

Haha, screw the guests. You can wear the nice glasses while they're wearing the not so nice ones...

Any owners finding and green tint or what some people call green blobs on your sets?

That's good news, Im getting nervous while I'm waiting for my vt, I've had problems in the past, I went through 3 vt20 dead pixels and banding problems, I had no probs with my vt30 but my rental gt50 looks like it may have a bit of a greenish look to white and grey screens and it does buzz alot, but that might have to do with my wall mount making it sound louder then it is.

Hmmm .... I have watched 3 different wall mounted 65GT50s for ~3h each and even with my ears up to the screen I haven't yet heard any buzzing. I'm going to follow your lead and have Future Shop deliver me a 65GT50 while I wait for them to sort out the delivery chaos surrounding the 65VT50. I am not planning to wall mount it so I will report back on any buzzing I find (or don't).

Tint in gray/white can be easily fixed with a calibration. This just means that green is tracking a little high or red is tracking too low.

Yes the bigger bezel on the Kuro vs vt50 is really nice, and is one of the kuro features I will miss.

imo, it really comes down to 3D vs MPEG 2 (videos, movies). imo my Kuro 141 is better at displaying DVD's/music videos (MPEG 2) than my 65VT50, and as we all know the Kuro can't play 3D. I have never had my 141 hooked up to cable so I can't say about streaming or live TV.
As far as PQ goes with Blu Ray HD, its a toss-up and just what you the viewer like best, they both are really very good at HD (1080P).

As far as the group you have placed me in, let me remind everybody that UMR did beat me, but non the less I am very faltered with your comparison.
And I should add that D-Nice said he will stop by my house (as UMR did) the end of June to help me with getting a handle on 3D calibration.

On a side note, I would discourage any of us end user's to spend the money and time to become a DIY calibrator. Unless you just what a hobby.

You should be. Both UMR and D-Nice are special.

I can't speak for anyone but myself. I've seen UMR and D-Nice work, and it would never occur to me to try that myself.

Cheers.

I here this thing buzz from 9 feet back no problem even on normal content that's not super bright. At least it's just a loaner, I just hope my vt is quieter. Let me know how you set its, the picture quality is amazing.

I have heard no buzzing on my 65VT50. I watched THX Cinema mode for a day or so, and then I used wmwilker's settings from the VT50 settings thread (the first settings he posted, not the bright settings he posted after...). I find, until properly calibrated, that these settings are quite good.

No green tint....no buzzing....and the slim black bezel and letter boxing merged indistinguishable during Haywire, the first movie we viewed in 2.40:1 aspect last evening. Pretty good flix on a very good monitor.
Get my 65VT50 tomorrow,can't wait.
I've used my new 65VT50 for a few days after running 100 hours of slides and just though I'd respond to various concerns out there. Not an expert on these things. Using THX Cinema so far.

ARC seems to work OK with Onkyo TX-NR708. On receiver says getting Dolby Digital signal from TV antenna input via HDMI 2. Wouldn't that be the test? Note that on VT30 ARC was via HDMI 1.

Only very slight noticeable buzz on high contrast, bright screen, i.e., running slides. On real-world material, usually only hear buzz if put ear right over circuit board above HDMI inputs. Slight fan noise exists but only if behind TV. Not an issue on either. Might be worse if wall mounted.

DSE-I watched a bit of ice hockey, didn't notice anything amiss but not certain what to look for. Saw a few flickers, but think those were camera flashes upon rewinding DVR. Minimal or non-existent IR. If some, disappears in a minute or two.

With Blu-ray, no flicker observed with 60Hz or 96Hz. No green blobs or banding although I have no experience with those artifacts. No dead pixels observed running slides. This is my first plasma, so no reference, but it can noticeably heat up the small room. Haven't tried 3D yet. I like the chrome edge trim on the VT30 better than the VT50 but it's not a big deal.

While apparently some people here seem to have various problems, one must remember the complaints here are probably not statistically valid. If you look at the product complaints on any forum, you would never buy anything. You will find forum complaints on everything from iPhones to Toyota Camrys but most people live reasonably trouble-free or these products wouldn't be so popular.
