Received my 65VT50 from Amazon this afternoon.
Thought it unusual for it to not have a plastic film on the front.
Do they normally come with that plastic film????
Flicker in bright scenes/objects
flicker in pans sometimes, depends on the material
floating brightness in darker details (brightness pops, very fast, but they're there and distracting)
?
The VT's image seems to be pretty unstable during certain scenes in my experience so far. I've seen it on every VT I've checked out, so I know it's not my panel.
The picture is nothing short of beautiful when your not hitting one of these quirks though. Edited by SiGGy - 6/14/12 at 4:14pm
plasma - but it's just as annoying on my 25 yr old CRT
Interesting. It was not even noticeable on my older TV. Is that just because it was so dim? That's going to be a mystery until I can go to a store and watch some hoops.
I only own the vt50. With that said, at normal listening levels you should not hear anything you do not want to. And filter on VT is the best of the three.
Filter? Filter for noise or glare? At this point, I'm willing to spend more money to get a TV that I can actually watch and not have it annoy me or make me sick. My thought, anyway, is to buy it with my Visa card that doubles Warranty - making it a 2 yr warranty...then getting the 3 yr Square Trade warranty on top of that. I know plasma's do have a habit of breaking down more than LEDs - but with the 5 yrs of warranty I'm not as worried about it.
but am I the only one noticing...

See, this is what gives me pause to pluck down $3k. Aren't there ANY TV's that don't have major issues??? Damn!

That broadcast was the worst in terms of frequency of the strobes of anything I think I've seen, hockey or hoops.
I was on the fence also, just loved the picture on the VT50 but also really wanted a large tv.
I went with the Sharp 80le844 - size won
Once you get it home, and move away from direct comparisons, I usually don't find as many faults
I did the same thing for the time being, now if there was a TC-P80VT50, I would be all about that !!

Hey Chris, I'm looking to move to a 65" Plasma. If I decided the VT-50 was a little too expensive, in your expert opinion what would be the next best model for me to go for? GT? ST? UT? VT-30?
My primary concerns are as follows: 1) No unwanted noise/buzz coming from the TV, 2) Smooth picture with the least amount of blurring/framing in fast motion sequences (i.e. Halo), 3) Least amount of glare possible after #1 and #2 have been taken into consideration. I want a good PQ obviously, but it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect. The unwanted, irritating issues I listed above are more important to me to NOT have. Thanks for your help Chris.

I've not had any of those issues. I do notice a bit of flicker on very bright scenes using 96Hz for 24p Blu-Ray playback, but no fluctuating brightness at all. It is also worth noting that I came from a VT25 that had floating blacks and I have put on material that fluctuated with the old TV and get no fluctuation with the VT50. Even when watching programming that I didn't watch with my 25, I find myself thinking, "the VT25 would have floated blacks just then."

It sounds like the VT30. I think you should exchange it.

I see the flicker you are describing for sure, really frustrating. I see plenty of flicker when the image is a dark scene and there is some lighting from lamps or other fixtures those lights flicker like crazy on the vt50, never seen anything like it.
Forgive me if this has already been asked/discussed, but can someone tell me when the 2013 VTs will be released? If so, what the chances are of seeing a 75" or larger set will be? I'm very interested in the set, but at my viewing distance 65" is just too small.

So far, I haven't noticed any of the problems he mentioned. But I only watch blu-rays and DVD. Maybe it's other source material where the problem resides.
Or apparently, we haven't watched the same movies.

I will be using it for the following: 1) HD Cable TV, 2) Blu Ray/DVD, 3) XBox 360. I won't be using it for any apps or weird type of files - just the basics.

How hot does the 65 inch vt get. When I was looking at best buy they had a 65 inch Samsung plasma that I could feel the heat from it standing three feet from it. I looked at a 55 inch st Panasonic plasma and it was just barely warm.
EDIT: I've found a potential deal breaker
I fired up Game 1 of the NBA Finals, which we missed the other day because we both had work stuff. I'm find whatever is going on with the arena strobes completely unacceptable. Even though arena-based sports are a very small percentage of what we watch, this is not good. As in: If this is as irritating by Game 3, I struggle to imagine tolerating it.
It's worth noting that I've had a plasma in my living room for 6 years and have never noticed this as a problem before. So what's going on there that's making this so irritating? The new set is brighter, yes... But it surely has more aggressive power-saving circuitry and perhaps a more aggressive ABL? Looking for insight here.
If it bothers you, then what you may need is specified settings for that type of source materiel.
The VT50 can be very accurate, but to achieve that level accuracy you need precise and stable settings.

I've played with them for awhile and I can't see anything substantial.
No help with good source materiel, but ok with poor source materiel.

OK, so I watched Game 2 tonight and didn't find the strobes nearly as irritating. I still want to see what a game looks like on a modern LCD for comparison, but I'm less worried about this now.
Hey guy's Sears got the Panasonic TC-P65VT50 on sale for 2,999.
Thanks man!!! I just got back from BB and got another $200 price match refund!!! WOOT WOOT Since the TV was now under $3K I also got a $100 refund on the 4yr black tie warranty!
Purchased @ BB for $3,499, last week BB sale price $3,199 this week sears sale price $2,999 all in a two week period! Along with the $100 cheaper black tie warranty that's $600 saved!!! I love this forum!!!
At this rate perhaps the TV will get down to $2,700!

On other threads there have been reports that they see it on their older sets too. Would it be possible to check out your recording on another tv?

Can someone find a movie and scene or show that might be on VOD or something so that I can check?
I have noticed buzzing on my 55" VT. I was behind it yesterday switching out some cables and it was pretty noticeable. Mind you I was behind the panel and right next to it. It doesn't bother me when I'm sitting/watching it.
I've noticed slight flicker in bright areas in 96Hz mode after watching more content (initially, I didn't see any). Not a dealbreaker to me. I like the way motion is rendered using 96Hz mode and the flicker is so minimal that it doesn't bug me. You want real flicker, switch over to 48Hz, lol.
I've never noticed any brightness fluctuations/pumping, or strobing during basketball. I've also watched extensively for floating blacks, even used content that my old G20 floated with, and the VT50's been fine in that regard.
One thing I noticed is the supplied stand won't work with our setup that well. I plan to wall mount it. Thoughts? Has anyone wall mounted at 65 before? What wall mount will work exceptionally well with my 65VT50?
after a big adventure with sammy d6000 and d8000 (clouding backlight etc.)i am thinking of getting 55 vt50 here in Turkey but it hasnt arrived yet. i hope this tv doesnt make me sad
