Yes both me and Robert were amazed looking at the XBR950 ONLY in comparison to a preconceived notion built up about it from a "spec" view point. Like you pointed out.

Honestly, I believe I see blacker blacks and whiter whites (one extreme to the other) on the 950 than the VT50... without the contrast specs that the VT50 has, tell me how that is possible ?

BUT the VT50 presents the picture slightly better, yes. It looks slightly more rich and has a depth to it, like I could reach into the tv with my eyes. The 950 does not present this. But oddly enough visually it doesn't seem like contrast is the problem to it... though it may be, it just doesn't "look" that way. As I pointed out, I almost blame it not looking as good because it gets more black and more white than the VT50.

Again, I am no professional, nor do I claim to be. I am just pointing out the perception of what I see. Though my calibrator was one of the top in the industry, and he mentioned being surprised about the Sony as well.

Joel, the XBR950 uses a Dynamic Contrast to make up for its inherent lack of contrast ratio. From rereading your original post it seems like a lot of pro calibrators would be surprised at your results and even told you so? I've not heard of ISF/THX calibrators using the dynamic features in their calibrations since they significantly reduce the fidelity of the screen reproduction and color accuracy, although at times they do work nicely on their lower levels. Who was your calibrator?

Another thing I noticed in your post is that you have observed greater input lag in the plasma over the LCD?

You definitely have one of the more unique experiences I've ever heard of. Thanks for sharing.

Yea, it was a shocker, I think mainly cause most try to judge the 950 like the 929 or previous models, and then once they get it calibrated, they/we are very surprised. Definitely no "dynamic contrast" turned on. (if thats what you meant). I always had that off. It never has been turned on. Now if you meant Sony uses a thing called "dynamic contrast" within the tv as a uncontrollable thing from consumers, then, I guess I have no control over that, and yes, then it is being used. As my post says, my calibrator was/is Robert Busch. As the review says, man, he is awesome ! Definitely highly recommended if your in the greater Bay Area.

I don't think I'm alone on this one or it is as rare as you think. It's just a 950 vs the older "expected" models I think. Since its so new still, it is just now beginning to show situations like this. Maybe ? IDK.

Again, I am not here to say the XBR950 is the best TV. I actually am not saying that at all, but rather the VT50 is the best TV IMO.... The point was that I and my calibrator were very SURPRISED at how well the XBR950 looked after its so simple non-ISF calibration. And how CLOSELY it resembled the VT50. It was just unexpected is all.

Since this is a VT50 thread though, I really don't feel comfortable talking so much about the XBR950. I just was told to share my experience with both tvs on both threads to give everyone as much info as possible.

Well I bought a 65 incher at BB yesterday and I got the 2 year extended warranty. Currently i have a 10 year old Sony KF-50XBR800 rp lcd. I am kinda scared about burn in being i sometimes game for an entire day, but that is why I went ahead and got the 2 year warranty that covers burn in.
So my plan is to use the tv like I stole it and if it burns so be it, they will be fixing it. If I don't see any burn in or IR issues within the first 3 weeks i will probaly return the BB warranty and just get a ST warranty for cheaper. That's my plan for my new purchase! biggrin.gif

Once again, who was the top calibrator of you're two displays? His advice and experience would be invaluable to all of us.

Robert Busch - thanks I missed that earlier.

If you take a new VT50 and play a game on it for a full day, you will probably have serious image retention. Many heavy duty gamers claim they don't get IR, but I don't know how many of them start right out of the box with long gaming sessions.

It's no wonder BB is having financial difficulty wink.gif.

That pan shows 24fps film issues so well because of the alternating dark/light window/wall columns, and the somewhat darker building just around the corner in the background.

At about the time the first clown is offscreen up the steps (and the other two are directly below the dark/light bands), the pan is moving at a speed such that each successive frame is a movement of one "band". This causes your eyes to see it as if the dark and light are swapping places, and the contrast changes just can't be followed well by your brain.

It takes at least the "Medium" setting on the VT50 Motion Smoother for this effect to be hidden. I have it set to "Weak" on the connection for my media player, but now I might give it an extended test at "Medium".

This might be just one for the "wish list", but has anyone found a discrete code to kick on the IR Scrolling Bar feature? I would love to be able to quickly turn that on between movies or during commercials. Out of the box it takes 13 keystrokes to get there.

Thanks

It's in the back of the TV. There is a fairly large label in the center with the model number, serial number and the date of manufacture.

I know it sounds cruel to do, but I didn't spend that kind of money to baby the thing, I want to use it. I'll try to be nice smile.gif, but I'm not going to change how I use a tv

By the way thanks for the links in your Sig, they will come in handy..

Ya that would be really awesome!

Finally joined the club as I took delivery of my set this morning. Trying to setup the slides for the break-in but I am having a problem. Even though I have nothing on the USB drive other than the break-in slides, the VT50 shows an additional 18 files which are not readable. This causes an issue when I am playing the slides. Whenever it reaches these "unreadable" files, the screen goes blank and displays a box in the middle of the screen that says "cannot read file". I have tried with 2 other SD cards and same result. What am I doing wrong and how do I get rid of these ghost files?

Have you tried reformatting the USB card to make it clean? A lot of them come with utility files and such. I usually just delete everything on the card/thumbdrive. Should work fine.

So the Best Buy delivery men showed up with my second 55VT50 this week. They took away the first TV with the dead pixel and set up the new one on the stand for me (until I wall mount it later). When I turned around for a minute to get something, they pulled the new TV out and laid it flat on top of the box (glass down) while they attached the stand from behind.

They had it horizontal for about 1-2 minutes and then stood it up and put it on the ground. This concerned me as did the fact that it was a bit cold outside today (40's) and the TV was cold. I tried to tell the guy I wasn't going to turn on the TV until it had warmed up and he seemed to understand me. However when I was moving the remotes about a few minutes later he turned it on. It wasn't attached to anything so no input signal came through, but I turned it off.

I left it off for about 5 hours before turning it back on to check for dead pixels and start D-Nice's slide routine on the USB.

I'm a bit paranoid after the first experience I suppose. Is it possible any permanent damage was done or should I sleep okay tonight? I'd really rather not return and replace it again with a 3rd set, especially since this one appears pixel free.

For the 65VT50 TV the TS525TU also needs the FHB5017 Vertical Offset Interface Bracket adapter, because of the extra-wide "wingspan" spacing of the mounting holes on the back of the TV.

It has an amazing 1.5" depth when fully collapsed, and also has a 25.5" maximum reach extended from the wall, with a 15 degree max tilt. For mounting convenience it also has a +/- 8" from center (i.e. 16" total bracket travel on a horizontal track), so that you can put the mount on the wall where the studs are and then slide the bracket 8" left or right from there to get the TV positioned where you want it.

The mount itself weighs about 50 lbs., and it can support up to 125 lb. of TV.

Looks like I'm going to be very happy with the outcome of using this mount.

i went with this mount:

http://www.kantoav.com/products/kmfmx2

Really easy to install and hang the TV on - very happy with it and cost a third for the mount I used on my 50" (and same weight) Sammy Plasma.

Tried formatting multiple times (both USB and SD cards), still no luck. Even updated firmware. Of all the possible problems, didn't expect this to be the hang up.

This 'beast' is light lmao - come to my place and lift my 50" Samsung PLasma weighs almost the same. I guess it's all relative. You won't be returning it - I'd talk more but gotta go watch more TV - Avatar in 3d - using an Oppo BD-103 fed directly to the VT50 was breathtaking. (THX Bright room).

Laying it down like this does not hurt anything, it is just more prone to damage, glass should remain upright as it is safer from damages. Powering the unit up while cold for 30 sec to 60 sec will also cause no harm. Letting it run from ice cold to warm will cause condensation on the inside of the unit and that is not good.

I believe they are all internal and not user-settable, although maybe through the service menu.

The goal is to reduce lag, so it's probably just things like changing algorithms...things like having scaling done with a faster but less accurate method. I don't use "Game" mode at all, but you can check to see if any of the user-configurable CPU-intensive processing settings (like noise reduction) are still available. If they are greyed out, then obviously that would be one of the changes.

Yup, I'd just say you would never want to transport one laying flat since the movements along the same plane as the pane of glass could crack it.

You'll have no problem sleeping.

Wow! Got some IMAX Blu-rays, watching Hubble right now and it looks amazing on my VT50! Also have Under The Sea, Deep Sea, and Grand Canyon to check out.

Cheers!

Are you using a Mac? It's my understanding that Macs put additional files on the drive when they format. Try finding a PC and format it as FAT32.

If you don't have access to a pc try importing then exporting using aperture or similar program.

This happened to me too. I went into the terminal and removed the extra osx hidden files. Use the commands:
"cd /volumes/untitled" to change directory to sd card. (Untitled = name of drive)
"ls -a" to see all of the files
"rm -rf filename" for each file/folder.

Then just yank the card out...
Good luck.

Thanks guys. I meant to come back and update this as I did figure out last night that the files were the side effects of using a Mac (the "._" files). Booted up the old Sony Vaio from 2003 (I knew I kept it around for a reason) and problem solved. Thanks again.

Hey guys, anybody have a recommendation on a good wall bracket for the 65VT50...BB salesperson sold me one that doesn't seem to work (Sanus Tilt for up to 70') trying to run in and exchange it for a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
