I recently purchased a 65 inch VT50 recently and had an appointment for calibration scheduled for Jan 15th by Jeff Meier.
Up until the calibration I had the tv on THX Cinema and I thought it looked great but once Jeff was done it looks amazing now.
Jeff was very patient with all my questions and his knowledge and enthusiasm is out of this world. He explained what he was doing while
doing the calibration. Where I really noticed the difference, and Jeff pointed this out, is in the skin tones. Out of the box in THX Cinema my tv
had a slight yellowish tinge to the skin tones but once Jeff tuned it in there was s noticeable difference as well as better color saturation and
shadow detail. I also highly recommend getting Jeff to do your sound system if you have one. It took awhile because Jeff had to correct some
things the auto calibration had wrong but once he was done I now have a much better sounding system with a more balanced and full sound
field.
If anyone is thinking about calibration make it worth your while and check out Jeff's tour dates and get scheduled, it is well worth it.
I talked to Panasonic concierges department and they set me up with an appointment 10 days from the day I called. They stated that they needed at least 5 days to get people to come up. There goes my plan of watching the super bowl on this TV. Funny how they advertised that most appointments set up in 2 days. Anyway I can speed the process up?
This is why I pay a bit more money. You got a good deal, and a dead TV. If you bought from a B&M , you'd be watching TV. I always say 'buyer beware'. My guess is you're buying refurbished stuff, that's why it's so 'cheap'. I don't mind paying a bit extra with a guarantee it will work, and in a few year that extra couple of hundred saved means nothing anyway. Just sayin -
Thank you Scirica for your reply. I'll try out the Samsung glasses. Not a bad price. My glasses aren't that big. By looking at the pictures of them, they look like they would work out well.
The crosstalk on the 3D is awful on the TV if it's not set to 48hz.
I want to switch from 60hz to 48hz in all of the 3D settings on my 55VT50, but I can only do it for my Roku. The option is greyed out with my cable box and Apple TV connected. All three devices are connected by HDMI cables.
I took delivery of the 65vt50 last night and have so far been absolutely blown away by the few minutes I played a blu-ray before switching over to slides for a while. But I noticed something very odd about it while running slides.
It looks like there's a speck of dust or dirt on the inside of the glass panel, creating a dark spot. At regular viewing distances it's really difficult to see unless it's a bright scene or slide or you're looking for it but it is about 14" in and smack dab in the center.
My main concern is that it might shift or move and potentially damage something inside. Should I exchange it and get another (and potentially risk other defects?) or just suck it up and keep it with the speck?

Why would that be and is there anything I can do?
The only time that option will be enabled is if your input source is 24p (Blu-Ray with 24p enabled).
Was your TV open box? If there is a problem with the fans that should be easy to fix. I'm assuming you don't have the TV closed in some kind of home theater furniture.
No it was a brand new unit and the TV is in the open.

I know, you are right. I screwed this up. I would never buy a refurbished model because I feel like it is not worth it in the long run. They assured me the TV was brand new but who knows! I should have just paid the couple of hundred extra bucks.

I would exchange it. The issue being you know it's there and you'll always know it's there and it will drive you nuts. If you get another set and something else is wrong, exchange it again....you're the consumer.

I felt the same way after installing Robnix's settings. HUGE improvement over THX Cinema/Brightroom.

Thanks for your calibration report. I've included a link to it in the flat panel (Post #2) lists that are linked in the signature area at the bottom of my post.
Returned my 55vt50 and got the 65vt50. 55" was just to small. PQ out of the box don't appear to be as good as 55vt50 but in sure that margin will close after break in. Has anyone calibrated their VT with panel brightness on high? If so, can you share your settings?
Keep it for now. If that's the only thing wrong with it you might want to keep it.

Thanks for all of the input! The dirt is a dark spot in the middle; it looks like a dead pixel and is driving me nuts! It's like the FedEx arrow. Now that I've seen it, it's the only thing I can see.
I've got messages left with my sales guy to hopefully get it exchanged. I hope I can get another because this thing is stunning.
I'm using Topper's setting he posted on the Amazon.com review on the VT 50. I have the 55VT50. They looks great, very nice. I did change the gamma to 2.2 and moved the panel brightness to "High", but I did still like the "mid" setting too. I was wondering if Topper made any new changes since to his settings?
Yea 2.2 and panel on high does look pretty good. I'm going to play with color management tomorrow to get it closer to my eyes liking. But still wish someone would calibrate it with panel brightness on high. My front room has 5 windows and I need that extra light output.
Hi everyone.... Over the weekend I got a 65" VT50 and so far liking it... I tried 3 Samsung 65ES8000 led tvs but the back lighting and white clouds I was seeing in each set was driving me crazy so I figured I try out this plasma.
So far I've seen that the colors can be tweaked to my liking but the TV just isn't looking very sharp... It's not blurry but I feel it can be better. There is the sharpness setting but I don't seeing it make much of a difference and many post they have it near 0.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I have DirectTv and have a PS3 for games and blue rays. The Samsung led I returned seemed to look more crisp.
Do I have a bad set? Need calibration?
Thanks!

I can't speak about Direct TV, but Time Warner Cable's picture is pretty compressed. It's not sharp. The sharpness setting is an artificial enhancer. You want that set to 0.
Agreed. I don't know why so many people love the THX modes. They don't look nearly as good as custom to me.
I agree 1000%!
I haven't done any tweaking yet, and have a calibration scheduled for mid-February. So the only thing I did was go through the available factory presets, and stopped when I got to CUSTOM. This looks great to me, while I get used to the set.

By nature of Panasonic (supposed to be of other plasmas, too), the picture is not that crisp when compared with LED. You will also find out that you can't set so that the VT give you the same or even close to that brightness level of LED.

I've gota say that after seeing so many posts about this plasma being "dim" and "can't compare to LED", I'm surprised at how bright my VT is (to me, of course)! I'm lucky to have it in a room with just 2 windows and neither directly in line with the VT, but I've more than once I've checked that I was, in fact, on THX Cinema setting cuz I felt it was so bright that maybe I had it on the wrong setting.
Just saying that people need to see this for themselves and decide; I for one am more than satisfied with this display's brightness.
