DLNA PQ better than local streamer??

Hey guys,
I'm perplexed. I have a panasonic vt30 plasma 55". I've always used some sort of media streamer to the tv via hdmi to stream mkv files. I have used boxes box, appletv, and roku. Recently I got interested in this DLNA stuff, and used a DLNA server from my iMac to my tv. The PQ on the Mkvs were like 2x better.. why is that???

Any advice for a good server for mac? I have yet to find one that works without choppy playback or other problems.

I've tried various schemes using my under-powered Mac Mini streaming to a Samsung BR. The one that works best for me unfortunately requires a virtual installation of Windows and Mezzmo, a Windows only streamer. I really like this streamer because menus displayed on your TV/BR can be customized. If you ask a question on their forum, you get a quick response from the software developers.

Wish they made a Mac version.

Content is just a 1080p MKV, the picture is sharper, more colorful/vivid. I have no idea why.. ??

Are both inputs using the same picture settings? Panasonic keeps the picture settings specific to each input so if you change HDMI inputs you will need to make sure you have the same pictures settings selected on the new input. Of course if your are going through an AVR into one HDMI input on the TV then disregard.

All 3 of those (Boxee/ATV/Roku) can't play native 1080P mkv files (I don't think Boxee can?). Your TV probably plays them natively w/o any transcoding - my Samsung does.

Boxee can play 1080P MKV native BD rips just fine.

ATV and Roku can't

DLNA and the Mac don't quite fit but you can try the latest Plex Media Server. It supports DLNA. There's a DLNA server from ElGato (the EyeTV people). Also Playback. The ElGato product has a trial, Plex is free. Won't XBMC also provide a DLNA server?
