How to enter service mode to see laser time

Does anyone know how to enter service mode on Panasonic DMR-EZ48 to see the amount of time on the laser?

Just got mine back from service and want to check they have not put an old one in.

I did see this on here one time but not sure what model

'CH UP, REC and OPEN /CLOSE gets into service mode'

Would it be written in the service manuals?

I really don't think the laser itself keeps track of how many hours are on it, I think that there is a timer in the system somewhere. If panasonic reset that timer, then it will show zero, no matter how many actual hours are on the laser assembly. If it was used, there is no way to know. The laser assemblies are very unlikely to be reused. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

They DO have the potential for early failure though. I bought my EH69 new from World-Import, and within a month the laser pickup failed. I sent it to Elgin, and they replaced the bad part for me for the (then) $130 flat fee. It has worked perfectly since. I think it is a very rare failure mode, but it can happen.
