I'm about to purchase my first card type TV tuner so I want to make sure I get the correct one.

1.w/ a dual TV tuner can I watch 2 shows simuletanouslly?

I would like to be able to get the primary show up and running on the desktop in a almost completey maxumized window

then have the secondary in a minimzed window is this possiable?

2.I am confussed why my Samsung TV won't recognize my HTPC as a device for picture in picture?

3.am I forced to have a DVR type device to have PIP?

using Win7, OTA antenna

Thanks STB

Yes and no. Let me explain.

The hardware can do it however not all software supports it. Meaning the software you choose to watch TV will determine if you will be able to do it. For example WMC (very popular TV watching software does not support it). However the software that comes with the hdhomerun allows it (you can run two instances of the video player and point them to the two separate tuners). So it all depends on what features you want and what software you use. A full featured DVR software does not support PIP while something simple like VLC or some other player that allows you to run two or more instances of the player will obviously allow you to do it.

currenlty the home run is'nt a option for me (I don't have a router) using wifi.

the plan was to use the HTPC as a DVR (recorder and playback device)
because there are a few channels that my current USB type tuner dos'nt pickup but my Magnavox 515 (it has a signal booster built in) recieves plus I have remote controll capabilitys w/ the TV.so on the rare ocasion when watching TV I'm actualley watching TV and not a recording usalley it's like 75% watching rstuff recorded and 25% or less actualle TV.

I still can use the 515 for PIP however it doe'nt have a return to previous channel so I have to think when I do a channel swap I'd prefer to preset channels and not have to think which channel to return to.

I was actualley thinking of minamizing my AV equipment (optimisticalley thinking the HTPC would be a do it all device) an get rid of the 515.

edit can I connect a old VCR w/ a analog to digital Zenith converter box using RCA cables to my new HDTV and use that as a 2nd tuner for PIP?if yes will decent RCA cable produce a nice picture and audio quaility?

Thanks STB

You actually don't need a router. Or a switch. If your PC or the HDHR doesn't support auto-cross over, a cross over network cable (has two pairs swapped) will allow network connectivity between the tuners and your computer. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) will allow you to share your wireless internet with the HDHR for what little it needs access to.

nice picture and audio quality is relative. And relative for most people on this site the answer is no. The best it will do is SD video and 2-channel stereo. So it would be about as good as your typical VHS video or NTSC OTA use to be.

The HomeRun (HDHR-3) is for over the air and clear QAM. The HomeRun Prime is their cablecard tuner.

It looks like your TV viewing level of quality matches your taste in music. They are both based in the 80s.

It's just not every day around here that someone is looking to integrate a VHS player into their system.

Here is the HDHR-3 for OTA tuning http://www.silicondust.com/products/models/hdhr3-us/

I replied in one of your other threads about your PIP issue. PIP is typically limited to the coaxial TV input which is OTA or ClearQAM from cable. The TV may allow you to do PIP between two different inputs. WMC will not do PIP.

My TV and stuff is here, a 65" 3D HDTV was the largest plasma that they had at the time.

Thanks Byran for all you'r helpfull advice I'll look into the Home run kindof pricie

probablily just get a out dated brand new IRless 1800 Haupage w/ HP IR blaster then reprogram the turd of a remote harmany 700 (I have one less device) and continue to use the USB Haupage tuner for effectively a dual tuner.
